2 classic Super Nintendo games
(randomly selected from an assortment of time-honored, awesome games)

I bet!

classics like the nba live game they feature on the main photo (the snes versions of it have not aged well at all)

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 02:34 (seven years ago) link

i will try to do this by the end of this week but a reminder around friday would really help

i meant to play more of these again before voting but it's never going to happen (still haven't even ordered the snes usb controller i wanted to pick up) so this is entirely based off what i loved as a child

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link

I did just enough dipping into games a few weeks ago to do some rearranging of the lower half of the ballot. The top was a lot easier - played the shit out of them and recalling their qualities and shortcomings is practically SPINAL FUNCTION.

Yeah, same here! I tried to channel long lost Nintendo reflex intuition when picking games

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 15 September 2016 02:56 (seven years ago) link

Ballot is tough but thankfully I'm able to drop some games (even though they're classics) because I had them on PC and therefore never bought their console version (Lemmings, Another World, Populous etc.).

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Thursday, 15 September 2016 11:01 (seven years ago) link

oh shit i would've voted for another world but i knew it as out of this world and i missed it in the list (where i know it's listed w/ both names but i guess i was scanning too quickly)

My memories of that game are much fonder than my current feelings from replaying it and trying to figure out what the fuck I'm supposed to do to get past the point five minutes in where I've died approximately one billion times so far.

Imma break out my PS3 Genesis collection this weekend and try to ballot it up soon thereafter.

a simba man (Will M.), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:09 (seven years ago) link

Do I have to attach a spreadsheet to the e-mail or can I just put the list in the message?

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

list in e-mail is fine! ideally a copy paste from the original list tho :) thanks!

a simba man (Will M.), Thursday, 15 September 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

gotcha, thanks

I gave Another World a spin recently and was sad to realize that despite its super amazng atmosphere it's a pretty dubious gaming experience. If I understand it right, the company was inspired by an Amiga port of Dragon's Lair, and boy does it feel like it - a 100% linear experience where every encounter has exactly one correct move and everything else is instant death, sending you back to redo a bunch of stuff. I imagine back in the day it could have been really satisfying to work it all out through trial and (endless) error, and then nail it on one perfect run, but in 2016 I just couldn't get with that. I do love the graphics and the learn/infer from almost no information approach to story and world.

i'm not sure if i ever played another world but i associate it strongly with flashback, which in my memory is great and weird and atmospheric and cinematic but maybe wouldn't hold up now. as i recall i never did get past a part where you have to compete in a running man-style game show.

i won't have time to re-play stuff but as this was my #1 gaming generation i'll try to throw together a ballot based on fuzzy memories alone

Dragon's Lair was exactly the comparison I wanted to make last night but I couldn't be bothered to wrestle with my phone. Pretty games for their time, sure, but basically just unfun memory tests on the narrowest of rails.

you can't drowned a duck (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 September 2016 05:47 (seven years ago) link

speaking of basically just unfun memory tests on the narrowest of rails, can we talk about Time Traveler?

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 16 September 2016 07:17 (seven years ago) link

aka the "cowboy hologram game", same generation, only in arcades, but what a game! well I never got very far in it, maybe it's a terrible game but to see this in an arcade was absolutely the most "futuristic" thing imaginable.

holograms yo! I like that we're still trying to make holograms a thing in 2016. the world needs dreamers.

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 16 September 2016 07:29 (seven years ago) link

There's never been an Arcade Game Poll, right?

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Friday, 16 September 2016 07:58 (seven years ago) link

speaking of holograms, I went to this place a week or so ago... still open until the end of September!

Yeah I definitely wasted some pounds on Time Traveller back in the day, mostly in 30 second bursts of "I don't know what the fuck I'm doing"

So y'all got the rest of the week and the weekend. YOU CAN DO THIS IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT.

We're at 16, we got to 20 on the NES-era one, and everyone kept saying "boy I can't wait til the one after this," so get on it y'all!

actually the real threat is that if you don't vote, you don't get to complain about the stupid/boring shit i voted for, which will have outsized influence

ok just voted. This is an era where I'm at least familiar with most of the games, if not played, so I gotta throw in

Vinnie, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:43 (seven years ago) link

though I'm kind of sad Super Bomberman 2 wasn't nommed - pretty much an across-the-board improvement on the original

My vote for Super Bomberman was definitely a vote for #3.

So uh, I guess there will be another Toejam and Earl next year?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laMURYkJO1s

The first one is pretty high up on my ballot, I think I may have even made room for the second, did not play the third one, looked kind of bad. This new one looks like the third one? TJandE with updated graphics, and I guess adult swim's involvement is encouraging, though the 2-D characters on 3-D backgrounds feels less like PaRappa and more like Newgrounds to me.

Mostly worried about the music. There are only 6 or 7 tracks from the first one but they are all brilliant minimalist weirdo chiptune funk songs. I also really don't feel like the first TJandE needs a graphic update but whatever it's 2016 and I am old get off the lawn etc

I dunno how much the music figures into everyone else's ballot, but I mean really, tell me that this isn't exactly what Herbie Hancock circa Headhunters would have come up with if someone had contracted him to score a Genesis game

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Sunday, 25 September 2016 08:30 (seven years ago) link

Voted! Had more Genesis games in my list than SNES, but just looking at the list, if you'd bought both consoles at their release, you'd have felt so much better with a SNES, getting Super Mario World as a pack-in and having access to F-Zero, two of the system's most fun games. Whereas with the Genesis you'd have got Altered Beast and the likes of Flicky and Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (which is about half as good as Miracle World on the SMS).

Wish I'd paid attention to the noms thread, there's a few GG games I'd have definitely evangelised for. Ah well.
