It doesn't work.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe I need to use MORE cheese? Anyone else ever try this?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

are you actually trying to fry the cheese itself with no outer covering?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think it's meant to be deep fried with some sort of breading

ron (ron), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

plus the whole concept of deep fried cheese is disturbing

ron (ron), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

But, mozerella sticks!!!!

lyra (lyra), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

it needs to be a particular sort of cheese

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

ron (ron), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Heidi and her Grandad were pertually eating toasted cheese (? similar to fried cheese) and I have never understood how they got it to stay on the toasting forks.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 18 November 2002 03:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

perpetually. Sorry.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 18 November 2002 03:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Saganaki, bitches. OPA!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 18 November 2002 03:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fried cheese ought to be great, I've always thought. I love fried stuff. I love cheese. But, as Andrew says, put the two together and it doesn't work. It makes me feel ill.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

When we tried it the cheese just sizzled a bit then disappeared.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

you need to get a fry daddy

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Applebees carries this delicacy. I think it works alright. Whereas a rack of boneless ribs does not.

Aaron A., Monday, 18 November 2002 04:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

a fried golden crumby circle of camembert is one of my favourite foods

spectra, Monday, 18 November 2002 04:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of course we tried it w/little bits of GRATED cheese which wasn't a good idea at all. Frying stuff's fun. That camembert sounds delicious.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

SMAZENY SYR=WONDERFUL.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 18 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hard cheeses can fry pretty well like certain types of Greek cheese or Indian Paneer. Very tasty indeed.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 18 November 2002 11:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

coating and freezing the cheese prior to frying works, particularly with runny cheeses like brie, camembert, and mozzarella. Eaten with a red fruit jus such as cranberry or red berry.

mmmmnnnnnn

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 18 November 2002 12:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haloumi is the greek cheese I'm thinking of - its actually generally served fried - very tasty. Get it today.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 18 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Paneer (Indian cheese made from milk and lemon juice) is cut in cubes, fried in spiced ghee, then added to sauce (usually twinned with peas or spinach). It's amazing.

You can also deep fry basic cheese curds or cheddar and dip them in barbecue sauce or ketchup. The brown, fried outer cheese acts as a coating for the goo inside.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 18 November 2002 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

fried cheese doesn't work?? are you kidding? it solves international conflicts and spans rivers!

oh wait you used grated cheese, yeah that's a problem.

also nummy: goat cheese covered in pine nuts, then heated until it's just melty enough. yum.

maura (maura), Monday, 18 November 2002 19:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

chaki (chaki), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Deep fried camembert or brie with cranberry sauce = one of the best foods ever. Or with quince. Delish.

Cheese is dipped in plain flour, then egg, then bread crumbs before being fried.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 11:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Not really related: I used to work in a restaurant that served deep-fried ice-cream!)

Miss Laura, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 12:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

A whole camembert under the grill until it starts to wobble in a waterbed style is scrummy. Break open the top and dip chips in for a heart attack special.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lordy, Madchen, that Glasgow lifestyle is really starting to kick in, isn't it?

There's a fab caff in Bologna near the Archiginnasio that does wonderful cheese croquettes. Lard-u-like.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

And we've forgotten panzerotti - big beignets of mozzarella and tomato inside thin bread coating. Only available at Luini's in Milan...and Theobald's Road.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

And those lovely little rice balls with mozzarella in the middle...

haloumi!!!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Methinks that Madchen's recipe = URGENT AND KEY!!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

They also do the rice mozzarella balls at Luini, I think.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

They do them at Carluccio's cafe behind Oxford Circus, but not very well.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lordy, Madchen, that Glasgow lifestyle is really starting to kick in, isn't it?

No, just the typical up-market Woking approach to chips'n'cheese.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yay Mooro! Your typical deep-fried-mars-bar-eating Glasgow ned would probably think Camembert was an STD.

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mozarella sticks yum, camembert yum - cheese on toast made with a scottish plain loaf is the best :)

Yeah, plain bread makes the best toast on the planet. Fuzzy - Plain bread pieces'n square sausage...hmmmm....

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 4 March 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

Only the truly sick hate cheese.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 4 March 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think ally C could disagree.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 4 March 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

I certainly couldn't.

-- suzy (theartskooldisk...), November 19th, 2002 7:22 AM.

I'd forgotten all about panzerotti! There was a greasy little place near my high school that had them, and my fellow pom pom girls and I used to scarf them before football games. Just thinking about them just made me get leftover pizza from my refrigerator for breakfast, as that's the closest I can get right now.
Also, anyone who feels ill from fried cheese has clearly eaten too much of it. You're not supposed to eat a whole BOWL of cheese curds or anything. Sometimes, you just have to hold the fried cheese to your nose and take a good whiff, and that's enough.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago) link

Kirsten, you should be able to make them or get beignets as an emergency substitute.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

Oh man, if I could make panzerotti I would never leave my apartment.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:10 (twenty years ago) link

Hmmmm.... Panzerotti... I've had some 2 weeks ago with some arugola stuffed inside for extra goodness...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone who tried wouldn't be able to squeeze out leave their apartment.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago) link

Right this has me convinced. Who's with me for a trip to that Canadian boozer off the Strand for POUTINE (?youknowchipsandgravyandcheese) somtime um perhaps next week?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago) link

Ha! jus. Tut tut.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

I have reproached Vicky firmly but fairly for her heinosity

chris (chris), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:44 (twenty years ago) link

Paneer!

There's a tandoori place near me that does paneer in the oven (it's a little lighter this way)... they serve it in chunks that are the size of Rubik's Cubes! Delicious.
