I wouldn't worry too much about aspartame. It's no more deadly than pure sugar, I feel. There's been more than enough time for such a news story to appear in the horizon if any scientists, researchers, or members of the general public have found to the contrary.
And I prefer diet sodas. I was raised mainly on diet sodas and feel more comfortable drinking that instead of the regular kind. Of course, I loved my Delaware Punch, but I found that its fruity taste was preferable to the "pure sugar" taste of a regular Coke or Pepsi.

This is old news, really. It was proven long ago to cause cancer in animals. Judging from experience, it's definitely not for everybody. Aspartame in diet sodas used to provoke panic attacks in me and also caused shortness of breath amnong other crazy things.

Citations please? And at what doses, and how close or far are these from routine human consumption?
As for the formaldehyde bit, yes, but fruit juice produces even larger amounts (although still within limits generally recognized as safe).

That should provide some insight. Trident gum packets used to carry a disclaimer saying it contained what acted as a brain carcinogen in rodents, and that the effect on humans was still "undetermined".

Why I'll be... I'm totally not sure anymore now I've seen who's been involved in pushing this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame
Searle's Chief Operating Officer, Donald Rumsfeld, reapplied for FDA certification immediately after U.S. President Ronald Reagan took office.[8] In 1981, Reagan appointed Arthur Hull Hayes as FDA commissioner. Citing data from a Japanese study that had not been available to the members of the PBOI[citation needed], Hayes approved aspartame for use in dry goods.
(...)
These findings, combined with possible conflicts of interest involving CEO Donald Rumsfeld in the approval process, have engendered vocal activism regarding the possible risks of aspartame.

We live in the woods and carpenter ants are a huge problem. We have spent thousands of dollars with Orkin and on ant poisons trying to keep them under control but nothing has helped.
So when I read somewhere that aspartame (Nutrasweet) was actually developed as an ant poison and only changed to being considered non-poisonous after it was realized that a lot more money could be made on it as a sweetener than as an ant poison, I decided to give it a try.
I opened two packets of aspartame sweetener, and dumped one in a corner of each of our bathrooms. That was about 2 years ago and I have not seen any carpenter ants for about 9 to 12 months. It works better than the most deadly poisons I have tried. Any time they show up again, I simply dump another package of Nutrasweet in a corner, and they will be gone for a year or so again.

apparently anything that can kill an ant is poisonous in the same dosage to humans, since we're of identical size and physiology and all

It was rejected by the FDA, another president took office, the company reapplied and this time they received their certification.
You don't have to be paranoid to think this just smells funny.

In 1985 Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet. Monsanto was apparently untroubled by aspartame's clouded past, including a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, comprised of three independent scientists, which confirmed that it "might induce brain tumors." The FDA had actually banned aspartame based on this finding, only to have Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld (currently the Secretary of Defense) vow to "call in his markers," to get it approved. On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan's inauguration, Searle re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame in food sweetener, and Reagan's new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the board of inquiry's decision. It soon became clear that the panel would uphold the ban by a 3-2 decision, but Hull then installed a sixth member on the commission, and the vote became deadlocked. He then personally broke the tie in aspartame's favor.

Aside to any other nursing or medical peeps who might be lurking on this revived thread, metabolic acidosis would be caught pretty damn fast on an ABG, correct? We do them frequently at our facility. "Metabolic acidosis" is not a f*cking mystery condition that can't be detected or treated!

For some reason it is more galling to me with the person who posted this than it would otherwise be because she didn't used to be a conspiracy theory kook.

We had this in Europe in the 80's with E numbers - most of which are from natural sources, making it really annoying when people would say things like "oh, we don't let our children eat anything containing E numbers".
― TO BE PLAYED AT MINIMUM VOLUME (snoball), Sunday, 8 September 2013 22:47 (ten years ago) link
Then there's the equally annoying flipside, people saying "oh, we only let our children eat things made from natural ingredients", as if everything natural is automatically safe.

There is a woman at the website where I write who calls herself the "3nlight3nm3nt 4dvis0r" - all about the evil chemicals, only buy natural, etc. And calling herself that is SO GRATING.

"oh, we only let our children eat things made from natural ingredients" <-- got some really delicious and attractively-coloured toadstools to sell you
though at one point I was drinking a lot of diet soda and did notice a correlation between diet drinks and my head/stomach hurting (which admittedly was happening a fair bit at the time for stress-related reasons, which is why I didn't notice immediately and why it may just be in my head), so I do have a slight soft spot for this particular conspiracy theory, but... there are limits
― the supreme personality of Godhead : a summary study (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 8 September 2013 23:06 (ten years ago) link
Well, yes - there certainly could be downsides or rxns to aspartame - there just isn't any peer reviewed evidence that it causes the particular things that have been studied.
That being said, my husband feels sick if he drinks milk; he's just sensitive to that substance. Probably every "natural" and every "synthetic" thing on the planet distresses someone in some way.
I've always kind of wanted them to prove that aspartame is bad for you... because it is so gross and somehow it seems like it *should* be. But that article is so blatantly nonsense that it just distresses me that people don't see through it immediately.
