Beans are fabulous, of this there is no doubt, but which are your favourite?

There are more than 40,000 types so I shan't list them all.

God damn it how did I typo the thread title.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 15 September 2014 11:34 (nine years ago) link

broad beans = fava beans iirc

i eat a ridic amount of most of these though i mostly hate peas, butter beans have freaked me out since childhood, and chickpeas are horrible apart from in falafels

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 15 September 2014 11:37 (nine years ago) link

quite a big fan of flageolets, but beans are great any road.

I hate peas unless they're mushy. Love chickpeas. Just had kidney beans in my chilli cheese fries for lunch.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 15 September 2014 11:44 (nine years ago) link

I use a lot of borlotti beans; chuck them in all sorts. Pad out a lasagne meat sauce, or a risotto.

i've got a puy lentil salad + pitta bread for my lunch

not mad keen on runner beans either, much prefer green beans/string beans. this might be the chunky chip vs skinny fries debate of the legume world

how can people not like peas for pete's sake?

monoprix à dimanche (dog latin), Monday, 15 September 2014 11:57 (nine years ago) link

i hate sweetcorn mind you.

monoprix à dimanche (dog latin), Monday, 15 September 2014 11:58 (nine years ago) link

chickpeas are very good. they're excellent in curries and salads, especially if you're vegetarian or 'going' vegetarian cos they really fill you up.

monoprix à dimanche (dog latin), Monday, 15 September 2014 11:58 (nine years ago) link

voted soy on account of soymilk, tofu and tempeh. but black beans and esp pintos are delish

Tom Waits for no one (outdoor_miner), Monday, 15 September 2014 12:51 (nine years ago) link

sometimes I think I would be happy to eat nothing but chickpeas forever

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 15 September 2014 12:53 (nine years ago) link

fixed your title for you. How this thread doesn't include black or pinto beans is extremely troubling, but I can't edit poll options.

I've been really into purple beans lately (they are the most amazing purple when they grow on the vine but unfortunately turn green when you cook them.)

Growing beans has given me a whole new appreciation for them. Have grown broad beans (who knew they grew like that! so bizarre, like pod people! WTF!) and runner beans and French beans and borlotti beans and chick peas. I had a friend come round and visit me this morning and I spent like the first ten minutes just showing her all these different kinds of beans I had in my fridge that I'd grown.

Still probably love soy beans and adzuki beans the best, though.

Also disappointed by criminal lack of black beans.

I was going to post a .jpg as an answer, but it's really hard to find a picture of refritos that does justice to how awesome they actually are.

No pinto beans? :(

Every bean is sacred. Every bean is great. But, one cannot make hummus without chickpeas, therefore chickpeas walk off with it.

Aimless, Monday, 15 September 2014 16:35 (nine years ago) link

oh my god well-made houmous is sublime

marcos, Monday, 15 September 2014 16:45 (nine years ago) link

i have an israeli friend who wisely distinguishes real houmous from hippie houmous. this post gets at the difference between smooth, delicious houmous and chunky, dry hippie houmous: http://desertcandy.blogspot.com/2007/07/hummus-dilettante.html

Are beans supposed to be this colour?

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ByPYx_fIUAI_r4Q.jpg

I mean they tasted really good (and, oddly, they cooked to a purple colour. Not unlike the purple beans we grew, which cook to... ordinary green. Go figure.)

I am so confused by all these colour changing beans.
