I have seen those, and pretty much just assume that it's a rotating privilege among security and TSA staff to "safely dispose" of the contents of the amnesty boxes.
Friday night! Let's see what bounty we have in the amnesty box!

A rather more daring, slightly more ACAB-minded person than myself might consider testing this hypothesis by putting some drug-like substances in there, but with decidedly unsavory ingredients.
Here you go, O'Hare cops! Enjoy this dime bag of oregano and rat poison!
Oh hey, what's this that I just discovered in my luggage? Could it be a half a cup of dried basil mixed with a tablespoon of fentanyl? I dunno. I guess you'd better check!
(Preemptively denouncing myself for even having these sinister thoughts; I'll show myself out.)

My understanding (gleaned through conversations with Phish heads, so maybe find secondary confirmation) is that the TSA don't realy care about weed anymore, although local police in the city you're flying into might, and carrying it over international borders is, of course, bad.

xp to peace, man: when I crave solid, actionable information about the state of American law enforcement and jurisprudence, I always look to my favorite jam-band forums.
I probably would have known nothing about the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 2016, were it not for my bros on the DMBfanz board. Those dudes totally helped me understand both the controversial fiscal policy of quantitative easing, AND the awesomeness of the bassline of "Ants Marching."
My DMB-adjacent homies have so far been quiet about the intricacies of cannabis enforcement in major US airports, but that's probably because Chad is taking a nap and the rest of the guys are out playing Ultimate in the quad.
And ums otm, I'm sure 85% of the time they don't want to have to parse the complexities of whether you're flying from a legal jurisdiction to an illegal one or vice versa.
