it is much worse to access and navigate than than anything else I attempt to use on mobile which is really saying something and getting the app would just feel like defeat

xp lol how is it any worse than x-ing out of a mailing list popup on a recipe website? this isn't like yelp where it literally forces the app to open if you want to do anything on mobile. it's just an overlay that you press one button to get out of.

CaaL, i have no idea what you're talking about with it asking you to login. i'm opening it in the chrome app in incognito so i'm not logged in, and it never once prompts me to. i click "continue" and that's it.

and if comments are closed after 6 months, that's not a reddit thing, that's another thing specific to certain subs (or threads). i've rarely seen that. for threads that get a lot of search engine attention, it's not uncommon to see people leaving thank you comments years after it was made.

bigger issue is that Reddit is just really bad for conversation, it's hard for any comment longer than a couple sentences to get more than a few upvotes, which means most people just won't see it, and even if someone replies, if you start replying to that you just wind up in a horrible nesting situation which quickly becomes utterly unreadable

I also hate recipe websites, but after all the faff there is usually a recipe at the end.

They're now openly threatening to take the privated subs away from the moderators:

look, it's asking me to log in with Google

I think that's actually a Chrome thing, I found a way to kill it for every website in Chrome's settings.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 15 June 2023 22:13 (one year ago) link

xp oh, i see. i guess i don't see that because i don't link my google account to chrome. i believe that's a chrome setting you can turn off.

bigger issue is that Reddit is just really bad for conversation, it's hard for any comment longer than a couple sentences to get more than a few upvotes, which means most people just won't see it, and even if someone replies, if you start replying to that you just wind up in a horrible nesting situation which quickly becomes utterly unreadable

i think this is another thing that's mostly true for r/all detritus which tends to be the worst of humanity and the worst of democracy. reddit isn't built for actual conversation at that scale. it's designed with a fundamental flaw that incentivizes posting quickly over all else. standard message boards where the posts all stay in one place will always be better.
I also hate recipe websites, but after all the faff there is usually a recipe at the end.

it may take a few searches but my hit rate on finding answers via reddit is a million times better than anything else available. i don't really know what you're looking for or how you're looking for it, but i don't really relate to this.

A two day blackout was never going to make them change their minds. Nothing short of permanently going dark was going to do that.

I was late to Reddit, only joined 4 years back bcs everyone'd abandoned FB and I hate twitter and wanted new grist.

TBH I have not experienced a jot of what the fuss is about. I dont use 3rd party OR the native app - I just browse Reddit in Chrome. Oh, the site determinedly tries to force me onto the app every time I refresh with a rude popup but I just doggedly dismiss it.

I've said it upthread but if you stick to yr own corners its a mostly pleasant experience. Gaming reddits are especially useful for detailled tips and charts and whatnot. My greatest disappointment is that /r/melbourne has decided to just close shop completely and move to Discord and I agree with ppl upthread - it is NOT a replacement, Discord is just a fucking roided up IRC client and I'm too old and busy to fuck with instachat. The whole point of forums is you can take your time to read and respond when you want.

I do miss Usenet, on that front.

the admin on one discord I’m a member of switched a few channels to a forum mode that’s kind of ok. good for persistent threads that don’t get lost in bot spam.

Multi-xposts: people complaining about the terrible mobile web experience were probably referring to this recent experiment in deliberately breaking functionality.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Friday, 16 June 2023 19:22 (one year ago) link

If you didn't encounter it, count yourself lucky. It was way more obnoxious than the single pop-up when the page initially loads; it popped up again any time you tried to upvote, respond, or post a comment, and the pop-up actively prevented you from doing any of those things on the mobile website no matter how many times you told it to fuck off.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Friday, 16 June 2023 19:25 (one year ago) link

*upvote, respond, post a comment, expand a comment thread, "show more replies," or do basically anything other than look at the OP and the top two or three responses.

i thought Reddit CEO Steve Huffman came off bad in his interview with The Verge

this new one with NBC News is disqualifying

Reddit's unpopular changes were inspired by Elon Musk's layoffs & cost-cutting (like not paying bills) at Twitter. insane. https://t.co/xE4aqxVkl1 pic.twitter.com/opBU6gD2Bk

considering reddit's role in building up the cult of musk there would be a symmetry to the platform getting totally muskified

which would presumably mean the return of explicit nazism among other things

Rough couple of weeks for these guys.

