What one piece of advice would you give your thirty year old self?

pay down your credit card bill. (still wrestling with this in my late thirties: low monthly minimums and the temptation of available credit means capital one will have me by the nuts for years to come.)

Rihannamator (get bent), Saturday, 30 August 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

in fact, close that credit card asap. don't spend what you don't have, and find alternate ways to keep your FICO score high.

Rihannamator (get bent), Saturday, 30 August 2014 19:52 (nine years ago) link

September 2001 is a bad time to decide to go and visit your family in New York. Trust me on this one.

Also, don't move in with the DJ/promoter guy. Dump him as soon as he starts pulling the weird gaslighting bullshit; it will only get worse.

Move out of Mississippi and never, ever, ever go back except for funerals.

Malibu Stasi (WilliamC), Saturday, 30 August 2014 20:07 (nine years ago) link

Don't move into the house in Stoneybatter. It's not worth the effort and will cause more stress than you want.
You deserve better than this.

Check out Galway.

Learn to sew, check out courses.
At the time I seemed to be in freefall. A lot of things falling apart and some really bad choices made.
In fact if i could go back to the choice of moving into the place before that last private rental in Dublin I'd say avoid like the plague.
But the next year (my 31st) saw a lot of change which could have been a lot less painful. Some f it turned out to be reasonably positive.

But outside of that, the advice that I wish I'd been able to give myself a lot earlier would involve getting hold of a sewing machine and the set up to use it much earlier than i did. & learning how to make clothing. Would just love to have started a lot earlier.

Somewhen around then it would have been really good to ensure that the lps I lost around that time didn't get lost as well as all the recordings of my radio show.

Stevolende, Saturday, 30 August 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

Or maybe learn to do something about the stress. Find a decent place to live.
Get into doing something that is in some way productive.
Be aware of the existence of things like Fás and college courses.

Learn to tidy the place you're living in is something I could really do with having learnt much earlier too. Still need to work out how to properly organise.

Learn to cook properly. & if you're looking for a flat make sure it does have proper coooking and washing up facilities. & secure windows etc.

You know deep down it's a bad idea to work for a bunch of hand-wringers who are on the one hand obsessed with creativity and innovation and on the other hand clueless as to how to innovate anything, and you don't really want to leave the UK in order to work for them, so just don't.

OK, so you took the job. Despite hating all your co-workers, socialize with some of them, because it's going to be a lonely couple of years otherwise.

Dress better. (Still have not quite cracked this one tbh)

You already know you want to dig into developmental psychology, so start now and don't keep dropping it for 3 years at a time.

Don't get into super-low-carb eating. You will become obsessed with sugar and it will have 0 impact on your body other than a bit of yo-yo-ing.

ljubljana, Saturday, 30 August 2014 21:00 (nine years ago) link

Fás was an Irish welfare education program that has been replaced over the last year.
I would have qualified for it at the time and it might have lead somewhere useful, though it doesn't really seem to have since. but if I'd got qualifications for things then it might have been more useful.

One thing that did happen within about 3 years of then is taht I got into University which probably wouldn't have happened if I had been aware of courses before I left Dublin.

I don't think it's possible to have a good time, all the time.

My advice to myself would be:

Have the nerve to keep going and play your role, despite the imposter syndrome, the paralysis of fear and uncertainty, and the inevitable fuck ups. Life is surprising - some of the things you think you'll enjoy, you end up hating, and some disasters turn out to be positive overall. Experience it in all its variety - and don't get too obsessed on any one event and try not to end up embittered.

I used to think about what advice I'd give my younger self. I don't think I have any advice for that person anymore. I don't know what I could tell them that they would listen to and take in the way that I would intend it. I think probably I would show up and listen and say "That sounds hard" at appropriate junctures and my younger self would probably start off by yelling at me and at some point they would cry or almost-cry and I'd probably give them a hug. If I said anything at all it would be perhaps "You are a good person, you are stronger than you think you are right now, and you deserve better than this."

I don't know if that would make a difference either but it's my fantasy, right?
