birkenstocks vs. doc martens

only one of these brands adds noticeably to my height

i've had a few pairs of each in my life but i am voting birkenstocks. i just bought a pair of dundees in mocha and they are rad:

feel like both these brands were very 90s but are enjoying a resurgence now

I'm only familiar with their iconic shoes. Although birks were deeply unstylish, they were much more comfortable than the docs I've worn. This is an apples to oranges thing obviously, but I've worn other brands of sandals and combat boots.

I love the look of birks but I have never found a pair that are comfortable for me.

if you're a dude under 5'9" and you're picking Birkenstocks, I feel like your entire life must be made up of a series of escalating incorrect decisions

conversely, if you are over 6'3" and picking Dr. Martens, I might be interested in adopting you as my chosen lord and savior

i'm 5'7" and i have learned to embrace and be comfortable w/ my height!

also i kind of think docs are a little dorky

also i already know ilx is going to vote docs because people here like punk subcultures a lot more than hippie subcultures

we have photographic evidence of a 20-something Mr Veg rocking a Judas Priest shirt + birkenstock sandals. a man of endless contradictions

I think my preferences and predilections are already documented. 10-hole, 14-hole, 16-hole, 20-hole, basically I will not be happy until my entire body just laces up to my neck with BOOT.

Both are enjoying a comeback - it's true. I am weirded out by seeing all these baby 20 year olds walking around dressed like I did in HS. Fashiony blogger type ladies are into birks now and I just can't really get behind that no matter how comfortable they might be. The clog style as actual slippers might be the one exception. Docs for ever despite the fact that I haven't owned any in years. I think I'm gonna have to get some come fall.

I miss being able to wear Docs - I can't get the made in the UK ones in my size.

IME it's better to try buying Docs in the late spring because everyone is focused on making room for sandals and they'll put the heavy winter shoes on sale

I wore birks when I was a kid, like lived in 'em all summer, but docs are so second-nature to me that when I put em on it's like...yup...this is what it feels like to wear shoes for me

lol @ doc marten sandals, think i had a pair though before getting birkenstock milanos in high school.

one of these pairs is ugly and clunky as fuck and the other is classy and simple, can you guess?

that's what I was talking about when I said the clog type ones

i did like my doc sandals, i got them after a period of wearing some cheap nike leather/rubber flip-flops down to the pavement and for the sake of my feet i wanted a sandal that was as much like a shoe as possible. that they were.

also good for boosting your masculinity, wearing in less foot-safe areas, etc

I have never worn Docs, Birks, or sandals

i also kind of dig how birkenstock names each shoe style after a city

i mean they are already lonely planet hamburg enough

I have owned numerous pairs of those in my life and they are pretty great.

cool! i am excited. the dundees i mentioned upthread are pretty much my everyday shoe and i love them, it will be nice to have the bostons for around the house and more casual wearing. i could probably even wear them to work during the summer

the only bummer about birkenstocks for me is that they wear out pretty fast -- i just had to get my dundees resoled after about 10 months of wearing them. tbf though i walk a lot

i love the way they look but i have never had a comfortable pair, they always make my arches ache no matter how long i wear them
