Martin Short: Classic or dud

just found this site by accident. it seems nothing has yet been written about Martin Short here. why? i think he's classic - one of the most fabulously funny entertainers ever. hello by the way, my name's Denise and I live in the potters.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

hello denise. you'll fit in here. martin short is dud, though.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

who?

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

He is a creepy man. I remember seeing some witless romcom on TV called Jack of Hearts or something with him in. It had one v.unexpected topless scene like they just wanted to get a 15 certificate to make it cooler. It wasn't Martin Short who was topless, but he was in it.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think perhaps i won't fit in here. I think, on reflection, that I'm possibly the antithesis of I Love Everything. sometimes I even think I only truly love my mum and dad, my horse, Mrs. Martinet (my classical guitar tutor) and Martin Short. (I'm not saying I hate that much either, but..) love is a very strong word.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 12:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, i'm only here because there's no "everything hates me" board.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 12:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

please can you stop discussing things on this thread now. i will go and i don't expect to see any more answers when i return. i mean it. the subject was Martin Short. he deserves better.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

i got told off.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ooooh nast-ee, we should all write something thats totally not about Martin whatever-his-name-is now - just to be mean

Plinky (Plinky), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

and get told off like that again?! no chance, i can't take that kind of verbal onslaught twice in a day.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

luckily you caught me. i have fixed methods that's all. and they obviuosly don't tally with how things are done around here. you seem a gentle person, g-kit. and i don't know you Plinky, but you seem quite the dapper one. you both have the potential to be a leader, like Martin Short. but, some of your fellow contrubutors are filthy.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm gentle as a kitten. i got no idea what's going on in this thread now.

who is Martin Short, anyway? and why doesn't he go topless?

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm one of the filthy contributors, sorry.

Martin Short can be pretty hilarious, although I want to shake him for creating Jiminy Glick.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

He was fifth in my "Top 5 Mediocre Comic Actors of the Mid-To-Late 80s". Steve Guttenberg came top, obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

that is disgusting! really. g-tik -- you don't need to stoop to the web cam antics of Andrew from australia. i've just read his thread, where he is taking photos of trivial things and the suggestion is always there that rude things could be next. Martin Short is clean.

Dan Perry -- you're so right. you seem nice. Though Jiminy Glick rocks! it's all i think about when i'm mucking out the stables.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

hey! i greeted you, are you calling me filthy?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh, you meant N.'s creepy topless stuff? yeah, that's pretty filthy.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

damn, did i get told off again?

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you stopped talking about topless MArtin Short, you probably wouldn't get told off, G-Kitty.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Michael -- you're not filthy, but you said dud and you have admitted in the past to going clubbing evry night. that needs sorting out. then you could be a leader, like Martin Short.

g-kit -- it's not unreasonable of me. as i think you'd find, if you thought about it for a second.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

i don't think it's unreasonable, i just wasn't sure. i confuse easily.

i know who Steve Guttenberg is, but not Martin Short. and i've seen Steve with his shirt off.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

jesus, have you googled me? :-0

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

anyway, i'm leaving now. you've had your chances. Ned Raggett seems nice. you could learn a lot from that upstanding man.

it's fine g-kit. i know you're sorry. just rent out those Martin Short movies, you here? clickety click.

Plunging Hen, Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just googled Martin Short and he's that annoying man that talks about 'Cak' a lot in that horrible film Father of the Bride 2. He is so totally, incredibly, completely dud!!!

Plinky (Plinky), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

i feel so empty. anyone name some Martin Short movies for me?

i never seen FotB2.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

less of the Jesus, Michael.

God googles everyone.

...and then she was gone and the name martin short was never spoken of again except in hushed tones around the campfire by old-timers who remembered those dark days in october 2002.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 14:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

i still can't get over her calling me g-tik. that would just be silly.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 14:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

His skits on the Biography channel are horrid.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 10 October 2002 14:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic: most SCTV stuff (Ed Grimley and Jackie Rogers Jr. esp.). The short film from SNL with Harry Shearer about the first male synchronized swim duo. Pretty much destroyed that "sport". His appearances on the Letterman show are pretty funny.
Dud: Most of his movies, though my wife does like the Franck character from the Father of the Bride movies. Don't ask me why. Jiminy Glick is pointless.
I think a good many of you folks need more fibre in your diets.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 10 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

two years pass...
I must be the only one who likes Jiminy Glick. Oh sure, it's uneven, but when it hits, good lord does it hit.
I'm looking forward to the movie even though I'm sure it will be a "bad movie".

I'm looking forward to it, too, Huck!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago) link

An old co-worker used to quote Martin Short all the time, but really obscure SCTV skits, so I didn't even realize it was all stolen from Short until months later. They were frequently hiliarious, tho.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic for The Queen Haters alone (on SCTV)!

Wow, this thread started in a really strange manner.

Anyway, I just fell down the Martin Short rabbit hole on youtube and found this one I'd never seen before.

A shame:

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2010/aug/23/martin-shorts-wife-dies/

Martin Short's wife, Nancy Dolman, has died. She was 58.

Short's manager, Marc Gurvitz, said Monday that Short's wife of 30 years had died but provided no cause of death or any additional details. Short, best known for his comedic roles on "Saturday Night Live" and in the "Father of the Bride" franchise, married Dolman in 1980 after the pair met while working together in a production of "Godspell."

They have three children: Katherine, 27, Oliver, 24, and Henry, 20.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2014 11:54 (nine years ago) link

this happened in 2010 btw. from vanity fair:

Short flatly described his wife’s death as “awful” and admitted that in the two years since her passing he has spent an inordinate amount of time on the road, taking sundry TV jobs and touring a one-man show—variously entitled Sunny von Bülow Unplugged, A Party with Marty, and If I’d Saved, I Wouldn’t Be Here—because “when you’re putting on your suit in Boston, Nancy wouldn’t have been there. So life is normal. It’s here that it’s not as normal.”

His book came out last week. Anyone read it yet?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

No.

He's been getting great reviews for his smallish part in Inherent Vice btw.

A friend and I used to quote Irving Cohen incessantly

This is the character directly based on Irving Caesar, right? "A bouncy C!"

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 17:37 (nine years ago) link

he was entertaining (as usual) on letterman.

he is one of those guys that nobody has anything bad to say about IIRC.

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 17:44 (nine years ago) link

If it turns out anyone hates Martin Short, I'll be very saddened.

He's great on Mulaney. He's also the only tolerable thing on Mulaney. But it's worth watching just for him.
