how shitty would this show be if we had like... seen his fuck buddy's childhood

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Friday, 25 September 2009 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

pretty much every character in this show changes in some significant way and reveals more of themselves than you see at first... tracer hand what are you talking about

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Friday, 25 September 2009 21:48 (fourteen years ago) link

even his disapproving sister-in-law is given way more depth and way more to do than most comedies would allow that kind of character

s1ocki i'm not talking about some cliche hack move to show "depth" i would just like to have stayed with gina gershon and the beguiling class friction that was developing between the powers bros and her instead of racing off to a "pitch off" (nb. a term i have never heard but wouldn't that be a battle between pitchers?). likewise i would have liked to see fuckbuddy put kenny in his place once or twice, or least be allowed to be funny. likewise has it not occurred to anyone in the writing team that stalking your large betitted high school sweetheart is about 1% sweet and about 99% lame as all hell? oh i know i know - our hero is the man child and his myopic whims must be nurtured as a virgin lily. whatever. i wonder if will ferrell's got a script lined up about an aging comic whose schtick has gotten so tired after repeating himself too often that he starts pitching tv series which are just padded season-long versions of his movies but they don't get renewed... and then... he comes back... to prove to himself if to no one else... that he still has what it takes...

Tracer Hand, Friday, 25 September 2009 23:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i would agree that basically every character besides kenny & the schoolteacher is underwritten and not terribly funny

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

if no one said that then i would agree with my own brain

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

oh i did like the principal actually, there was something extra about him. something weird. he never gets offended by anything but sometimes he lays down the law in a way that even kenny respects.

xpost haha

"large betitted"!

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

the fuckbuddy character has plenty of funny moments - you really wanted to see her stand up to kenny and tell him what's what?!

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

likewise has it not occurred to anyone in the writing team that stalking your large betitted high school sweetheart is about 1% sweet and about 99% lame as all hell?

it's... supposed to be... pretty lame.

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

there were a few things about the show that didn't sit real well with me.

like, i don't mind if the characters have some backwards ideas about sexual relations - they weren't supposed to be enlightened individuals in any way, but the way the camera lingered on her melons throughout the show - even when he first started trying to get her back and was kind of creepy and aggressive about it - convinced me that the writers were just as complicate as the characters, and that I as a viewer was supposed to be, too. no reason was ever really given for why he liked her except that he lusted for her body, so it rang kind of false when he suddenly cared so much for her toward the end. kind of undermined that whole aspect of the show.

possible spoilers follow...
...
..
.
the other thing that bugged me, and i am probably totally over-analyzing it, was that the only non-white character to get any kind of significant screen time was the black baseball player, played by the always awesome Craig Robinson, who ends up an antagonist who gets sonned in the worst kind of way. What a waste of a funny actor, too. When they first introduced him, I was really hoping he would end up one of Powers' fuck-up friends.

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:43 (fourteen years ago) link

that would be 'complicit', sorry.

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i liked the show a lot, i just thought those things could have been done better. those things and Ferrell, who will hopefully be too busy working on a new shitty movie to chew up any more scenery in the next season.

sorry dudes but melissa already did this schtick about 1,000 times more annoyingly on the mad men thread, you're always going to be a b- at best so you might as well give it up

I thought the fuck buddy was pretty hysterical nad wished there was more of her tbh.

the scene where powers first notices his old flame and the camera zooms in not on her face but her tits is comedy genius you rubes

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:06 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah they make sure you know kenny's a bonehead but i don't see any signals that his thing for her is supposed to be lame. or that she's supposed to be lame which she pretty much is. i mean the show's 100% invested in kenny's thing for this DRIP.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:10 (fourteen years ago) link

signals like sad trombone sound effects kinda thing?

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:14 (fourteen years ago) link

well i don't know - how did YOU figure out that "it's... supposed to be... pretty lame"?

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:17 (fourteen years ago) link

cos all the ppl are lame?

this show is basically just danny mcbride saying funny stuff

cozwn, Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't even know how to begin to answer that xp

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i honestly don't think i even understand your criticism. you want the show to not only portray sad sack characters but also somehow underline how lame they are?

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm just sick of every wedding crashers/whatever modern bromatic comedy plot where the hero's unquenchable love for the already-taken lady is some inviolate truth in the middle of everything regardless of how certifiably lame the girl in question is. it would be instantly five thousand percent better to have april at least be sort of a ditz. or have a personality at all actually!

it would also be five thousand percent better if she had awesome, fridge-rattling sex with the principal.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 26 September 2009 00:23 (fourteen years ago) link

fridge rattling sex

Jody Hill really is not shit without the incredible Danny McBride, I don't know why the assertion that this show is kind of halfassed on paper should provoke "uh the name of the show is Mad Men not Black in America pt. 2 with Soledad O'Brien" criticisms

A B C, Saturday, 26 September 2009 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I bet if I scroll upthread I will see a post I made which makes this exact same point but I do love this show and I want McBride and Robinson to do a buddy movie together. Maybe as an incentive for saying "no thank you" to meth for Robinson like a watchable version of Clerks 2

cutty, Saturday, 26 September 2009 09:17 (fourteen years ago) link

calvin the show seems to be totally unaware that the romantic lead is a drip and that kenny's fixtion with her is lame, i.e. it sends no "signals" to this effect. therefore i did not figure it out. because the show depends on us taking kenny and april seriously as a possible item. like for instance, when kenny's in the bar talking to someone off-camera that it's time to take it to the next level and settle down the big punchline is that he's talking to the skank ho. haha wooo. my contention - and i fully realize this is "imagine the show i wish existed rather than the show as it is" territory - is that the show would have been 5000 times better if it turned out he was actually talking to april. she either says "kenny what in the fuck are you talkin about" or she says "i'm sorry were you talkin?" although like i said the show depends on us taking it seriously so we can't do that. i think it gets in the way of the interesting stuff - i.e. the stuff with gina gershon, i.e. the stuff at school (do we ever actually see kenny relating to any kids? doing his actual job? i'd a million times rather see that than another insipid romantic comedy rerun).

also relax dudes i wouldn't be talking about the show this much if it wasn't interesting in a few big ways.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 26 September 2009 12:13 (fourteen years ago) link

mainly, the way in which it stars danny mcbride.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 26 September 2009 12:15 (fourteen years ago) link

you seem to want kenny to make the right choices in life. he will never do that.
