Bogart apparently isn't being published anymore, and doesn't seem to even have a wikipedia page?

Write in for "Bucky Katt" from Get Fuzzy, whose greatest goal in life is to eat a monkey.

I think there was a cat in that old Calvin strip. What's the name, what's the name, it's right on the tip of my tongue...Albert, maybe?

I forgot to include "Cat", the cat from Peter Blegvad's Leviathan:

I don't know if there was ever a recurring character that would be eligible for this poll, but Steven Appleby does some of the best newspaper cartoon strip cats imo

Fat Freddy's Cat first appeared in 1969 in underground newspapers as a character in The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers strip. He soon gained his own small spin-off topper strip, in imitation of the early Krazy Kat strips below The Family Upstairs by George Herriman.

What about Hobbes? Ain't tigers cats too?

Oh, I see someone brought that up already...

Tuomas, Wednesday, 26 October 2016 09:05 (seven years ago) link

poll is for Felis catus/Felis silvestris catus only, Hobbes does not count. I considered including Fat Freddy's Cat but I thought he only appeared in comix rather than newspapers per se, but yeah I suppose "underground newspapers" are a grey area.

Krazy Kat, without question.

I think the problem with cats in any media is that actual cats are readily available and far more meaningful IRL than when instanced by technology, be that pen, camera or prose.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 October 2016 03:29 (seven years ago) link

I can look at my cat right now, hidden in darkness, asleep, and he's already funnier and more important than all of the nominees in this poll.
Never draw a cat. If you must put a cat on film, know that is all about your temporary fascination, not about cats.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 October 2016 03:36 (seven years ago) link

Are you suggesting that Samurai Pizza Cats isn't deeply meaningful?

jmm, Thursday, 27 October 2016 03:42 (seven years ago) link

it might be but not as much as Mark Roger's Samurai Cat - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Cat

and in any case I can just look at a real cat, think about what the real cat would do in some kind of space-galactic 47 Ronin x LOTR time travel parody situation, and it's endless fun. Real cats - watch 'em.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 October 2016 04:06 (seven years ago) link

hobbes of course doesn't count -- he's either a stuffed tiger or a djinn-like magical shapeshifter, either way not a cat.

cliff sterrett drew a "topper" strip for polly and her pals (similar to sappo and thimble theater) called dot and dash, about a cat and dog, which i think was prob a big influence on mutts:

Οὖτις, Thursday, 27 October 2016 04:50 (seven years ago) link

it's kind of an unfair contest since almost all of the other strips (excepting mutts, which is pretty good, and le chat and bogart which i'm not familiar with) are terrible.

(why) has achewood never been serialised

delighted here by the notion that LJ somehow managed to order hand-made paperbacks from Onstad a dozen or so times over five years without ever clicking onto the front page of the site and discovering the strips appearing there

pretty sure he meant that as "serialized in print," making it eligible for the thread title

good result

I'm watching Pulp Fiction right now. I never noticed before that Samuel L. Jackson gets a Krazy Kat shirt from Quentin Tarantino after they clean up the dead body in the car.

Going to put this on the Fat Freddy's Cat thread too - sorry if this is a gross breach of etiquette.

the paperbacks were printed iirc

(there are very many structural, content, and business-model-related reasons that they were not in newspapers, but that's not what he asked / amused me two years ago)
