this is the thread where we talk breathlessly about the best TV show on North American television: THE AMAZING RACE!

Okay, the summer season has officially started. What do we think of our new crop of racers?

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:11 (twenty years ago) link

I like that there's a pair of clowns; I predict they'll be the bald brothers of this season. We also got a couple of virgins, who I can't quite read yet; a gay married couple who aren't out to the other teams (yet); another pair of frat boy types; the air traffic controllers, who got spirit; two couples who remind me of Fuzzy and the Bitch, last season's winners, and some others I can't recall.

Predictions?

etc?

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

Can anyone tell me why this isn't the most popular show on TV? Beats those other reality shows, I'll tell you what. I mean, they're racing around the world!

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:14 (twenty years ago) link

I get secondhand embarassment watching that show. There's a lot of footage of the contestants screaming at unsuspecting people "Where's this!" "How do I get here!", and they don't understand them. Its like when you're overseas and you see another American who think that if they speak really loud the other person will suddenly know English.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:28 (twenty years ago) link

Some people in particular are quite horrible about this.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:30 (twenty years ago) link

O those wacky ignorant Americans!

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:30 (twenty years ago) link

hrm

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:31 (twenty years ago) link

yeah i wonder why it isn;t more popular. i was really into the first season. I think it's a bit harder to get into it because there are so many teams at first and it takes a while to get to know them. Phil is HOOOT though.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 30 May 2003 01:32 (twenty years ago) link

I forgot to mention the NFL wives!

Too bad about the couple that got booted, they seemed way nicer than those model types. But I guess they wouldn't have been able to keep up.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:01 (twenty years ago) link

you have been philiminated.

it screens v. late monday nights here in oz. an undoubted classic that rewards co-operation and good sense. a pleasant change from all the fame whores on dirge like the batchelor. still grimace when thinking of flo's victory last season.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:14 (twenty years ago) link

I know, that KILLED me! Though Fuzzy seemed pretty nice. He deserved it. But Flo man, that just wasn't right. I was all for the Bald Bros.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:20 (twenty years ago) link

the n.f.l. wives or the models will be the next to go. they are too flakey. although i did enjoy how one of the models took time out to enjoy an espresso at a coffee shop IN THE MIDDLE OF A RACE. i'm rooting for either the clowns or the corrections officer and his punk rock son.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 09:54 (twenty years ago) link

it's not as good as the Mole, but it's a respectable second.

I think the Clowns could do it. The Virgins will implode, that girl is just wearing her virginity like sixty pound weight around her neck. She won't be able to take the close proximity to the young me on the other teams.
The gay couple seems a little too obsessed with their own gayness, much the same as the virgins are by their virginity. It's not so much that they're gay that will alienate them from the other teams, it's the chip on the prettier one's shoulder about it that will.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

neither of these shows is as good as Monster Garage

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, muscle gay man has serious issues. he's married to a man and wants to exact revenge on people who made him feel bad for being gay and yet he doesn't want the other teams to know that he is gay!!! whatta weirdo. i miss team guido and team cha cha cha already.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 14:17 (twenty years ago) link

and one of the bald brothers was gay too.

I mean, for this Ken-Doll to make an issue about being gay on this show is just fucking ridiculous.

In other news, I just spilled coffee on my yellow shirt. FUCK. I am never ever ever wearing anything but khaki ever again!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 14:24 (twenty years ago) link

Scott, you think the NFL wives will go soon? I think they are going to do alright (though it was really foolish to go for the fast forward on the FIRST leg). I can't see the models making it that far, and the air traffic controllers are only good in the air. If they lose their lead, that one guy's knee is going to cause them to lose the race.

By the way, great title for the thread. Definitely THE best reality show out there!

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

i know the girl who won last year

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:24 (twenty years ago) link

I've got to ask. What's she like in person? She didn't seem like much on the show last year, with her personality and all (rather selfish, bitchy, demanding, and didn't like to put any effort forth, but blamed the other guy for everything). And I'd like to say it was just the editing of the show that made her look bad, but it wasn't.

