Minions - Classic Or Dud?

As part of the budgeting at work for the next year (our work operating on some mad system whereby this year ends in November) I am being potentially given a MINION. This is a first for me and very exciting. Will I be a kind master or a cruel one, I wonder?

So - do you have any minions? Do they do your bidding without question or are you rebellious? Which if any management theory hem hem do you subscribe to?

Tom, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am currently taking applications for minions myself. They must do my bidding without question, of course. Some of the things they may be asked to do might be humiliating, distasteful, or even illegal, but no matter. They must also be adept at constantly flattering me, and it must be done convincingly.

Sean, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am surrounded by student minions. They obey or they get fired. I am a Kind Soul, though. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When I was a minion, I was sent on Photocopier Training. This is not a lie. I feel this a perfectly reasonable and also useful way to dispense with some of your budget and I intend to send my minions on Photocopier Training as soon as I get some.

Madchen, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

photocopier training=gross misuse of minions. Archiving too.

turner, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dud because they will end up rising up and defeatign you .

anthony, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ever see 'All About Eve'?

jason, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i am a minion currently. my boss is great, she totally appreciates what i do, and that makes me want to do a good job.

don't be a cruel master, Tom, or your minion will not be a well- behaved one. they will either: completely slack off, take ages to do anything and fuck it up when they do do anything, mutter sarcastic things about you, or they will tell you to stick your job up your arse and do something really mean to you like throw something at you. if you are nice to your minion they will respond favourably.

di, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Man, this is like a real life 'Dungeon Keeper' - which incidentally is the best game ever.

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fear not Di I will be a kindly Overlord and not even send my minion on Photocopier Training. But I do hope they enjoy charting.

Tom, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Aha! You mustn't be a MORON to your MINIONS hem hem. Don't underestimate their powers of scorn and ability to hate. Search: that episode of Buffy where Harmony turns up with her minions. Tee hee! Remember, minions have a lot more power than you think they do. They can make your life miserable, and they WILL cast voodoo down the pub.

Sarah, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I discount that theory. I'm a total minion, they're dead nice to me and that makes me even lazier. I woke up in the afternoon yesterday and rang in sick. I feel guilty for doing so little sometimes

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Just remember if you're gonna have minions then you really need to have the strength of 20 men because they usually try an uprising or some shit.

this is a weird culty thing now isn't it? a friend of my o/h had a hen party last year where they all dressed up as minions and learnt a dance. Thankfully they looked nothing like these thoughwhich are totally off the WTF scale http://www.dailydot.com/geek/sexy-minion-halloween-costumes/

It's like they've become an emblem for a huge population of boring adults that want others to think that they're sassy. I'm not sure why.

Evan, Friday, 10 July 2015 14:58 (eight years ago) link

The amount of shite inspirational/cutesy/lolzy dreck quotes appearing over picture of minions that has appeared all over Facebook recently is truly depressing. I'm not sure why minions are the optimal vehicle for this crap, but it seems that they are, and people are buying into it. People who really should know better.

I liked the film a fair amount, but have zero desire to adopt a minion-centric lifestyle as a result. Bang-up marketing gig from the minion creators though.

My 7 year old is obsessed with these things. There are drawings of minions all over the house (along with drawings of Pokemon, which are having some kind of resurgence with 7 year olds), he actually knows the release date of this movie, he keeps singing that banana song (cover of "Barbara Ann" from a trailer for the previous movie I think). My life is a nightmare.

silverfish, Friday, 10 July 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link

Going to see this nonsense tomorrow.

schwantz, Friday, 10 July 2015 18:34 (eight years ago) link

Minions are well and truly past the shark moment. Or have sharks jumped the shark? Is it all about baconing now?

Saw trailer for first Despicable Me before some other CGI tat: lots of cheap fart gags. Said "oh god please let us never watch this". Did eventually see first film; pretty funny, wondered why they used such a horrible trailer for an OK film (not that it did them any harm, so yeah, marketing dept knows more abt making money from kids than snooty childless 30somethings who went to watch a Pixar shocker*). Saw second film; OK. Will probably eventually see the Minions film and laugh at it a bit.

But all the "people keep posting on my facebook" shite, and people at work randomly going "lol minions lololol BA-NA-NA loooool", and the small child I sawheard in the shop having a protracted meltdown at its mother for not buying the yoghurts with the Minion on the packaging... dud.
This post brought to you in the posting style of ILX ten years ago but I've had a few drinks so there it is.

* another CGI film trailer we said "oh god please let us never watch this" to and then did actually see and we were right the first time: Gnomeo and Juliet. Don't watch that. Oh no, there's a sequel. Don't watch that either. Probably.

Abraham raves doubtlessly (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 10 July 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

i saw this last night. it was an advance screening, i guess? i think it was the first cgi film i've seen since maybe toy story or something. it was really beautiful. it was never funny enough to make me laugh but also didn't trouble me by pressing other emotional buttons. there was no message of acceptance or the importance of friendship. audience was mostly single dads with their kids and young asian couples devotedly handholding from coming attractions to credits. we got the minions mini-combo, which featured a branded popcorn box with space for the minions cup with figurine mounted on top, miniature tube of miniature m&ms.

I thought this was great. Better than "Inside Out", only because I'm tired of Pixar, kinda.

The minions are a hilarious rip-off of assorted characters from Veggie Tales. I'd even forgotten that they steal from the French Peas, who were henchmen.

And the idea of the series seems to be from that moment in the first Toy Story where the toy aliens ask Buzz Lightyear to be their chosen leader.

friend I saw it with agreed that if you're 7-9 years old you're obsessed with these things. You'd want to buy every toy, know all their backstories (friend alluded to fan-fiction emerging, finally)

"Minion-sense" is one of the funniest, poignant and truthful sets of images available on the Web. If you are "down" read them and I guarantee that they will make you chuckle

is "Minion-sense" a collective term for facebooks macros featuring these things and sassy aphorisms? I googled it and found this:

Jesus Christ the Minions movie was a piece of shit. Maybe it's unrealistic to hope for something more than a flimsy set of dance pieces, fart jokes, and explosions from a minions movie, but this was awful. Nothing in the movie made sense, and none of the humor had any creativity or ANY sense of surprise. I had just listened to Pete Docter on Fresh Air talk about how much thought they put into Inside Out - the metaphors for different functions and areas of he brain, how they worked on the script for 3 years before scrapping everything and starting over, etc. If he sees Minions, he's gonna be like "oh I guess none of that matters cuz you can just make a dumbass movie for six-year-olds and still rake in the dough." Ugh. This movie made me mad with its shittiness.

schwantz, Sunday, 12 July 2015 17:21 (eight years ago) link

All I know from this is I saw some news story about the toys "cursing", and the news story had the sound effect BLEEPED OUT so you couldn't tell for yourself. Then I looked up an uncensored video. It does not sound like cursing. It doesn't sound like anything more than a cheap speaker in a toy.

Kind of wondering how a news story like that hits. Does Pixar have a social media marketing person emailing made up stories like this to entertainment journalists around the country?

This is like when news channels were talking about how people were depressed Avatar wasn't real. rmde try harder corporate media

They were pretty funny diversions during the two Despicable Me films and it was inevitable they were going to be pushed down our collective throats for a couple of years. Until the next blue (Smurfs) or yellow (Lego movies etc) little doll type things come along.

In fifteen years the minions will be sampled on a zillion acid house tracks by musicians who grew up on them. The earth is circular.
