AMC's Preacher: Jesse With The Good Hair

Yeah I know there's a reboot thread on ILC but it's mostly comic talk and I wanna talk about Dominic Cooper's hair

First ep was A+, second ep was a biiit slower but I am really enjoying the series so far. The casting, tone, music, the look, all Veg-bait for me.

What say you?

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:07 (seven years ago) link

that is an amazing thread title

really enjoyed the pilot, haven't gotten to the second one yet. dom cooper's accent /is/ bad though not as awful as some of the criticism indicated. also these versions of cassidy and tulip are considerably more entertaining than their origins.

tbh i am v proud of the thread title :D

the accents are def ~not good~ but for all the stuff they do well here it's not really a dealbreaker

otm re cassidy & tulip

i like that theyve jiggered with the story enough that i dont really know what to expect, makes it easier to just watch & see what happens

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 June 2016 05:40 (seven years ago) link

I think Tulip is actually played by an Irish actor. Unless the Dublin accent she has in Love/Hate is as fake as that caricature that Cassidy has in this. She sounds a lot more genuine.
I started reading the graphic novel again and think I prefer it. Wondering if major rearrangement of story line is just because of conventional tv narrative, still not sure.
But this gives him a permanent base among parishoners and the comic has everything around him destroyed and him on the run. &thereby only chancing into his ex Tulip who's in Cassidy's pickup truck again by chance. She's a great shot but she's blundered over a hit, presumably her first, because she isn't a killer.
There's also the back story about Jesse's upbringing. Wonder how much of that will appear.
&supernatural elements apart from Cassidy as vampire are far more of a thread in the book. Angels are introduced almost immediately. I haven't seen one yet in the show.

Stevolende, Friday, 10 June 2016 07:00 (seven years ago) link

dunno what theyre going to do with his backstory

i guess they have plenty of time to work up to it, what with going all the way back to 1881 lol

did anyone else notice the mascot at the whorehouse, that made me lol

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 June 2016 07:39 (seven years ago) link

I assume 1881 thing was origin of Saint of Killers. The comic had a several issue spin off series which I've yet to reread.

Stevolende, Friday, 10 June 2016 08:00 (seven years ago) link

This seems to be missing one of the major draws of the comic, ie a propulsive storyline. Plenty to enjoy in the design and performances, but it's oddly meandering so far.

Jesse's character seems a lot more ill-defined than in the comics?

Yeah this.

It's a lot of fun and I'm really enjoying it but it definitely needs more of a plot as it's quite confusing so far (and I've read all the comics). Like they briefly set up the Saint of Killers origin last week but haven't returned to it at all yet. And now they've thrown in bits of the "Carlos" backstory this week (assume he'll have some connection to Jesse's past from the comics but who knows) but still haven't really touched on what was the main driving force of the books.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 07:54 (seven years ago) link

Haven't seen any of the show yet, but that's a very good point about the comic. It was ultimately total junk but it did have that addictive month-to-month 'what's gonna happen next?!' quality going for it.

OTM. They need to get past the scene-setting into an actual story asap.

I still really like it, but yeah, weirdly meandering is a good description

Like the whole thing with the paintball brothel & the girl falling into the sinkhole just seemed very arbitrary, and oh hey Tulip meets Cass & that's intense & crazy & then *blip* we're done

The plotting feels very distracted atm

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 20 June 2016 16:29 (seven years ago) link

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 20 June 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

Still odd that they haven't returned to the Saint of Killers. If you hadn't read the comics you'd be wondering what the hell the point of that was (if you hadn't already forgotten about it).

groovypanda, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 07:38 (seven years ago) link

I just saw Annville on a hotel at the beginning of the show. Then watched about 10 more minutes where I noticed other stories had morphed pretty heavily before giving up last night. Will probably give it another shot though.
That boss guy is pretty unrecognisable from the comic. The guy who in this seems to be a relatively normal guy of a little below average height is the poison dwarf with links to the Klan etc in the comics.
Have they had to tone everything down for the tv apart from that 'Dublin' accent?
Would have thought Cassidy could have got pointers from Tulip's actress cos she does a Dublin accent much better than he can. Or is this supposed to be for clarity for a US audience whereas Love/Hate is for an Irish one that might be better able to decipher it. (&in which it's surrounded by even thicker Dub accents).

Do wonder if I'd be enjoying this more if I wasn't reading the comic at the same time.
Just looking at things like chronology and cause and effect in the comic vs tv series and seeing things very adrift.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 09:12 (seven years ago) link

I really enjoyed the pilot but since then it has just meandered around looking for a plot. I really don't understand what's going on with Tulip at the brothel, unless it was all just to get her to meet Cass.

