How about when the alderman signs off on huge condo developments that just so happen to be financed by their largest campaign donor? Or when your tax money gets collected, sent to a different ward, and used to finance business development instead of your local school?

I don't know about any of that. Where do you hear about it?

One reason I was hesitant about doing the Cappleman fundraiser is that I know that he's pro-development and Schiller isn't. I found that out from my bandmate Megan, who's met Schiller through some of the social services she's worked at.

Dan hates the homeless.

Jenny, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Where do you hear about it?

Watch local news. Read newspapers.

Jenny, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I am not being sarcastic - that's actually where you find out about that stuff. It's not hidden.

Jenny, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I know. The 2008 presidential race is so much more interesting, though.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh I totally agree that businesses who don't shovel the sidewalks should be hung out to dry, especially the bars/cafes that put their stupid tables all over the place in the summer! But in residential areas, yeah, a little leeway is necessary. But it still amazes me that people will shovel only the 6 squares of pavement directly in front of their house, and neglect the end of the block where there might not be a house or something. I blame this all on my upbringing: shoveling was just something you did, because if you didn't things got fucked up pretty quickly.

John, I read about that stuff in the Reader, Trib online, etc.

I think we all know what the real problem is here: governtainment.

dan m, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Daily Show references killed thread dead

Really? It's just snow.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

ppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

n/a, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

It's just snow until it sits there for a week in subfreezing temperatures and turns into filthy treacherous ice that is really dangerous to walk on.

n/a, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

And people let their dogs shit in it and then when the snow finally melts there's ancient semifrozen dog shit everywhere.

n/a, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

This guy that sits across from me who I have to look at all day does this thing where (I think) he bites his hand just below his thumb hard enough that his head vibrates. He does this several times daily.

Wow. John's being EXTRA jaymc today. Reading over this thread was almost more than I could handle.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Or gets churned into wet sloppy slush that sucks to walk through.

The point is that it takes scant MINUTES to clear it away and save a lot of other people a lot of hassle.

dan m, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

How does that killfile work again?

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

snow on sidewalks makes it really easy for those in wheelchairs to get around or people who use walkers/canes/etc. that's one good thing about living across from a hospital, they are so afraid of someone falling on their sidewalks that they are clear almost before the snow can accumulate.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry. That was kind of nasty. I'm a little hung over and crabby today.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

That's a good point about the elderly/disabled.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess the thing is, I just don't expect government to do anything for me. There are definitely people it should do stuff for, but I don't consider myself one of them.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

kevin makes points. jenny gets exasperated and argues. jaymc doesn't get things. kenan opines. sarah tells work stories. jeff comes along occasionally and naysays. nick swings by and says something incisive/insightful and puts things in perspective.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

What? I do?

n/a, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you do.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Huh.

n/a, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm having some blackberries right now and I think I love them more than the baby Jesus.

Hey! I don't only tell work stories! I also talk about what I'm eating.

KitCat, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Blackberries are the shit!

dan m, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

blackberries are indeed the shit. lingonberries too.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I love blackberries, boysenberries, currants, gooseberries, strawberries, and raspberries.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

AND LINGONBERRIES. I'M SORRY LINGONBERRIES, I DIDN'T MEAN TO FORGET YOU.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I hate blackberries

Jeff, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I can take or leave berries.

Jordan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

jeff has no soul. or perhaps the soul of a serial killer or despotic genocidal madman or a children's birthday party clown.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

and jordan is his spawn.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I know two people that dislike berries. One of them is my coworker Laura. The other is Kr.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I forgot about Jesse: he tells stories about his day (i.e., blogs) and bitches. I did not mean to make ILX caricatures of you all.

Some of you like Dan and Amanda are hard to pin down.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Jeff was referring to the device, not the food. Or so I hope. Or he was just fulfilling my previous summary of him.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel and Kevin talk about smoking. Laurel talks about fashion. Amanda talks about boots, skirts and teaching.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I talk to myself.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess blue and straw are pretty great.

What do I do, Jesse? From my POV I talk about food and irrelevant topics that are more related to myself than to Chicago.

Jordan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

i would totally love to be able to light up at my desk. i don't really want to put on my jacket and shit just to stand in the cold to smoke. is there a TT going on tomorrow?

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

This is a good article about what aldermen do. (PS I know that "alderperson" is more PC, but I cling to "alderman" because of the awesome adjective "aldermanic.") (PPS This article might only be useful for people like me that blithely ignore city politics.)

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait. I forgot: Jenny takes on pop culture from a feminist perspective.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

She's a one-woman Bitch magazine, she is.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Nah, the best thing about smoke breaks is the change of pace.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeh, I guess you talk about fried foods and doods. Cuz you're hungry and gay. That's my role, actually.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know. I loved the job I had where I could smoke at my desk. That never stopped me from taking a smoke break.

Jesse, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't make TT tomorrow, as I have band practice. Our schedule has been pretty irregular lately, since there's basically eight people in the band now (former pianist/guitarist plus new pianist/guitarist), but I think we're doing Thursdays for the next two weeks and then going back to Wednesdays.

What's on the docket for the weekend, though? Kr will be in Mississippi from Thursday night through Saturday night.
