Oh god, Canadian Thanksgiving, help.

If you lot start going on about Canadian Christmas next, I'm out of here!

I am celebrating Thanksgiving here at work, the same place I spent Canada Day. We do get All Saints Day off, though. These crazy foreign holidays are messing with me.

for the last like 5-6 years whatever plan we make gets fucked for reasons beyond our control and nobody gets what they want. This year we were supposed to go down to San Diego and have Thanksgiving with our in-laws - which (apart from the epic driving/travel required) would have been fine, except one of my in-laws dad suddenly took a turn for the worse and has now been given only a few days to live, meaning Thanksgiving at their house is canceled. No one else in either my or my wife's families is hosting anything we can go to. It's too late to host it at my house, and besides at this point we would have no one to invite, and I really really really hate being in the position of looking around for a party to get invited to, what with two young children etc. I would say we would just go out to dinner that day but every single fucking place that isn't some fancy restaurant hosting a ridiculous overpriced "Thanksgiving feast" is going to be closed that day - absolutely nothing that will entertain my children is going to be open that day (museums, theme parks, etc.) and it's going to be freezing and raining outside, so I can't even take them outside to the forest or something similar. This is after like a decade of my wife refusing to host it at our house (I got her to relent last year), but not having any reasonable alternatives since no one in my family hosts a Thanksgiving Dinner, and all my wife has is a crazy mom who lives in Florida and doesn't want to host anything either (or come to visit us for that matter). Her aunt/uncle in San Diego were the closest thing and now that's fucked. I just spent half an hour calling around to see if anywhere was going to be open on Thursday and got nothing. What am I supposed to do, but a turkey that just the four of us would probably take three weeks to finish eating? I am all into being thankful, but I hate this fucking holiday.

Maybe just do a nice big non-thanksgiving feast at home for the immediate fam? Just yous and the kids? Family fun in the kitchen?

brimstead, Monday, 23 November 2015 22:31 (eight years ago) link

Yous = you and wife, obv. I didn't want to use the term " immediate family" because I'm dumb and don't know if that implies grandparents

brimstead, Monday, 23 November 2015 22:32 (eight years ago) link

yeah idk I think that's pretty much the option. unless we want to go to bucca di beppo or yank sing.

grandparents not in the picture at this particular junction (my mom lives nearby but is already planning on being out of town). A lot of this stems from our immediate family's abnegation of any kind of family get-together. My dad doesn't want to do it and now lives somewhere where it isn't practical. My mom lives by herself and can't cook and has a tiny place, she's not hosting anything. My mother-in-law is insane, broke and hates her family. My brother is down in Joshua Tree but he has his own thing with friends he usually goes to. So the logical thing to do would be make *our* home the traditional family Thanksgiving site, but my wife doesn't want to play hostess for both that and Christmas so back to square one.

I'm just bitching, no need to offer solutions...

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 22:36 (eight years ago) link

yeah it's kind of the worst holiday imo

being "thankful" is nice i guess but if you hate sports, eating a bunch of foods that mostly taste the same, and being forced to make awkward small talk w/ relatives and smile politely when they make awful remarks about politics, there's not much else to get out of thanksgiving

i have fond memories of making construction paper turkeys in kindergarten, that's about it

I hate traveling by train, even less than 100 miles, this Wed-Fri. So I got a bye this year.

also get annoyed w/ all of the endless smug thinkpieces all my fb friends link to every year about the terrible history behind thanksgiving, as if nobody has ever noticed or talked about this before

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 23 November 2015 22:38 (eight years ago) link

Haha I would use any excuse to go to Yank Sing

brimstead, Monday, 23 November 2015 22:39 (eight years ago) link

well my wife and I would like nothing more than a big meal with a bunch of family members - that would be great - but neither of our respective families are actually into doing this.

the kids like Asian food, it probably is going to end up being Yank Sing for us.