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

she dated a friend of mine for a long time. i didn't see much of the show, but yr description isn't too far off the mark. she can be very sweet tho.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:44 (twenty years ago) link

Watching the butterball lady and her husband taking tumbles any time running was required was quite th' hoot; she totally ass-planted herself running through the airport concourse in Milan, which required a slow re-viewing on TiVo.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 30 May 2003 16:41 (twenty years ago) link

Do you know if Flo gave up more than half of the winnings to Zach, since he basically carried her the whole way while she flirted with the twinbots?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 16:55 (twenty years ago) link

i have no idea. i haven't seen her since the show started. she & my friend split. (and i haven't seen him in ages either)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 30 May 2003 16:57 (twenty years ago) link

jonathan- the N.F.L. wives need to shed their pampered suburban instincts and get a little more competitive. It was a bad sign that they were bitching before they had even left L.A.!! That's never a good sign cuz the race is so long and anytime someone loses their shit that early on-like chubby hubby crying cuz he didn't get the hotel room!!-it doesn't bode well for a team. same with the models. i knew that the one was gonna start crying in the snow before they even got there. you gotta be tough, a little loud, and quick on your feet. The air traffic controllers will obviously have the edge as far as airports/air travel and that is a big help, actually. so much of their time is spent in airports, which is probably why some people don't like the show cuz it just reminds them of travel nightmares. I have travelling dreams all the time-i think that's why i like the show. it DOES make me breathless. my wife was eating dinner last night when it was on and she stopped and said "Jesus, this show is making me eat too fast!".

It kinda looked like to me that the chubby, happy couple were a little relieved to be out of it. I don't think you can actually be that happy and in love to win the race. You need someone to goad you on.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah, except for the first two, which were won by yuppie frat boys, the best teams always have shitty relationships with each other.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

that's true. the robot lawyers/twins that are so maddening in their efficiency and triathalon-style rigor often do well. It does help to keep a cool head. I still cringe when i think about the sad mother/daughter team stuck in the cab in India. Yikes! I also remember thinking: what is the fucking cameraman thinking who is sitting right fucking next to them!

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:13 (twenty years ago) link

Probably something about hot mother/daughter action.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

I certainly miss Team Cha Cha Cha. They were delightful.

And I agree--the NFL wives shouldn't have taken that Fast Forward. Very dumb--and they even came in fourth! Baaaaaad move on their part.

I'm sure the air traffic controllers will have a slight advantage in the airports, but I don't know how they're going to do in the more footrace-oriented parts of the competition.

the corrections officer and his punk rock son.

This is a very funny team. The son is such an archetypal hipster. Remember those two hipster roommates last season? Those guys were great.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:20 (twenty years ago) link

Has anyone ever been to one of the Tarcons that Television Without Pity throws at the end of the show and usually the teams ditch the cbs party to attend?

Carey (Carey), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

No, but I've always been heartened that people care enough about the show to do that. At the end of every season I always get afraid that CBS'll cancel it.

Perhaps this summer will finally be the show's triumphant breakthrough to the American public.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

i still think one of the greatest elements of that show is when a team thinks they have it made in the shade and are so far ahead and then they just end up waiting till 8 in the morning for something to open up. the looks on their faces as team after team starts showing up to wait with them is always priceless. Especially when they try to pretend like it's no big deal.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I think it's smart that teams can't get too far ahead of the others. Keeps the drama/unpredictability up.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with you on the fact that it's good that teams can't get too far ahead, but there were times last season when Mr. Vietnam and his punching bag wife (well, verbally, at least) were behind, and I was praying that they would finally get knocked off, but then some challenge or whatever would allow all teams to catch up. It's very frustrating when the team you hate is in last place, and then catches up.
Oh, and Scott, I agree with you that the NFL wives shouldn't have been so bitchy early on, but I don't think that normally hurts a team as much as an early fast forward. I still hope they last a few weeks, just because I think they could be interesting.

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, it can be frustrating.

