I really loved that Vivian Maier doc, but found the guy who "found" her a real irritating prick.

xelab, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

I agree with that--I was happy that he wasn't around much after the first 20 minutes (or at least not in front of the camera as much).

clemenza, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

Her photography is so awesome and it is an incredible story, but that guy...But in the end her unstoppable talent wins out.

Keep an eye out for two iconoclastic docs, Fifi Howls from Happiness and What Now? Remind Me.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

I like the look of The Rover, Ilo Ilo and Policeman but Dom Hemingway looks like it is deservedly unloved. Only seen the trailer like, but it looked like standard faux cockney-thug type drivel.

the "much buzz" in the Nolan film is bad soundmix

Was gonna say, the buzz seemed to die down on that one once people started seeing it.

Lots of 2014 films still to see, but

Under the Skin
Blue Ruin

I really enjoyed that John Wick and more recently The Drop, I was thinking there might be a forthcoming Hardy-naissance until I looked at his upcoming projects which include a Mad Max reboot and some Tom Clancy shite.

xelab, Thursday, 1 January 2015 20:00 (nine years ago) link

I also liked John Wick and The Drop, and enjoyed The Equalizer until the interminable final scene in the warehouse.

Wow so everybody really liked Under The Skin, huh? the OST was one of my fave releases but couldn't stand the film

Me: Force Majeure, Birdman, A Touch Of Sin

fgti, Friday, 2 January 2015 21:56 (nine years ago) link

"really liked" is an understatement.

Eric H., Friday, 2 January 2015 22:03 (nine years ago) link

so is "really indifferent"

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 January 2015 22:11 (nine years ago) link

Just watched that Force Majeure earlier, thought it was brilliant, always get the bearded guy who plays Mats mixed up with Rafe Spall. I think earlier in this year I voted A Touch Of Sin, The Immigrant and Under The Skin and have not seen anything new to usurp any of these yet.

xelab, Friday, 2 January 2015 22:15 (nine years ago) link

Yep, my three from this post are still basically the winners:

Stranger by the Lake
Under the Skin
Manakamana
― It's Autumn Sunrise (Eric H.), Tuesday, August 26, 2014 9:26 PM

Swap in Stray Dogs for Manakamana, maybe.

Eric H., Friday, 2 January 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

I saw Locke last night. Not one of my favorite films of the year, but maybe my favorite line of the year: "She's not exactly an oil painting."

Nhex, Friday, 2 January 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

yeah that's how I feel about Tom Hardy.

I've watched Breadcrumb Trail 3x for what it's worth.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 3 January 2015 08:23 (nine years ago) link

Different than what I posted in July, and probably final--still haven't seen Inherent Vice.

Boyhood
Particle Fever
Citizenfour

So far, between my ears it's yet another year without a great film.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:28 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, for me as well. Nothing like Stray Dogs or Closed Curtain, both of whom I consider 2013. Perhaps Goodbye to Language or From What is Before or Lil Quinquin, which I'll hopefully see in 2015.

Frederik B, Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:31 (nine years ago) link

Stray Dogs was an outright disappointment to me, Closed Curtain a good variation on the preceding, better Panahi work.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:50 (nine years ago) link

Without seeing Stray Dogs or esp (as it seems to have been screened in London) Goodbye to Language I am not sure I can vote on any ILX best films of '14 poll :-(

All of my faves weren't as good as seeing catching some of the oldies for the first time by Akerman, Ozu and Hou. xp

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:52 (nine years ago) link

btw a friend just posted on FB that The Imitation Game is the summit of filmmaking for him. Should I or shouldn't I?

xyzzzz, just think of all the people who saw 8 films and are going to vote for Boyhood anyway. cuz IT'S JUST MOVIES!

Another 2013 release that wasn't matched by anything from 2014: How to Be a God. Still don't know what on earth I think about that one, but it was definitely special...

Frederik B, Saturday, 3 January 2015 15:13 (nine years ago) link

Eric H., Saturday, 3 January 2015 15:16 (nine years ago) link

I love your dating of films Frederik B - Hard to be God has just made it through the film festivals. Should be in screens in '15.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 15:20 (nine years ago) link

yeah, stop seeing everything first, you European, you!

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 3 January 2015 15:26 (nine years ago) link

we don't like that round 'ere I tells ya!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:03 (nine years ago) link

I just go by world premiere. And we hardly get to see everything first, just a lot of European/Asian fare. So stuff like Hard to be a God or Closed Curtain, but on the other hand we have to wait for stuff like Imitation Game and Unbroken, so it's about equal.

And more annoyingly, hardly anything ever gets actual premieres here. Hard to be a God just showed a single time back in april, on a friday afternoon, at the festival. Packed audience, though. Fun experience. Later that evening I saw Stranger by the Lake, then went drinking, then next morning saw Norte, pretty hungover. Good times.

Frederik B, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:09 (nine years ago) link

Frederik the Danish tourist board should just give you a job (if you don't already work there). It does all sound v good!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Stranger by the Lake would be my Great movie of this year--since many critics are counting it as a '14 film, I will as well. Liked Boyhood a lot without being over the moon about it, but compared to the looks of this year's Oscar-bait, I sure won't begrudge it any awards. Would be completely in favour of a Supporting Actor win for Hawke, in fact.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Saturday, 3 January 2015 18:00 (nine years ago) link

So stuff like Hard to be a God or Closed Curtain, but on the other hand we have to wait for stuff like Imitation Game and Unbroken, so it's about equal.