Reddit’s month may be going from bad to worse.

Hackers from the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV, are threatening to leak 80 gigabytes of confidential data from Reddit that they claim to have stolen during a February breach, according to a post from the group on the dark web, which was reviewed by CNN and an independent cybersecurity expert.

In their post, the hackers claim they first demanded a $4.5 million payout “for the deletion of the data and our silence” in April. After receiving no response, the group said it followed up on Friday with an additional demand: Reddit should withdraw a controversial new pricing policy that has sparked a protest from some of the platform’s most influential users.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 18:40 (one year ago) link

Some subs are now allowing NSFW posts in protest as Reddit has a policy of not allowing ads on NSFW subs. Check out /r/interestingasfuck as one of these.

Also to avoid the ugly desktop UI try old.reddit.com. As long as that's still around I'll still use Reddit at least on desktop. Reddit Enhancement Suite still works with it, fortunately.

Spez's recent comments are only going to embolden protests, trolling and backlash. I wouldn't be surprised if a clone successfully pops up by the end of the year and Reddit experiences the very kind of exodus that helped buoy their success back in 2005.

This chart from SubredditStats show the daily comments and posts for 5 major subreddits: r/news, r/facepalm, r/mademesmile, r/oddlysatisfying, r/mildlyinfuriating.

And that’s how we've now ended up with a Reddit full of r/MadeMeSmile. And, just in case you're curious about what that looks like — four of the top five Reddit posts were reposted TikToks.

Reddit reportedly signed a multi-million content licensing deal with an AI company
https://www.engadget.com/reddit-reportedly-signed-a-multi-million-content-licensing-deal-with-an-ai-company-124516009.html?guccounter=1

As the moderator of my town's subreddit, I suppose I should have some sort of doomed-to-fail opinion about data privacy. If it wasn't opvious already, only "AI" buzzword compliant b.s. is getting funding - all of it spent to monetize the shit out of everyone and everything.

A post not about content, but on navigation.

When, on a desktop computer, I'm navigating a long thread with loads of deep subthreads, there is a depth level and/or subthread post count where clicking on the "more replies" bit opens a new page instead of expanding the subthread in the same page. My question is: is there a way of getting back to the same place in the main thread where I was when I was sent to the next page? The "See full discussion" link takes me back to the top of the main thread, the "Single comment thread" appears to just take me up one level, which may be somewhat more useful but is a bit disorienting.

It feels I'm missing something completely obvious here, but this one throws me all the time.

anatol_merklich, Friday, 18 October 2024 10:13 (three weeks ago) link

You could just make a habit of right clicking “more replies” and opening the link in a new tab instead of just clicking through and you’ll never lose your place on the main tab.

Evan, Friday, 18 October 2024 10:29 (three weeks ago) link

Well yeah, I did think of that, but the first links I tried didn't have any "Open in new tab" options in their context menu. Now I see, however, that those were of the expand-on-this-page type, and that the ones that actually do open a new page have the link-type context menu.

A bit annoying to have to check for the option for each one (or bother to learn at which level this happens), but I'll take it. Thanks!

anatol_merklich, Friday, 18 October 2024 10:41 (three weeks ago) link

I wonder if shift + clicking would open same page ones normally and new page ones in a tab?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 18 October 2024 11:40 (three weeks ago) link

So it does! (Well, ctrl + click in Chrome; shift + click opens an entire new window.) Excellent idea, thanks!

anatol_merklich, Friday, 18 October 2024 23:10 (three weeks ago) link

isn't that the same idea I mentioned? geez!

Evan, Friday, 18 October 2024 23:29 (three weeks ago) link

reddit bombs out with errors for me almost constantly and fails to load things, but I think it's because I run EFF's privacy badger and 2 ad blocker extensions. It's quite annoying

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Friday, 18 October 2024 23:32 (three weeks ago) link

@Evan my suggestion, doesn’t rely on trying to write click and being disappointed when you can’t. Geez!
