absolute charmer, although obviously a smooth operator past compare. *he* approached *us* - the youngest kid and I - as we perused the scottish senior open scoreboard - i was asking someone else some perfectly unassuming questions about scoring systems and suddenly here's alex bidding us good day, holding court, talking about his round (he answered my few questions very enthusiastically), gathering us for photos and suggesting we sent them to him so he'd put them on social media

he was extremely courteous throughout. as i say, he initiated the meeting, which struck me as a faintly amazing thing for a high-profile politician to do

the parents of the family i was working for obviously oppose him with virtually every sinew but the dad (who was there) still came off slightly awestruck. the kids had been speaking of him in hushed tones (knowing he was there) - painting him as something halfway between a boogeyman and a deity - and he certainly lived up to expectations