(I was hoping Mr. Vietnam would have some traumatic "in country" flashbacks, whirling helicopter blades and all--but I actually liked him better when he was there)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:25 (twenty years ago) link

(Really?! I didn't. I thought he was really cocky, kind of giving the whole, wow, these people can be nice. Hmmm.. don't regret blowing the shit out of them, but nice to see they learned how to respect us Americans. I thought he was a pig.
And the way he treated his wife was unbearable.)

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

He was really horrible to be sure. But he seemed a little calmer and more introspective in Vietnam. Maybe it's just me.

(BUT I DID HATE THE FUCKER!)

(though he was pretty fucking good at playing the game I though)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:11 (twenty years ago) link

(i love this show too - missed the first one though... already hate the NFL wives sight unseen)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

they're not that bad--I think the other players were a bit rough on them--and when they got the cop to lead them to the airport it was a bit of a triumph

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

Does anybody know if cab drivers, hotel/airport employees, local authorities, etc. are briefed by TAR staff? The show always seems a little closed-circuit in the paths the players take and the way they always have such useful interactions with third parties (which probably helps keep things organized and entertaining, sure).

gazuga (gazuga), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:42 (twenty years ago) link

I've always wondered about the logistics--especially the camera operators, who they edit around really really well.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

so anyway, venice was nice and all and the eyes wide shut thing was an inspired touch. can't say that i even remember the team that got kicked off though. also, if the n.f.l. wives make it one more week i just might start rooting for them. But only if they can stop talking about how people think they are pampered cuz of their life of luxury. i would believe them about the life of luxury if it weren't for the fact that i have seen way too many episodes of mtv's cribs. sports star's homes are invariably half-empty McMansions with a big fishtank and 4 S.U.V.'s in the driveway. not MY idea of luxury, but you know, whatever.

scott seward, Friday, 6 June 2003 10:26 (twenty years ago) link

I thought this thread was going to be about white supremacists.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 June 2003 10:33 (twenty years ago) link

harf

Yeah, I didn't think this was the best episode--not enough locations really. That snow-rafting thing looked fun as hell, but it wasn't much of a challenge. And I was somewhat confused during all the train station whatnot.

But yeah, the eyes wide shut business was kind of amusing. Looked kind of rough for that one NFL wife who was in there forever. I actually kind of like them. (and good for the air-traffic controllers for using the fast-forward--that was a smart move)

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 16:41 (twenty years ago) link

oh shit, how much better was this week's episode than last? the confrontation over the carriages, the asthma attack--THE AMAZING RACE IS BACK!!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

Also it's apparently doing pretty well in the ratings, finally, which is good news for everyone.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, there was a lot going on! and it's official- I'm rooting for the n.f.l. wives as much as i'm rooting for anyone else. i even feel bad now for the one model who has to do everything. boy, did she pick the wrong friend to go with.the ending was good too. i didn't really like that one team, but getting the wrong train tickets...that was a nightmare.

scott seward, Friday, 13 June 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that other model is just horrible. makes me gnash my teeth.

33rd season premiere was last night. A wrinkle is that they made it three episodes before covid cancelled things in 2020, so I guess when they got the all-clear they just picked up where they left off. The season premiere is therefore all pre-covid, but I think after the next episode it's ... well, not post-covid, but some months later. Curious how that plays out. Like, what if a couple broke up in between?

Speaking of couples, the teams this season lean kind of hard on novelties - a lot of youtube/reality people - but there are some compelling pairings. For example, two best friends, one of whom was wrongfully imprisoned for a decade. Or the guys that stopped that terrorist on a train in France. And some other folks, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:58 (two years ago) link

OK, this is kind of interesting, in a time capsule sort of way. At the end of the second episode there is a *19 month* leap forward. Some teams do not return to resume the race (with no explanation), some previously eliminated teams get to come back, some people have lost their jobs, some have had family members die of covid, travel going forward is on chartered flights but otherwise generally avoiding public transportation in favor of driving, people are wearing masks, we suspect challenges were re-considered with social distancing in mind ... kind of surreal.
