as something distinct from the present

dead (Lamp), Friday, 31 July 2015 15:57 (eight years ago) link

nah, time is an illusion

bizarro gazzara, Friday, 31 July 2015 15:58 (eight years ago) link

I believe in ever increasing entropy.

things get generally better I find doom-mongering not much more than a manifestation of ego spread out to cover an entire generation so yeah the future nice one can't wait

Not sure the present has an identity distinct from the future or the past. They all require each other as reference points.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 July 2015 16:11 (eight years ago) link

you mean as in its not being shit

j., Friday, 31 July 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

Yeah per the law of Beavis and Butthead.

i once was stoned and wrote the following proof on my phone

definition:
x: sequence of parameters in R^infinity
t: time (in R)
U(x,t) : R^infinity x R -> R^3 (universe function)
the past = int_{-infinity}^{t} U(x,t) dt
future = int_{t}^{+infinity} U(x,t) dt
present = int_{t}^{t} U(x,t) dt
theorem: only the past exists
proof: the future hasn't happened yet so its existence is unverifiable. the present has measure zero. qed

when you start thinking about events on a geologic time-scale even Ancient History is absurdly irrelevant and recent, and it makes our anthropocene future look very doomed + not very long by previous epochal standards.

xelab, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link

Lol

The Once-ler, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:47 (eight years ago) link

That was for xp

whenever people say this i'm like... so what?

flopson, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link

Exactly.

Also my main reason for pushing for carbon emission caps is because I want a better selection of hybrids with better mileage.

The Once-ler, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:53 (eight years ago) link

like it's not like anyone was impatiently checking their watch during the billions of years when the earth was a lifeless pebble?

flopson, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:54 (eight years ago) link

how come the range of U(.) is R^3

tpp, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:56 (eight years ago) link

(not that it affects the statement of your undeniable proof)

tpp, Friday, 31 July 2015 19:57 (eight years ago) link

how many dimensions does the universe you live in have?

flopson, Friday, 31 July 2015 20:00 (eight years ago) link

holding time constant obv

i count three

flopson, Friday, 31 July 2015 20:00 (eight years ago) link

ok.

idk whether you need to integrate over all possible futures

tpp, Friday, 31 July 2015 20:15 (eight years ago) link

i believe in the post-history

Mordy, Friday, 31 July 2015 20:19 (eight years ago) link

integrating over all possible futures would be

int_X int_t^infty U(x,t) dt dx

no?

flopson, Friday, 31 July 2015 20:44 (eight years ago) link

i think the future will be p cool as long as we don't bake the shit out of our skies and my grandkids don't have to live beneath the dirt

sometimes i'm sad that i wasn't born further in the future. now that we're really good at preserving stuff you can listen to all the pop songs from before you were born, so being born later just means you can listen to more pop songs. it's sad that there will be jams after i die that i'll never get to hear

flopson, Friday, 31 July 2015 21:00 (eight years ago) link

i believe in the post-history.

I'm living it.

feel like i was born at a pretty decent time. i have disposable contacts, air conditioning, saw culture club in an arena. lotta good jams to download, more than i can even listen to. (np: 'da butt')

the future is probably going to happen but in general i don't really want to be a part of it

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 August 2015 00:05 (eight years ago) link

I love the future.
