Both dud, really.

I'm pretty paranoid at the best of times so I'm glad I managed to quit when I realised it was having a deleterious effect on my psyche, also making me more forgetful and I was putting on a lot of weight from all the crap I was eating. All the people I know who smoke lots of weed are just boring twats anyway.

Cigs aren't exactly helpful either but I've managed to cut down and only smoke in social situations. So I guess they "win" for me.

When people smoke weed outdoors it stinks up like a 30 foot radius in all directions. When people smoke cigarettes outdoors it just kinda stinks right next to them and not much further.

Weed is fun in small doses. When I smoke/eat it once I imagine a life of languorous days in the woods with a hammock in a perpetual summer. What I end up doing is watching marathons of the Price is Right and eating ice cream bars in my underwear.

Cigarettes suck. I was one of those idiots who picked it up in his late 20s. It's like, "yeah, I really could stand to be more sickly."

As a smoker who quit in 1985, after a dozen years of a pack-a-day habit and a childhood of breathing secondhand smoke, I can state categorically that 1) I am ecstatic that I quit and I expect never to go back to smoking, and 2) non-smokers consistently and badly underestimate the pleasure and usefulness of nicotine and its frequent administration via the world's most popular nicotine-delivery-system (aka 'cigarettes'). Nicotine, used purely as a potent self-administered drug, has subtle and various effects that no other drug can match, even if its psycho-active effects are far from dramatic, like the effects of THC, shrooms or LSD.

It smoothes out rough moods, decreases anxiety, mellows you when you are hyper but allows you to stay awake when necessary, slackens appetite and lessens the need for food. It just has a myriad of small practical applications on a daily basis. It's a shame it also shortens your life by a decade at least, and slowly but surely robs you of breath, stamina and health, even if you avoid cancer or emphysema. not worth it over the long run, but for the first two decades it is like a little miracle drug.

Weed is OK, I guess. I never smoked much better than ditch weed and crappy hashish and it didn't really enhance my life in any memorable way. Even though I used for about five or six years, I have no truly valuable experience with it to draw upon for a sound judgment regarding its benefits or drawbacks.

I'm down to one cigarette a day -- not a stretch, for until 2013 I smoked twice a day -- but I'll be damned if I'll give it up.

weed makes me dissociate and feel paranoid.

aimless otm about cigarettes though. i made an executive decision in college not to pick it up as a regular habit, but from time to time they are very pleasurable, and i dig the alertness and mild euphoria. the smell has positive connotations for me too -- everyone in my extended family smoked when i was a kid and then gave it up at some point in the 90s. so cigarettes remind me of childhood.

I learned a while ago to always pack some American Spirits whenever I travel - one pack for every couple of days I'll be on the road, because I always end up wanting to smoke after a full day of meetings and conference talks and all that jazz, plus everybody else does too and everyone bums off of whomever has a pack, and you all stay up way too late. And bumming off of others sucks, because they might only have some kind of Japanese Marlboro Ultra Lights equivalent and they're terrible.

cigarettes are awful. every time i've taken a pull off a cigarette it feels physically painful in my lungs, i never understood how people can smoke them without their lungs hurting. do others feel this? i have asthma so i assumed it was bc of that. i've tried smoking cigarettes a bunch of times, even smoked them every day for a brief period in college, but even during that period i didn't inhale them bc it hurt too much. i guess i smoked bc it looks cool. i admit that it still does look cool sometimes, but not as a cool as a joint. at this point in my life i feel grateful that i never got addicted. most of my siblings either still smoke or have quit at some point.

i absolutely love weed, it is such a useful drug for me for all kinds of reasons, social interaction, stress relief, creativity, self-reflection, curiosity, thoughtfulness, appreciation of art, nature, food, music. it is the best. i took a break for a number of years in my twenties (mostly bc i didn't have a connect tbh) and started again a few years ago and i am very happy it is back in my life again.

that's interesting, good post. if i could get past my lungs hurting and the nausea that tobacco gives me i could easily see this being the case, i really love those subtle kinds of effects that low-key drugs give you (coffee obviously being one of them - i just watched an interview with moby and someone asks him what his favorite drug is and he says "the high that comes from a really really good cup of coffee" and i dig that

i think one of the worst experiences i've ever had w/ drugs is smoking a joint w/ tobacco & weed mixed. it was awful - the horrible nausea from cigarettes, paranoia from the weed which made me feel like just smoked the most toxic disgusting thing, the enhanced sensory awareness from weed so that the tobacco smoke smell just permeated everything. i think i had to take a shower to feel clean after that experience

marcos, Monday, 24 October 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

btw paranoia from weed, while i don't always get it, is usually a positive thing for me as it manifests as a very motivating kind of anxiety which makes me tune in to all the possibly horrible shit im doing in my life and encourages me to make changes immediately

