Nice to see 20yo Margarita Gasparyan (RUS) qualify, she's been killing everyone in ITFs this year - a 27-4 w/l record. First WTA Slam debutante with a single-handed BH since Naomi Broady in 2011. On the verge of becoming the first new top 100 player with a single-handed BH since CSN in...2008? Now we need Mayo Hibi to happen to ensure the shot's survival...

lex pretend, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:22 (eight years ago) link

yea that site is garbage

I have a hard time seeing rafa win a set off novak, let alone beat him

johnny crunch, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:23 (eight years ago) link

I sort of hope Rafa will lose before the QF. He should be OK to R4 and then Dimitrov...or Sock...or Coric?

lex pretend, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:36 (eight years ago) link

Murray is also in the same section as Novak and Nadal.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:38 (eight years ago) link

He's not, he's third seed (well, he's in the same half I guess)

lex pretend, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:42 (eight years ago) link

Sorry I meant the same half.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:44 (eight years ago) link

Everyone saying Fed has an easy draw but a cush draw did nothing for him at the last two Slams.

lex pretend, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:53 (eight years ago) link

He can lose anytime now, though if I wanted him to win one more slam it would be this one.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:57 (eight years ago) link

cmon I get that fed's at a win or nothing standard, but he had a very good us open, bad loss in the semis but it was to the eventual champ

johnny crunch, Friday, 22 May 2015 12:59 (eight years ago) link

i'm still going with nadal lol

Qualifiers done! Aside from Gasparyan they include

- Veronica Cepede Royg making her Slam debut, the first Paraguayan since Rossana de los Rios
- 2012 RG boys' champion Kimmer Coppejans making his Slam debut
- Elias Ymer and Christian Lindell - the first Swedish men in a Slam MD since Soderling, astonishingly
- Olivia Rogowska makes her 12th Slam MD - but the first time she's made it through qualifying (she's had 11 WCs and was a LL once)
- Andrea Arnaboldi, fresh off his 27-25 third set win yesterday, played another three-setter to qualify - impressive

I played racketrally in the AO but never even checked back...the whole buying shares thing was too complicated for me.

Says a lot that I have more misgivings about Garcia taking the most perfect quarter she could have got (lmao that she's magnetised to Ivanovic) than about that improbable Monfils run to the final

Still cackling that Bouchard drew the worst possible floater

lex pretend, Friday, 22 May 2015 21:29 (eight years ago) link

Lucic-Baroni put last weeks horrendous 6-4 5-0 choke vs Keys behind her! Good win over Davis, she needed that. Halep rematch next.

lex pretend, Sunday, 24 May 2015 11:52 (eight years ago) link

The White Mug closed out Martic with a service winner, two aces and a FH winner. R2 vs Giorgi, who dealt with Tatjana Maria's junk surprisingly efficiently, should be good.

This is why one should always have grave misgivings concerning Garcia fulfilling her potential

lex pretend, Sunday, 24 May 2015 14:14 (eight years ago) link

Garcia gifted the third set break to Vekic with a horrendous DF, somehow got it back courtesy of two consecutive dead net cords that went her way, then played an even worse service game just to refute that luck. Truly the New Mauresmo

lex pretend, Sunday, 24 May 2015 14:35 (eight years ago) link

Ivanovic breathes a sigh of relief

groovemaaan, Sunday, 24 May 2015 14:46 (eight years ago) link

Total meltdown by the end. Every time Garcia approached the net with a FH putaway beckoning you knew she'd balloon it long.

Maybe it'll resurrect Vekic's career! God knows she needed that win.

Ivanovic probably even more likely to lose to Shvedova now.

HI EVERYONE

I had to leave just now due to a social engagement but I HAD A LOT FUN TODAY. The Kyrgios/Istomin match reached heights of hilarity that rival the biggest WTA mess, and you wouldn't have guessed it from the routine scoreline. Kyrgios still hasn't learned the meaning of "internal monologue" which makes him incredibly entertaining to watch in person. He's like Hewitt with occasional sportsmanship and constant showmanship, with the temper of Fognini.

haven't been watching venus/stephens bc i was too invested in that allertova/konta set. konta had soooooooooooooooo many set points in that TB, allertova takes it on like her 2nd or 3rd. 7-6 (19-17)

surm, Monday, 25 May 2015 23:13 (eight years ago) link

Really love Edmund's game, his FH is exactly the right balance between reliability and power.

Razzano is such a weirdo to be underhand serving (and DFing lmao) when leading. You were that nervous closing it out huh?

Konta/Allertova were both so undemonstrative that they even made a 19-17 TB a zen experience. Barely a fistpump or c'mon, watch and learn everyone else.

Didn't think Sloane/Venus was a great match even in the first set, Venus was embarrassing in the second set.

RIP Aga's career

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 07:35 (eight years ago) link

Best shade I've seen re: Aga recently is that she's still the magician of the WTA - she made her own career disappear.

Navratilova is a red herring though. She's been declining ever since that AO SF vs Cibulkova.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 10:10 (eight years ago) link

What makes this even more worrying for Townsend is that Smitkova - who is very talented - is playing at about 20% herself. Very error-strewn and nervous. And still cruising.

Something Mauresmo-esque about this win. First Slam unexpected and comes, for many, with an asterisk re: an injured, more-accomplished player. Second Slam erases all doubts with a brilliant display in the final - and denies a dominant player the one Slam they're missing...

Roll of honour:

Men's singles: Stan Wawrinka
Women's singles: Serena Williams
Men's doubles: Ivan Dodig & Marcelo Melo
Women's doubles: Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Lucie Safarova
Mixed doubles: Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Mike Bryan
Boys' singles: Tommy Paul
Girls' singles: Paula Badosa Gibert
Boys' doubles: Alvaro Lopez San Martin & Jaume Munar
Girls' doubles: Miriam Kolodziejova & Marketa Vondrousova

I saw a bit of the juniors while I was out there: Vondrousova was top girls' seed and was a very fitting warm-up for Safarova - tall, big-hitting lefty. Boys' finalist Taylor Harry Fritz managed to turn the crowd against him in his QF against a Chilean player - he was dominating, but after a couple of good winners he had this habit of turning to his opponent with this smarmy shit-eating grin on his face. Not edifying.

Not having a French Open will hurt far more. Bet Becker isn't as criticised as Mauresmo would've been had Murray lost today. Their partnership is in question as I think its reasonable to think Djoko would've won Wimbledon against Fed (D's final set rec is terrific as you pointed out from the stats) and Murray lost it by himself in the Aussie open.

This wasn't the fail as it was against Kei, but still...should be a fascinating Wimbledon.
