I haven't read much fantasy since I was a kid so maybe it's change, but endings have always been a problem in the genre because it's often, like, a bunch of pre-ordained prophecies coming true. somehow that's not dramatically interesting. I actually think Tolkien did pretty well with LOTR, the melancholy passing of an age. If GOT has balls it'll do something similar: an incipient modernity, or some whole new order--and not just a return to a peaceful monarchical rule.

Daenerys won't end up on the throne, my guess is she realizes she's needed back on the other side of the sea, to rule there in a new peaceful kingdom w/o slavery.
jon doesn't want the crown in the north, doubt he wants the seven kingdoms.
Sansa and Arya, nah.
my money is on a dark horse candidate, someone who is completely decent and everyone likes and respects but no one has thought of as a leader despite their leadership qualities. I'm gonna bet it on 100-1 longshot Davos.

x-posts: I think GRRM might be planning to do something like that in the books, but I don't think Benioff and Weiss understands what he's getting at. I read someone who said it felt as if the show was making Westeros 'safe for aristocracy', which seems correct.

given that there are only about half a dozen significant characters who aren't noble-born things don't seem well set up for sudden turn to democracy

In episode 1 of this season Jon Snow said: "I will not punish a son for his father's sins, and I will not take a family home away from a family it has belonged to for centuries" That made me think the show runners don't really get what GRRM is trying to say about feudal society.

Fred otm. Lots of stuff about how the royals are always fucking over the regular folks in the realm. It's called "Game" of Thrones. Maybe Dondarrion leads an uprising after Free Folk/Night's Watch, and random Northerners are forced to take on the White Walkers themselves?

Surprised at this expectancy that the show ends with the throne intact with a specific character on it. Surely its permanent destruction followed by a...Presidential election...is the more satisfying outcome.

― gbx, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:38
Vehemently disagree. At the the last fight I was praying please just kill this tedious Kaiser Chiefs member quickly.
I know the show has had low points before and it was never going to completely recover but I have a bad feeling it's not going right itself again. Feel like it hit a new low.
Quite enjoyed the Sam, Jorah and Broadbent stuff though.
Feel a little annoyed that Dany's story will never pay off. She never got interesting and her settings were usually the least interesting part. Would be great if Varys kills her.
My prefferred ending: everyone goes into the final battle then it cuts away to Sam bonking Gilly and writing his own Kama Sutra for 6 episodes, then GRR Martin pops up and says "wait for my version, available at all good bookstores".

Dany survives and will request of Varys and Tyrion that they invent something called "democracy" - a series of elections ensue, followed by footage of Trump's inauguration, and then

In retrospect I'm disappointed that they took one of my favorite characters, Tyrion, and exiled him to the land of bad writing, acting, and set design. He even explicitly references his plight in that one scene where he tries to get them to drink and tell a funny story