marcos, Monday, 24 October 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

how much of the 'usefulness' of nicotine is a chicken/egg thing, though? like, maybe it relieves anxiety etc because you're addicted/craving etc

brimstead, Monday, 24 October 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

smoking tobacco is fun as is the buzz of nicotine but cigarettes have a bunch of weird shit in them and taste totally gross. you can smoke a joint in your small one bedroom apartment in the evening and the next day you can't smell it. you smoke a cigarette in same apartment and you will absolutely smell it. you're in a room with cigarette smoke at a party = you will need to wash your hair and probably your clothes in the morning, not so with weed

xxxp - addiction might be part of it, but it's a relatively mild stimulant so it's going to have some effects regardless of that angle, also one reason there seems to be some crossover between ADHD and nicotine.

I wish I could moderate on smoking - one a day or only when drinking, but even if I go with the latter I'll chain smoke an entire pack in three hours and feel like death for three days. Weed is fascinating, but I still don't do it nearly as much as I might like due to social acceptability (if I get a phone call that my store is on fire and show up after a few drinks no one will care, show up stoned and the authorities will care deeply) and because I always feel like I have to have every home and work project wrapped up first because I'm not a functional stoner, I pretty much just melt into a chair and watch Netflix.

Most of my high school and college social circle were cigarette smokers but I never got the hang of it.

Cigarette tobacco smells nice when drying, nice when curing, nice when in the pack. Then someone burns it and it becomes needlessly rank and harsh. But - this is key - cigarette smokers don't know what the smoke smells like to others, because they've become nose-blind to it (the mouth being located directly underneath the nose).

Though I have never smoked an entire cigarette, I like nicotine fine. I and my fellow insufferably pretentious English-major types liked pipes. They offer a mellower olfactory situation, but still have some of the same nose-blindness problems. That is, your perception of the smell of your own smokable is very different from the perception of other people in your life (due to the thing being right next to your goddamn nose).

In contrast, I have always loved weed. It's not a big part of my life right now due to those pesky law things, but I miss it. The main drawback is the gulf between desire and reality, as noted upthread

When I smoke/eat it once I imagine a life of languorous days in the woods with a hammock in a perpetual summer. What I end up doing is watching marathons of the Price is Right and eating ice cream bars in my underwear.

Yeah, when I am high I feel like I should make the most of it: adventure, creative endeavor, sex, sybaritic pleasure, luxury, extreme relaxation. But this anxiety to make it a Good Drug Experience is itself really counterproductive because whatever I manage to do, I feel like there's something better I should be doing instead. The result is paralysis in some stupid pointless loop.

Maybe - I'd say it depends on your tolerance/level of practice. At times I've been super drunk and had people tell me they couldn't tell a difference, much less 3-4 drinks (pretty much my max these days) - I've never found that level with weed. I either don't notice it at all or I'm baked but I've had a lot more practice functioning while drinking, I'm sure if it were more social for me I'd adapt/build a tolerance.

Neanderthal, Monday, 24 October 2016 22:36 (seven years ago) link

I like to think I have pretty good buzz maintenance skillz. I can generally incorporate three drinks into an evening where I need to keep my wits about me (like a date or work function), and stop before things get troublesome. Beer and wine (by nature of their volume) can slow the progression down, compared to hard drinks. When drinking vodka (for example), one can accidentally speed past the mild-buzz stage, going straight from sober to puking-on-the-hostess without having that pleasantly-buzzed stage in between.

In my youth (early 90s), I could take two or three hits from a bowl/joint, or one bong hit, then still do stuff like play music in a club setting. Much more than that, and I might have been inappropriately giggling in a corner about the inherent funniness of dryer lint. Nowadays, I know that potency requires a different calculation. I fear I'd blow way past the mild-buzz and dryer-lint stages, and end up ping-ponging between terror, masturbation, and sleep.

Always find that while a joint doesn't have the instant deep impact of a bong hit, over time it delivers the longer lasting and more satisfying smoke.

Also, as an ex-smoker I still like sucking on a little tube of pleasure.

best way to smoke is to fill up a chamber thick with smoke, soak two long strings (thin ropes work too) in it for 2 minutes, tie up the smoky strings tautly across the room, *pluck* the strings so you can see them oscillate (strobe lights help) and then run under the vibrating strings, catching a perfect whiff as you pass by

one thing about a joint is if you can roll a nice tight one that draws easy you feel kinda cool. or maybe -you- don't, idk, but back when I was a cigarette smoker who sometimes rolled his own, I liked the "nice!" response if several of us would be sitting around and the question 'can anybody roll joints?' would come up. rolling up a doob and smoking it...it's just a different vibe

Joints always give me a throwback, drinking-shitty-beer-out-of-cans, high school party sort of feeling which is great but they're impractical for solo use. They're smelly and and an entire one of 20%+ THC weed would totally cripple me. The pre-rolls at the stores are always 1 gram apiece and it usually takes me 2 weeks or so to go through a that much in my normal use.

