Because guess what...

As for the original -- a bit of a surprising stalwart/standard from my younger days in terms of memory. I was six, it was Disney, something to see in the theater, and I did like the dragon and all. Also our third grade class had a copy of the storybook/soundtrack on vinyl so I kinda know all the songs by default, well beyond "Candle on the Water." "Every little piece..."

A dragon! A dragon! I swear I saw a dragon!

I'm sure that there's a Pete's thread already?
PD was my favorite movie as a very small child. I loved Elliot so much. I also do a very good impression of him and this movie makes me cry so much.
I am not pleased about this remake. Ugh.

I thought there was a Pete's thread too! Maybe I just missed it.

My mom made me a little dragon pillow thing because I loved Elliott so much but I chewed everything as a kid and I would chew it while falling asleep. She'd repair it by cutting off the chewed up parts, pushing the stuffing down, and sewing it up again. Eventually my Elliott was just a nub of a tail but I still made her let me sleep with it.

I don't think I've ever actually seen the movie but I'm suddenly remembering I had that storybook/soundtrack you mention when I was a kid. Those songs are coming back to me in a Proustian rush.

I think I lump this movie in with The Black Stallion due to time frame and the Mickey Rooney connection. Also 1977 to 1982 is still my not-so-secret favorite Disney stretch just for the inescapable nostalgia hits (this, The Black Hole, Tron, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound and The Secret of NIMH as a crypto-Disney effort thanks to Don Bluth).

Oh god the Secret of NIMH! AH! I was 0-5 during that time so I don't remember most of those but NIMH and PD I definitely remember well.

We did discuss the original, I think on a general Disney thread. My kid was obsessed with it for a while. Kind of a weird, dark and effed up movie in the Disney canon.

True of many Disney movies released under Ron Miller.

Reviews are pretty positive (for Sausage Party too, both films seem like end of summer dumps).
