Friday Afternoon Disease

It is Friday Afternoon. I am bored. I am bored out of my mind, and seeking distraction- ANY sort of distraction- that the internet can offer. Please, post anything- it doesn't have to make sense or be funny- I just need to have some INPUT before my brain turns to jelly.

HELP ME!!! PLEEEEEAAAAAASE!!!

My Shopping List

1. 6 Pack Kronenberg 2. Burgundy Kettle Chips 3. Tiger Prawns 4. Pizza 5. Toilet Paper 6. Evening Standard

scott, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mmmmmmm, kettle chips!!! Not a bad flavour yet, even when they start getting into dodgey flavours like "port and blue stilton". Yum. And Pizza... me, too! Pizza is definitely a Friday Afternoon ritual- I have no idea if this is a carry-over from Catholic school where they served pizza cause you weren't allowed to eat meat on Fridays, but Friday=Pizza for me. Quattro Fromage from Sainsburys.

Yay, I feel slightly less bored now.

What I've eaten and drunk today:

1 cup water 1 glass milk 2 cans coke 1 packet of peanut M & Ms 1 banana

Driving through London yesterday, the divine LC got all excited about seeing Cleopatra's Needle - she likes the sphinxes, you see. But I on the other hand was reminded about how stupid the damn thing is - it's not Cleopatra's! It was around hundreds of years before she was! Like, duh.

DG, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

what i've drank today:
nestea "brisk" iced tea

what i plan on eating shortly:
a pack of starbursts.

what i need to take:
an anti-inflammatory pill.

what i need to do:
call the doctor.

I have had a cup of coffee today and three cigarettes. Last night I was drinking vodka and tonic and now I'm feeling it a tiny bit, but I think I"m feeling the lack of sleep more. Waking up at 6am is a total dud.

Ally, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I.M.somewhat pissed

mark s, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Damn! The one thing I didn't ask my Dr was: WHEN CAN I DRINK AGAIN?!?!??! I'm assuming it's that same 7 to 10 days thingey as everything else, which means I can imbibe at Strange Fruit tomorrow! Or is that bloody foolhardy and stupid?

I like the fact that London is so full of monuments. Not just Cleopatra's needle, but the idea that there really IS a monument at Monument. Oh, and there's monuments every few blocks down sarf here, commemerating where people used to have wells until the Victorians bricked them over so kids and dogs wouldn't fall down them.

Or, erm something.

I think I'm going to have some Bombay Chewra Mix now. Yum!

masonic boom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ally - take it from a former alcho, the vodka and tonic is a bad way to earn a hangover. Switch to straight double v's and you'll feel fine the next year.

Geoff, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love the arrogance of naming a monument The Monument, too, like there would never be any other better ones (especially given how modest The Monument is).

Tom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love the arrogance of naming a monument The Monument, too, like there would never be any other better ones (especially given how modest The Monument is).

Unless of course they pre-emptively named it after the Ultravox album (Tube stations and pop! Marcello, do your worst!)

Tom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Aw, hope you feel better fred (not meant sarcastically!).

What I have drank today: 4 glasses of water. What I have ate: Toast, and technically also antiobiotics, though it's not like I'm actually chewing them or enjoying the taste.

Nicole, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Man, I switched from Tequila and Rum to Vodka to avoid the hangovers, and now you're telling me even Vodka and Tonic will give you a hangoer? Sheesh! My drink of choice was, however, the double vodka and coke, in a vain attempt to try and taste the alcohol. Why is it any alcohol you can taste will automatically make the hangover bad?

And The Monument... I mean, it's not even as big as Nelson's needle thing on Trafalgar Square, is it? Or was this another thread... there's a monument at Monument. There's an embankment at Embankment. There's a swiss cottage at Swiss Cottage. Now where is my Tooting Bec? I even dreamed about the Tube last night, trying to find a station called "Bec" or "Beck" or "Bac" on the Jubilee Line Extension. All mixed up with Life Without Buildings making me take them to a really, really expensive dinner at a posh restaurant and making me pay.

THIS BOARD HAS TAKEN OVER MY SUBCONSCIOUS!!! HELP!!!!

masonic boom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can't stand V+C because it tastes like coke with added straight alcohol. I mean, what is the point of wussy mixed drinks if they end up tasting more of industrial ethanol than the stuff you put in them? You might as well just drink the stuff straight.

If you really want an alcoholic drink w/no alcoholic taste may I be so bold as to recommend the apparently now rather naff sea breeze? Even the 1:1:1 Cranberry/Grapefruit/Vodka versions as mixed by my own good hand taste perfectly benign.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The coke in my double vodka and cokes is to SLOW ME DOWN!!! You have seen me necking straight vodka out the bottle behind the decks at Strange Fruit enough to know that I do this. My request for vodka drinks is *NOT* to escape the taste of alkyhol, which I lurve, but to escape the horrible hangovers that darker alcohols produce in me. I want to make vodka taste MORE like alcohol, not less.

what i et so far: ordinary pret breakfast (sandwich [= port salut, cress + pinefox i mean pinenuts]; almond croissant; double- strength cap.