Was cooking dinner the other night, annoyed about the pungent aroma of the weed that my son has been bongripping in the garage, when I accidentally spilled some oregano on the stove burner. I was like "Yes! This is what weed should smell like!" We need weed that has been stepped on with kitchen spices again.

I'm lucky I never got into cigs. feel like I should've at some point because pretty much all my friends smoke. it was pretty obnoxious that they'd all go out for a smoke break every hour and I'd just be left inside sitting on my hands. eventually I started going out with them and smoking some myself but I never liked it. I tell myself I don't do it for health reasons, or because I hate smelling like smoke (especially being married to a non-smoker), or because it fucking sucks having to constantly go outside when you live in a state where it's cold 7 months out of the year, but the reality is I never caught anything more than a mild buzz off it

weed was kinda the same thing for a while because we got that cheap shit that high schoolers get, which maybe was actually cut with spices and brillo pads. I remember rolling really awful Js and then spending the next 2 hours thinking "am I high yet?". all I remember is getting a little freaked out by the Simpsons. then we got some actual decent weed and it changed everything. 15 minutes in I'm physically unable to stop headbanging to "Mother Sky" by Can and I'm just like...hmmm...now I get it. it's nice. I still try to do more edibles for the sake of my lungs though. I don't really like that feeling that you've burned the back of your throat or the pipes that lead to your ears.

I have never successfully smoked a cigarette. Just can't.

For a while I lived in Richmond, Virginia, a tobacco-centric city, surrounded by smokers... I love the smell of drying tobacco.

Every few years I would buy a pack of unfiltered Camels out of love for the design and for the smell when freshly opened pack of Camels.

Burning them, though... the smoker quickly gets nose-blind to the smell and it's infinitely worse when burning than before.

As a silly English major I smoked a pipe for a while - nose-blindedness is a problem there too. Pipe tobacco can be quite nice but the smoker doesn't smell it in the same way as a nonsmoker does. These dynamics get glossed over but to me they are important factors.

I have smoked plenty of weed but prefer gummies these days.

i'm in brooklyn for the first time since legalization. i hadn't really fully clocked that you can legally smoke weed anywhere it's legal to smoke tobacco. the smell of weed is eeeeverywhere. people just toking out in front of the police station. it is absolutely wild. can very easily imagine people going to the airport and forgetting they have a joint in their backpack. you know, people that are not me

i'm a little suspect of your average bodega weed, but i like that it's possible to buy weed at any time pretty much anywhere now. smell of brooklyn in the summer is very much weed + match light charcoal.

Ohare has "cannabis amnesty" boxes for folks who wind up at the airport with an overlooked spliff in their pocket...

And they are INSIDE security…

Tracer Hand, Monday, 24 April 2023 21:43 (one year ago) link

I have seen those, and pretty much just assume that it's a rotating privilege among security and TSA staff to "safely dispose" of the contents of the amnesty boxes.

Friday night! Let's see what bounty we have in the amnesty box!

...that thought did cross my mind..

A rather more daring, slightly more ACAB-minded person than myself might consider testing this hypothesis by putting some drug-like substances in there, but with decidedly unsavory ingredients.

Here you go, O'Hare cops! Enjoy this dime bag of oregano and rat poison!

Oh hey, what's this that I just discovered in my luggage? Could it be a half a cup of dried basil mixed with a tablespoon of fentanyl? I dunno. I guess you'd better check!

(Preemptively denouncing myself for even having these sinister thoughts; I'll show myself out.)

My understanding (gleaned through conversations with Phish heads, so maybe find secondary confirmation) is that the TSA don't realy care about weed anymore, although local police in the city you're flying into might, and carrying it over international borders is, of course, bad.

I suspect with more and more states going legal it would probably cripple an airport to try do deal with small amounts of weed

xp to peace, man: when I crave solid, actionable information about the state of American law enforcement and jurisprudence, I always look to my favorite jam-band forums.

I probably would have known nothing about the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 2016, were it not for my bros on the DMBfanz board. Those dudes totally helped me understand both the controversial fiscal policy of quantitative easing, AND the awesomeness of the bassline of "Ants Marching."

My DMB-adjacent homies have so far been quiet about the intricacies of cannabis enforcement in major US airports, but that's probably because Chad is taking a nap and the rest of the guys are out playing Ultimate in the quad.

And ums otm, I'm sure 85% of the time they don't want to have to parse the complexities of whether you're flying from a legal jurisdiction to an illegal one or vice versa.