Horizontal Superman is invulnerable (aldo), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 09:27 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, just thinking that they've had to totally reshape story for this one town setting. Don't see why it couldn't be a road story. Supernatural has managed to do that ok.
Have also wondered how blasphemous or whatever this is allowed to get. Are they having to totally dispense with the inbred descendants of Jesus and also The Grail. Might have thought you could have portrayed the latter. & with them gone they've had to redirect everything else and make a new villain.
I brought up Supernatural before but was thinking they recently portrayed God as a character that wasn't 100% sympathetic. So it can be done, &that's not the only place.
Also why is Jesse a full time Preacher not somebody who had been forced into it?

I've been waiting for the story to begin. But we're 4 episodes in already.
Right, looks like based on graphic novels means more touches on than follows story of. Not sure I'm going to stick with this after this episode.

Wonder how a show like this is translated between media or is that standard? Does it tend to get edited by comittee or something. Or still have station taboos of what not to go near?
Cos other shows seem to go comic to tv a lot better. But I'm not familiar with exact sources for superhero shows so not sure if they're leaving things out like that.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 10:00 (seven years ago) link

Have they taken a comic that is inherently scatological, irreverent, possibly blasphemous from some viewpoints and made it into a quirky feel good near-Xian show? I'm getting that feeling after watching #4.

Also wondering what the story is on having a schoolbus that is still circling all night several weeks after the beginning of the series? Can't remember what Jesse said to the bus driver apart from forget the girl. But would think that there was no practical way of getting a diesel guzzling heavy vehicle to run continuously for weeks.
& I certainly don't remember it as an image taht was present in the comic. Especially since they weren't stuck in the same place long enough to see something like that.

Tulip has been revealed to have a different name now and a mother that lived longer than childbirth. So wonder what the story on her being an expert marksman is? Is she still one? Still not getting why she's based in the whorehouse though since they've made the story fixed location and haven't got her back with Jesse full time after having only been forcefully separated by his relatives. & what is the story on them now that Annville is the name of a hotel not their bayou house. Again, have all the darker features of the comic book been removed all but nominally.

I assume that the jet that Cassidy was fighting in at the very beginning was morphed out of the one they were escaping Monument Valley in.
Do wish I could take a step back from reading the comic book when watching this but do think it has been heavily defanged.
Can now see something of what GRRM readers are thinking on watching the tv series I guess.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 10:34 (seven years ago) link

Game of Thrones has pretty much loyally followed the books though (with a few necessary changes for TV).

Preacher (so far) just seems to have taken various characters from the comics but none of the storylines.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 10:40 (seven years ago) link

Other comic book shows generally have a fixed setting/milieu and a long collection of stories to mix and match between (as most of them don't change the status quo that much). That Preacher has a fixed beginning-then-middle-then-end* story and a constant sense of movement was always going to be an awkward fit, I suppose.

*okay okay, with a lot of water treading in there.

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 15:07 (seven years ago) link

I'm enjoying the slow-burn pace of this show so far, actually. If it was just wall-to-wall scatology(which is what I was worried about when I heard Rogen & Goldberg were involved) I think it would get tiring pretty quickly.

With regard to whether Preacher the TV show is pro-xtian, I think what they are establishing is Jesse's mistaken belief that he has been chosen as an instrument of God, rather than just a random victim of circumstance. The main throughline so far appears to be his overconfidence in believing that he can use his new powers to do good and solve everyone's problems, which looks set to backfire horribly(set up in the pilot via the guy with mother issues). The fact that he has just instructed an obvious sociopath like Quincannon to "Serve god" without giving any specifics is surely going to result in something terrible further down the line.

agreed re the black comedy

also i think it'll be interesting once jesse realize his power can only compel on a material level & not spiritually, as in the busdriver pedophile who has now clearly lost his memory but not his predelictions
etc

Are they having to totally dispense with the inbred descendants of Jesus and also The Grail.

They've already mentioned the Grail, and we've had a glimpse of a white-suited man who is presumably Starr.

I sort of agree with everyone's cristicisms, but I think it's too early to call. Maybe they're going to spend the whole first season on setting up the quest and then explode into crazy road trip mode in (the hopefully higher budgeted) S2? Also, I doubt it will be as blasphemous as the comic, but I also doubt this telling of the story will end up remotely pro-Christian.

As an aside, my girlfriend, who had not even heard of the comics, is enjoying it a lot. I suspect she really fancies Joe Gilgun though.

I can't make much sense of this setting up of the Saint of Killers. I don't think it makes him out to be a hardcore mean bastard killer which he needs to be for the next thing with him to happen. Also couldn't really see the Preacher's motivation in killing his horse.
Or why if he's already in town and not having to fight his way back through a blizzard to get a horse, the Saint didn't get or borrow another one. So not getting what they've swapped the story to. So far he's lost a family and tried to save a kid, for some not very clear reason which does seem to go against his utter badness.

I keep watching this though.

Appreciated that they wrapped up Cassidy, too, and how that went down. Reminded me slightly of one scene from Harold & Maude. Also glad they kept the Cassidy / Tulip romance, but didn't go the comic's junkie prisoner route.

Favorite part of the comic was the reveal of Jesse's mom, so wished they'd added that into the second season, but overall a good adaptation of the comics, and happy with it.