Coffee at 11, coffee at 12, coffee at 1, office friday-binge chardonnay at 3

supper: finish off home-made salmagundy = totally fantastic even if i did forget the chives

mark s, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Every day is pizza day for me, not just Friday. They give me chronic heartburn though. It got so bad that I was gonna stop eating them but then, after consulting an online pharmacopoeia, I managed to persuade my doctor to put me on pantoprazole, which suppresses acid production in the stomach. I'll need to take it daily for life - but now I can eat as many pizzas and as much spicy food as I want!

scott, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEEEEEEEE aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh... another thing that I will now be able to indulge in again! Oh, but I'm scared. This is the first time in... 15 years that I've actually managed to get myself to the point where I can survive a day with NO caffeine at all... it's more addictive than heroin, apparently. Do I really want to slip back into the habit?

Oh, you bet I do. It's a bit late now, but tomorrow! I will INDULGE!!! And probably be back in hospital within the week...

Pizza every day, my god, that is admirable. I used to have pizza for BREAKFAST every morning when I was about 20, but had to stop because it was killing me. My only question is, with acid production in your stomach stopped, how the heck do you digest your food? Surely that places undue strain on the rest of your colon?

masonic boom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'reduces' would have been a better word than 'suppresses'

mark s, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sorry Kate, my bad. I somehow mentally inserted a 'not' in between 'try and' and 'taste'. It did seem a bit odd that you wanted to escape the grate taste of BOUZE(which != the taste of ethanol, hence sea breeze recommendation), but it kind of fitted with your statement that all alcohol flavoured drinks give you hangovers.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That said, I'm here at work and I am bored out of my skull completely. I've done all I can, and I'm watching the second hand on my watch go around. There are even fewer forms of recreation when you have to look like you're working as well... Ugh.

Paul Strange, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

BOUZE is an odd word cos it's Molesworthian but also a neologism. Any of our indie slang etymologists on the case? Carsmile? Nick?

Tom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

How does one distinguish between Molesworthian and internet slang, and even "ghetto speak" or [sorry] Ebonics? I don't understand sometimes what comes from where.

I mean cool spelled KEWL is clearly not Molesworthian coz I learned it from American white trash. As does ROOLZ or anything with a Z.

I love etymology (that is the study of wurds, and not bugz, right?) but what does one do when confronted with all this?

masonic boom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I first used the term in Preston, co-joined with the word "shandy". SHANDY-BOUZE! You goin' out, drinking the shandy-bouze? TRES BON! Also has been found in Manchester.

Over the years it has come to mean any BOOZE. Booze sounds rather sleazy. BOUZE is much nicer and rounder and fuzzy. And we like the fuzzy BOUZE effect. We do... fancy a pint anyone?

sarah, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I need bouze right about now. This afternoon is the most boring on record, I literally have nothing to do.

Nicole, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A (possibly) Irish variant of BOUZE, as introduced to me by my lovely friend Joss in a Glasgow pub last Sunday morning, namely using it in the singular: "Trousers, me ole mate, do you fancy a BOUZE?" (ie a pint).

stevie t, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bouze = the stuff; a bouze = the activity, no?

mark s, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm going to have plenty of bouze tonight.

Yeah, I hate that. BOOZE. BOOZE. BOOZE. It just looks better.

Ally, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, that was my theory, but my Dublin friends put me straight: A BOUZE = one pint(or g&t or irn bru & vodka or whatever).

discovered open-air swimming pool 30 minutes walk away on map(just lost brand new bike to thieves). listen to mates warp/skam etc mix- cd on the way, lose my direction and walk 2 km past the thing. find it, no lockers, male/female dressing 'areas' open with no walls between them (discover this when woman opposite undresses). Big pool, almost empty, sun unexpectantly streams from amongst grey clouds, swim slowly (+ badly). love it.

Job: Lame-duck, earning a fair share of $$$ to search for a NEW job while my current company (a non-profit org) slowly disintegrates. And, actually, with Monster.com, I don't have to even LOOK for a job! (Well, you know.)

Food: 3/4ths of a Monte Cristo & some french fries (left over from last night's meal out); a raspberry-flavored hard-candy; a slice of tomato from a tomato & basil salad (quite tasty); orange soda (1 glass); 2 caffeine-free Cokes; water; a butterscotch.

A Monte Cristo is a FRIED SANDWICH. How ridiculous is that? Ham, turkey, two types of cheese, on wheat bread (at least, this one was), FRIED. Dusted with powder sugar, served with jelly. Comprises 2000% of my daily caloric intake. Oddly delectible.

I still have a headache from last night, and I just got the dahl going on the stove so I think I might go to the shops find some more of this 'Bouze' thing everyone's talking about. Incidentally, this time last week I met Paul Heaton in the shop, he said he was recording a solo album, then bought an egg sandwich.

Dude, you're getting gypped. A Monte Cristo is what you say, but served on french toast with maple syrup, mustard optional, pickles on the side. I order them all the time, they're great.
