for a long long time I used to shave my facial hair into a goatee-mustache combo and was convinced it looked good. then I started shaving my entire face at a girlfriend's behest, and hey, that looked ok, too. now I bascially go to the barber once a month and have them do the whole straight-razor thing (fellaz lemme tell ya unless yr averse to the light ever reaching yr jawline it's BREATHTAKING even w/o the facial massage! nyc hot hint: the barbers on 8th & st. marks near kim's are faboo-godlike and you should tip 'em well when they're done like i do < /whatever that character on Andy Griffith's name I can't remember is>) and then go five-six weeks just growing and growing it out. AND IT FUCKING ROCKS! now that we've got snow here in nyc we need all the protection we can get against the evil, evil elements (well i'm from the very cold midwest so I can handle certain things better than other cough cough < /wiggling eyebrows>) and plus it makes me actually look like a fucking adult for once. yay!

holy mother of god am i high right now

Hah yeh...I had a beard in high school for a bit..half of the class liked it, the other half hated it...kind of fun...and I went as Billy Gibbons/Jim Morrison/Jim Carrey for Halloween so i looked kind of like Jody's picture. I think I'll grow a beard again...oh by the way the barber's name is Floyd.

I just shaved off my beard this morning, but there is certainly plenty of evidence of my beardedness from the past week, and you know, for a while there, I looked fucking hot.

(And scarily enough, I look fucking hot in one of those Glenn Hughes dealies too, as I noticed before I shaved the rest off this morning.... I think I was meant to put facial hair to use... but alas, me smooth again)

I haven't shaved in a week. I only shaved for the FAP. I am due for a haircut, and I will get a straight-razor shave with it. Beards itch too much for me.

In borading school, we had a dress code, and we were required to be clean-shaven. I was always in the process of seeing how long I could grow my sideburns before someone would complain. I had some bad muttonchops for a day before I drew the wrath of the administration.

I had my every-four-years desire to grow a beard six months ago and it's still going. Nothing has been trimmed at all other than my moustache to keep hairs outta my mouth.

trying one on for the first time. looks awful so far but give it time, navy-style:

Beards: Navy personnel who wish to grow full beards shall request permission in writing to discontinue shaving from their Commanding Officer/Commandant. In arriving at a decision, the Commanding Officer/Commandant shall take into account the ability of the individual to grow a beard, in addition to other service requirements. When permission has been granted, the member shall:

1. be issued with written authority to discontinue shaving;
2. not appear in public in uniform until the Commanding Officer/Commandant has approved the beard. When traveling between residence and place of duty, member shall be in civilian clothes regardless of the method of travel;
3. within 30 days of permission being granted to discontinue shaving, appear before his Commanding Officer or delegated authority for an assessment of acceptability of the beard for wear with CF uniform in public; if the beard is unsatisfactory, permission to discontinue shaving shall be rescinded; and
4. retain the beard for a minimum of 12 months and get a new military identification.

anyone care to recommend a good beard trimmer for under, say, $45?

i'm enjoying having a seven-day beard, but i really need to clean it up around the neck. but i don't want to use a razor, i sort of want it to fade out rather than having a neat line between beard and shaved area. i also sort of want the beard to look a little messy, not neat like leonard maltin.

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

just man up & use scissors.

(sez the guy with the my-first-beard scraggle look)

Joint Custody (ian), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

but i can't really clean up my neck with scissors! if i use a razor, it's impossible to do anything but have a clearly demarcated line between the shaved and bearded portion of the face/neck. but if i use scissors i can never clean up the short hairs on the neck! unless i went hair by hair and took four hours shaving every morning!

or am i missing something?

actually, if there is a good book about keeping a scraggly beard then i would buy it.

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:12 (fourteen years ago) link

part of the problem is that my hair just grows really far down on my neck when i let it--like to the adam's apple and beyond.

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link

hm, yeah, my neckbeard is semi-manageable.

Joint Custody (ian), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe i should just shave the face and leave the neck nice and lush?

I got one of the Norelco beard-trimmers as a Christmas gift a few years ago. It was awesome for the three times I used it but I eventually went back to using my Oster clippers with a #1 guard.

untrue dude, if you run a sharp razor very lightly over the beard without pressing you can thin down a layer no problem.

gotta say i kinda miss shaving, i liked the ritual and process of it.

For serious. When it's warmer, I'll buzz it down to a barely-perceptible stubble, but I haven't for-real shaved my face in years. Hate it.
