the SC nominee is a distraction?

How the SC nominee is being rolled out, specifically.

On rollerskates?

I'm hoping this one would stall in the senate, right? But then Trump would just make it an EO

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 00:10 (seven years ago) link

yeah Republicans are in kind of a shitty spot. I'm sure a lot of them want to speak up (and privately I would imagine nearly all of them think he's absolutely nuts) but being one of the first to do so is a big risk

They were in a good spot to denounce him three months ago when he could have been defeated. It is insane that these people think they won the presidency. Trump has never shown anything but contempt for the congressional Republicans.

Treeship, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 00:15 (seven years ago) link

I hope they are happy with frog nazi Bannon as the de facto president.

Treeship, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

They deserve all the ignominy they get once this charade falls apart. Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later.

Treeship, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 00:19 (seven years ago) link

nothing about the SCOTUS rollout is a distraction. this is what it's all about

one thing that would be funny would be if the media scooped trump'a pick and he got mad and changed to the (slightly) more acceptable guy

k3vin k., Wednesday, 1 February 2017 00:38 (seven years ago) link

the charade's going to fall apart? When?

wonder if gorsuch will manage to live up to the legend of his wonderful mother

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:16 (seven years ago) link

He attended Harvard Law with former President Barack Obama. On Tuesday, Obama's former ethics czar, Norm Eisen, another classmate, tweeted: "Hearing rumors Trump's likely Supreme Court pick is Neil Gorsuch, my (and President Obama's!) 1991 Harvard Law classmate. If so, a great guy!"

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:23 (seven years ago) link

Alberto Gonzales is on the NPR Trumpocalypse show right now, and this guy's OK with Fredo. (Gorsuch, not Moe Greene)

Legal affairs droner Jamie Floyd is going on at length how Gorsuch is "genteel, collegial" compared to his "fiery" crooked mother, which is why i don't give WNYC money any more.

so, wait, is this the first sane thing trump has done?

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:35 (seven years ago) link

? are you an originalist, scott?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:45 (seven years ago) link

I'm sure he means that he nominated Gorsuch to SCOTUS and not, say, Jared Kushner.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:48 (seven years ago) link

yeah, i'm not saying that this judge isn't...whatever he is, but he's not like a total kook or something. i could see some Dems not hating him. he's not gonna get people rioting in the streets.

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:49 (seven years ago) link

at least when he votes to uphold the USA PATRIOT Acts (I & II et al) it'll be just like Obama's on the Court

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:50 (seven years ago) link

he's not gonna get people rioting in the streets.

yeah, that's true. he is fucking terrible, though, and compared to what should have occurred - garland getting ready to celebrate his 1-year anniversary as a sitting supreme court justice - it's a shameful outrage. feelings of relief at his nomination are a sign of normalization of trump's terrible decisions

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:51 (seven years ago) link

it is kinda shocking that trump actually picked somebody i could imagine almost any republican president picking, like an actual person with experience and a resume, instead of picking some wacko lobbyist who tweets a lot

otoh that is a pretty low bar to set; originalism is a p deranged legal philosophy

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:52 (seven years ago) link

the guy's a fucking idiot nutjob???? JFC

what am I reading? where are you people receiving transmissions?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:54 (seven years ago) link

originalism is a p deranged legal philosophy

mainly because it was devised to deliver a preordained result, not because it had any other merits to recommend it.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:55 (seven years ago) link

I mean come on Norm Eisen is a meaningless nobody

this dude is a pro-religion psychopath

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 01:56 (seven years ago) link

what do you expect man

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 02:04 (seven years ago) link

i mean there is no end to choose from there. and this guy ain't scalia-level satanic.

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 02:06 (seven years ago) link

k3vin I am reacting against the "this guy is practically a moderate choice" which is not the case
he's totally going to be scalia-level insane if he gets on the bench

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 02:07 (seven years ago) link

he talks bonkers nonsense and his record is horrifying

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 02:07 (seven years ago) link

feelings of relief at his nomination are a sign of normalization of trump's terrible decisions

― Karl Malone

this is very OTM, Gorsuch is a dangerous lunatic who only looks good when compared to even more dangerous lunatics.

sleeve, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 02:10 (seven years ago) link

That sounds pretty normal to me, relative to the GOP.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 02:10 (seven years ago) link
