Pretty sure this guy will be in the headlines quite often here on out.

Really disturbing how many Filipinos I come across here in the states support him.

He's a charmer:

Like Hitler, Duterte ‘happy to slaughter’ drug addicts

“Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now there’s three million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them,” Duterte told reporters in his home city of Davao shortly after returning from a visit to Vietnam.

Surprised it took this long for a thread about this dude. Since this summer, his name kept jumping out from fucked up story after fucked up story. Now, on top of basically encouraging genocide, it sounds like he might be instrumental in fucking up the recent South China Sea arbitration? Where do they hatch these creeps?

That link though is to supporters, some of whom note the country's longstanding problems

"Filipino people are also in need of housing, food, education and labor," she says. "If he really wants to help the Filipino people, he needs to broaden the horizons."

Depressing.
I have so many relatives in the Philippines who are on facebook and all seem to love him. Some of them have been posting about him seemingly nonstop for months-and months and months.
At least one of them posts really obviously fake news articles from obviously illegimate sites.
The same person posts a lot of those "say amen" "if you scroll you are heartless!" things.
Also, some of them now post pro-Marcos, anti-Aquino stuff.

one month passes...

Remains to be seen whether Trump actually voiced words of support for this nightmare of a human. If so, god help everyone.

Those photos were horrifying.

I thought last month's New Yorker profile was bad enough. It was like reading an Interview magazine casual chat with Stalin.

Days later, Trump will have a phone call with the Philippine President, who called President Obama the “son of a whore” a few months ago. A readout from the Philippine government subsequently announces that during the call, Trump praised Duterte’s deadly drug crackdown as “the right way.”

idk if that necessarily makes it official though . not that i doubt he would give them the thumbs up

two years pass...

there was an amusing interview with his very tetchy spokesperson on BBC WS the other day where he claimed Duterte was a victim of "cyberbullying"!

The endless victim complex, just like Trump. I would say this narcissistic reflexive defensiveness in these individual leaders is predictable enough that it must make them fairly easy to manipulate for those with the proper skillset. But now that kneejerk narcissism has become definitive for their entire political parties it gets a little hard to separate the individual from the mob.

(I thought the thread revive would be about him claiming he’s retiring from politics, didn’t he already try that once. Apparently he’s still quite popular and if he does retire there’s a good chance his daughter will step up. Horrid people — their clan, not the entire nation! All the folks from the Philippines I’ve met have been pretty awesome.)

some might need a VPN for the bbc interview here where his succession is also discussed and he says Duterte considers his daughter the best candidate but he's "conflicted" about her being exposed "to the ugly face of politics" lol

I went to the Philippines in 2006 with a friend's girlfriend, did not realise I would be spending a week in her house in a shanty town, but it meant that it was a very memorable experience. There was a market openly selling crack just down the road, but also her sister was on the run from the police because she was unable to pay a hospital bill.

Apart from her, I know various Filipinos from living in Ely, somehow we got in with them. All lovely people, and all seem to support this evil monster Duterte.

The endless victim complex, just like Trump. I would say this narcissistic reflexive defensiveness in these individual leaders is predictable enough that it must make them fairly easy to manipulate for those with the proper skillset.

This is taking them at face value tho! They might truly be like that, Trump I'd certainly assume so, but they are also playing into the fascist rulebook, their base needs to be convinced that everyone is against them at all times and that they are the only protection against the traitors within. It registers as narcisism to us but it gets the job done.
