even my rub resistance levels were stretched by this slice of everyday NY life

But that "Me and my Beatbox" song was very neet-o.

fletrejet, Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, I didn't even think this movie actually existed so you've blown my mind.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Me and my best friend in high school went to see this several times back in the day. How we loved it!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Me and My Rhythm Box Girl is totally based on me.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, my friend David appears in the film as "the designer's boyfriend" aka the guy from Detroit. He told me the actress who plays the rhythm box girl died in a plane crash a few years later. It's a terrible movie, but it does remind me of a certain faction of NY Nightlife back then. Plus the soundtrack's great.

I don't think that's true? I think she just dropped out of acting.

this is the best fucken movie. BFI last night, in raptures. so fucking funny and sly in its observations on fashion, sexism, counterculture & hedonism. so transgressive it transgresses transgression, challenges the very nature of the queer challenge to society from within. two lead actors are flat-out astounding. paula e sheppard would steal almost any other movie completely, but anne carlisle is just...well, by the end, literally out of this world. such a beautiful fucking film. and oh god the way MUSIC is used - so grimy, so wonky, so completely unsettling! the editing too - crosscutting scenes with gleeful and jarring intensity! the deliberate use of wooden acting by peripheral characters! the electrifyingly desperate ambience, the fact it could have ended perfectly about 4 times but kept going, kept spinning further out of control...call this a b-movie sure, but it's also a masterpiece

]so transgressive it transgresses transgression

I've noticed previously that you're keen on this word.

For example:

maybe take it to 'too much time on ilx'? more americans there, they'll appreciate your transgressive exposé

Hey - just noting it out of compassion that, as you are apparently an aspiring novelist, your vocabulary might need some enhancement.

lol I sure thought this movie was outre when I was 16.

The entire electroclash genre is a comment on this film. Sometimes explicit.

I saw it in the ICA sometime in the 80s. Possibly before a band played there.
Really is pretty other innit?

It's crazy

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Saturday, 29 July 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

I dunno if it's a generational thing, or if it's just that the subject hadn't come up in the past, but I'm seeing people now (young ppl) who think this movie is "good". ... like in the past, there was just the split between "so bad it's good" and "no, it's just bad." ... now there are people who don't perceive a camp factor, or ... dunno how best to articulate it. It's kinda a 1980s "Bucket of Blood," but if people were to take seriously its portrayals of beatniks and the 50s avant-garde.

sarahell, Sunday, 30 July 2017 00:12 (six years ago) link

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 30 July 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link

Honestly, Bucket of Blood is more enjoyable to watch than Liquid Sky

sarahell, Sunday, 30 July 2017 01:40 (six years ago) link

Hated it the first time I saw it (on VHS); loved it the second time I saw it (on the big screen, with Anne Carlisle making as surprise appearance after the screening)

Josefa, Sunday, 30 July 2017 02:36 (six years ago) link

I think I established a reputation with a couple of screenings in my dormitory basement media room in the very early 90s. My fellow viewers were transfixed, but I'm not sure the impression was for the better.

I have the DVD. Can't imagine any tangible improvement from a restoration.

"Me and My Rhythm Box" was covered by Adult. as Phoenecia - Odd Job (Adult.'s Compurhythm Version) in 1999. Obviously, the short lived electroclash genre is 100% a homage to this movie.

'How To Talk To Girls At Parties' - seems like someone has, at long last, decided to follow up Liquid Sky :D

well, a sort of Liquid Sky/Under The Skin crossover idk it's exciting

imago, Friday, 20 April 2018 20:55 (six years ago) link

ARGH just saw Neil Gaiman's name on the poster ABORT

(or, wait for the reviews)

imago, Friday, 20 April 2018 21:04 (six years ago) link

I liked the Gaiman story, it’s funny and low-key and probably doesn’t have much in common with the movie.

JoeStork, Friday, 20 April 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

Worth noting, the Liquid Sky Blu-ray "newly restored in 4k from its original 35mm camera negative" with new Slava Tsukerman commentary track, is out April 24 from xyzsploitation specialist Vinegar Syndrome.

Doctor Casϵϵno (Doctor Casino), Monday, 20 August 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

btw to the discussion upthread, i saw it for the first time a few months back in the recent restoration, i thought it was good-good. not particularly digestible or "great" but not so-bad-it's-good. just closer to NYC performance art of the time than to the fun crazy NYC-set cheapo scifi exploitation movie which it's masquerading as.

there is also one point where one of the main characters is in this costume, seen very briefly, but it HAS to be where marc silvestri got the design for Jubilee. it's dead on.

This is on Amazon prime. Hadn't seen it in 20 years, very stunning in HD. Yes, it has plenty of ridiculous moments, although the humor seems purposeful to me. The cinematography is immaculate throughout.

The weird affected acting, deliberate framing, use of close ups, and bright colors all make this seem like a strong precursor to a number of indie directors like Hal Hartley and Gregg Araki.
