Charles Napier (but yeah, Guzman is always gd)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 27 December 2003 18:21 (twenty years ago) link

I need to see more films were Guzman role isn't to stand around dumbfounded and belligerent. Both are talented but I've seen Hoffman show more range. Guzman may be just as capable but due to Hollywood stereotyping and the whole whatnot I haven't had to watch Hoffman play "street thug #3" in numerous films.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 27 December 2003 18:47 (twenty years ago) link

Though no one held a gun to Guzman's head and made him get mauled in the crotch by a dog while Kiefer Sutherland and Woody Harrelson laughed in cowboy hats. As Robert Townshend noted, "there's always work at the post office."

has guzman ever played lead? (psh: lead in 'love liza'.)

i was underwhelmed by '25th hour'.

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Was Guzman in that?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:21 (eighteen years ago) link

no.

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:22 (eighteen years ago) link

That must be why.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:40 (eighteen years ago) link

memo to spike lee!

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Luis Guzman was great in Traffic and should have gotten the Academy Award nod instead of Benicio Del Toro.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Was Philip Seymour Hoffman in Traffic?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:22 (eighteen years ago) link

no. i think they have only done the PTA films togeths.

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:23 (eighteen years ago) link

That must be why. (... Del Toro got the Oscar.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I vote Hoffman, because of "Uhhh...Dickie" (one of my favorite movie lines to imitate) and because I'm a racist.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:43 (eighteen years ago) link

For his performance in The Limey, I'm voting Guzman.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Though wait, Guzman was on Homicide in like the FIRST SEASON, which makes him pretty old-school.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Guzman was also great as one of the grownup quiz contestants on "What Do Kids Know?" in Magnolia.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Guzman was also great as one of the grownup quiz contestants on "What Do Kids Know?" in Magnolia.

mm, pretty meaty role there.

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, and for some reason the gag reel easter egg on the DVD is well over 50% Guzman.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I believe it said "supporting actor," Enrique. Why don't you go on the Agnes Moorehead thread and cause trouble over there?

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

iirc he was barely a walk-on, let alone a supporting actor!

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:20 (eighteen years ago) link

The designation "supporting actor" used to denote something aside from "second/third lead" as it's known now (at least in Oscar terms). On the other hand, I'm almost sure I read somewhere that the term meant anyone whose name was typically billed under the title.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm going to vote for PSH because he's sexy. Yep. I said it. Guzman is probably a better supporting actor though, since PSH is such a total scene stealer on account of his good looks.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey, it may have been a walk-on, but for those few seconds, he stole the show! Are you going to contest that he was a supporting actor in The Limey as well?

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

He WAS a supporting actor in The Lime insofar as Terence Stamp had more screen time.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:58 (eighteen years ago) link

we-ell, 'magnolia' is already packed w. characters (they're all supporting actors?) so in that context, it's a walk-on. i can't remember 'the limey'.

N_RQ, Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Which one will get elected Governor of California first?

M. V. (M.V.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Let's get one thing cleared up right now. As far as bit parts in Magnolia go, there is only Cleo King.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:19 (eighteen years ago) link

PSH in boogie nights: win
