Amy Holmes is one of the least trolly conservative talking heads I've ever come across, but that was indeed surprising.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 16:57 (nine years ago) link

Digging this so far, but it could benefit immensely from an HBO format; the panel totally works, but just when things are about to ramp up, Larry has to cut to commercial.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 23 January 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

that does interrupt the flow a bit, you can't script those things to be timed to commercial breaks. nothin they can do about it tho

Οὖτις, Friday, 23 January 2015 17:03 (nine years ago) link

not feelin it so far. I like Larry well enough but I am not a fan of the panel format in general - I find it grating and awkward. So far on this show the conversation between panelists is annoyingly edited and the panelists seem to have prepared zingers which they try to pass off as spontaneous (anyone else think this or am I crazy?).

franny glasshole (franny glass), Friday, 23 January 2015 21:14 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i think the panel segment hasn't found its rhythm yet, but the front 1/3 is good

I did notice a few edit points; it'd be cool if they posted the unedited panel segments on the web. The only prepared zingers I've noticed were from the comedians on the panel, which I think is to be expected. It doesn't strike me as grating, though there's just a touch of awkwardness when Wilmore wants to shoehorn in something funny, but the panel keeps moving.

'keep it 100' segment is awesome

went to a live taping of the last episode, not my favorite but when you have a guy who's killed 40 people on a comedy show it tends to sink it a bit

tbh i think the panel stuff is better than the opening monologue (so far)—feel like wilmore is still getting his own rhythm together. I don't think much was actually edited out of the panel discussion, at least from the ep i saw in person

one month passes...

This show rules. More consistent than either the Daily Show or Colbert Report.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 16:53 (nine years ago) link

I've noticed they've started to mix up the routine. Sometimes the panel gets two segments, sometimes only one, and they aren't doing Keep it 100 every night. Unfortunately the man-on-the-street and the in-studio comedy bits aren't always great.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

Also, bringing in Jim Norton on an episode specifically about female empowerment seems like trolling.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

Yeah and Larry can put his foot in his mouth sometimes trying to be funny. Still, it's better than Colbert's mock advertising or Stewart picking through Fox News's garbage.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:03 (nine years ago) link

When Daymond John was one of the guests the other night I swear he didn't say one thing the whole episode! As in, even if he did it was edited out. They did cut to him laughing a few times though.

Evan, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:07 (nine years ago) link

again, it's embarrassing that they can't consistently get better guests.

having a panellist disappear in the middle of a show, seems odd.

the show still doesn't seem to know what it is, i don't think. keeps tweaking the format, seemingly at random.

koogs, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:42 (nine years ago) link

I didn't enjoy last night's show at all, with Keith Robinson making weird sex change comments and Larry going all in on execution and Alex Wagner disappearing before the final segment, it was just an ugly episode.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:46 (nine years ago) link

I haven't watched in a few weeks, have I missed anything good

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link

The panels are 3 guests now instead of 4, and they tweaked the set a little bit with a new roundtable. Content is still hit or miss depending on the topic/guest combo.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link

The show just seems like it's trying too hard to capitalize on the think piece trend. Like they needed an angle with this show and they see how both think pieces are popular and how shows like John Oliver can resonate on the web afterwards, so they keep attempting to provoke that effect.

Evan, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:00 (nine years ago) link

At least with Maher's show the conversations actually come about pretty naturally, yet LW segments like "weak tea" feel forced due to timing constraints and desperation to inspire think pieces imo.

Evan, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:09 (nine years ago) link

It's been quite a while since they've done a straightforward "Keep it 100" segment.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:10 (nine years ago) link

watching some of these made me realize that i kinda got all the larry i needed on the daily show. like, it was the perfect amount of larry. kinda like when you meet someone who you think is funny/interesting and it turns out they aren't as funny/interesting when you spend a lot of time with them.

scott seward, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link

I dunno, I still watch every night because I like Larry in general. If it was 30 minutes of Lewis Black every night, I'd probably be homicidal.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

i like wilmore too. i hope they figure this out, every time i peek in it seems like a work in progress

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:59 (nine years ago) link

I think the Daily Show Wilmore counts as more of a character ala the "Stephen Colbert" character that spun off into the Colbert Report (which built on the ridiculousness of his Daily Show appearances). Wilmore's show is boring and too nice because Wilmore seems like a genuinely nice, kinda boring guy and he doesn't have the force of personality of a Maher, Stewart, or Oliver. He moderates when inciting people would make a better show.

Also kinda seems like the Nightly Show is, in general, too afraid to be too similar to any of the other news-comedy shows and wind up being a bland version of all of them.

Yeah. I don't blame Stewart for wanting out of a stressful job, that's totally understandable, but it would have been so perfect for him to stay through this campaign and go out on top. I guess the idea was that it would be a perfect time for his replacement because of the never ending gift of trump.

Samantha Bee is the only show that exists for me in this category. I watch John Oliver if I'm interested in the insights his team's research brings to light. The joke writing and delivery seems forcefully shoehorned in to meet "comedy" quotas. watching this finale, i liked this cast way more than the new Daily Show cast. Franchesca Ramsey, Holly Walker, Robin Thede, and Jordan Carlos all way better than the DS crew, which feels stuck in this mock-cynical rut.

man the Daily Show didn't really care about these guys at all, i think the cancellation got a single tossed-off mention "I guess they were kind of colleagues of ours". a far cry from the days where Stewart and Colbert would promote each other on the reg.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 19 August 2016 14:38 (seven years ago) link

New Daily Show just lacks a soul. And Noah is a twerp who'd rather be doing hacky standup. The Nightly Show was weird and kind of clunky at times but seeing so many people of color on a show get to voice their opinions was fucking great.

everything i know i learned from facebook and nu-daily show and larry never ever get any time on my FB. as opposed to stewart and colbert which were constantly linked to for years. john oliver definitely gets all kinds of liberal outrage linkage. no social media buzz is pretty dire nowadays.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:21 (seven years ago) link

Nu-Daily is largely garbage, so that's not surprising. Much of Nightly was too nuanced for fb links, though. They mainly covered ongoing issues/behaviors. Sometimes they were really on point about a particular current event, but mostly it was a continuous discussion.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:24 (seven years ago) link

obviously "nuance" isn't what t.v. people are looking for when it comes to tweet links.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:26 (seven years ago) link

i feel bad because i loved larry on the daily show but i didn't really love him as host early on with his show and i kinda stopped watching. i didn't mind the back and forth of the guests but even that reminded me of a less exciting politically incorrect or somethng. and keeping it 100 seemed corny to me. but i adore black-ish so i get larry in spirit anyway.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:30 (seven years ago) link

They still had a panel every night, but they largely phased out the Keep It 100 gimmick and cut it down to one guest + 2 cast instead of 3 guests + 1 cast which was much easier to control. And the chemistry the cast ended up having was on par with Colbert/Carell era TDS.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 03:33 (seven years ago) link
