Classic for Lola, Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I haven't seen the others, but Criterion released a dual edition set last year. I hope to watch Une Chambre de Ville this week.

Lola thru Donkey Skin is a helluva 6-feature start. Haven't seen the rest yet.

Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and Peau d'Âne are both great. The latter is very strange but has an excellent turn from Delphine Seyrig as an earthy fairy, Deneuve at her most luminous and a very sweet song about baking.

Forgot about Donkey Skin. Still the least heralded New Wave director – too swishy?

Possibly? It seems like he gets the critical treatment akin to some of the Hollywood Dream Factory directors (Minnelli etc.) he so clearly took after.
I got the CC box (dual-format!) for my birthday last year. That night I had dinner (and alotta wine) with my best and oldest friend, her fiance, and a young friend of theirs whose own birthday was like the next day. We ended the night by cracking open the set and watching The Umbrellas of Cherbourg bluray (which is effin' GORGEOUS btw), a film of which I was the only one of us who'd seen before. When it was over, the kid called one of the best things he'd ever seen. My friend, though, was weeping buckets, and began to yell at the TV, "Fuck you, movie! I don't wanna cry!" and other things along those lines before calming down for what was actually a nice group discussion about the film's themes.
I cherish this memory.

I'm guessing there are probably still a bunch of pretty unknown New Wave directors. Jaques Rozier comes to mind. I've never seen a Rozier film, but apparently Adieu Philippine was thought of highly back then.
I've only seen Lola, Cherbourg and Rochefort, but they are all amazing. Young Girls of Rochefort is one of my favorite films ever. I need to see the later ones, I think. Use Chamber un Ville especially got some raves when it was rereleased.

i think i'll re-watch the intro to demoiselles de rochefort right now. i love everything about it--the framing, the weird-ass choreography, the camera movements, the mix of naturalistic and bright stylized color. i guess all that stuff extends to the whole film, which is fantastic, but the opening few minutes are particularly perfect.

chambre en ville is really weird and the legrand score isn't particularly memorable IMO but it's very watchable.
demy made a few truly execrable films, though, which it's probably best to forget.

I watched the first 10 minutes twice last night, marveling. It's the only major Demy I hadn't seen (I realized I'd caught a glimpse of Donkey Skin in childhood on PBS). So much of the film reminded me of Tati.

Wonderful. I need to watch Rochefort again.

The background dancers and extras add so much to that movie. You'll sometimes see people dancing in some distant corner of the background. There's a wonderful illusion that the choreography is continuing outside the scene as well.

Watched Jacques Demy’s Lola (1961), another really great first feature film. Its view of Nantes at the time and the performances of Anouk Aimée and especially Marc Michel were amazing. I like seeing films like this where you can empathize with pretty much every character, and the slightly backlit photography was beautiful.

It focused on missed connections and made a point of showing how hurt feelings and unrealized dreams can get in the way of life
But also “We're alone and we stay alone. But what counts is to want something, no matter what it takes. There's a bit of happiness in simply wanting happiness.” The fairy tale ending seemed purposely very false and stiff

I enjoyed Demy's first four films, yet I have it in mind that I'm "not really a fan". Maybe I have a prejudice that he's lightweight, and also I'm not too interested in any of the films I haven't seen, despite Spirit.

don't agree he's a lightweight. you are dismissive of so many films

I did say it might be a prejudice, because I have actually appreciated the ones I've seen.

Please stop posting about Jacques Demy in the Jacques Demy thread, I find his films very upsetting.
The two famous musicals are good looking and obviously inventive, but not really my kind of thing. Model Shop, though--which I discovered via L.A. Plays Itself (one of the best L.A. films ever, according to Thom Andersen), not Mad Men--I liked a lot; lots of aimless, contemplative driving scenes, if you like that kind of thing.

I find the influence of Demy on Assayas and Denis rather pronounced: it's precisely his lightness, the way his best material gives textured glances at devastation.

I don't feel that way; I watch them carefully, think about them a lot, and when I post I try to say something that interests me that no-one else on here has said.
