any thoughts on bushwick?

for the NYC ilxors.. it's a neighborhood in north Brooklyn, directly east of Williamsburg. the JMZ and L lines run through it. I'm moving into an apartment on DeKalb, off the Central Ave stop, and I've heard varying things about the crime rate and general safety of the area. I know of a few students (NYU, New School, FIT) who have tentatively started to move into the area but all the accounts are so far conflicting. any thoughts? the more opinionated the better. gracias!

i hear if you step there, you'll get mushed quick

oops (Oops), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

bleh.. well that's rather discouraging. i've heard the same thing from a handful of folks who live on the w'burg / bushwick border but no concrete stories, which makes me wonder. i've also heard that it's gentrifying pretty quick. but i'll chalk up another mark for the "war zone" side of the board..

js, Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

I haven't had any problems when I've been through there (I don't live there, but I've been in the hood a bunch), but some friends of mine have at various points. Like most neighborhoods, safety's a block-to-block thing.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

although it's kinda unclear to me where W'burg ends and Bushwick begins.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago) link

h, agreed... i know the area i'm in is definitely bushwick.. i'd venture to say a good demarcation line is after the split in the JMZ. a friend of mine lives off the flushing ave. stop on that line. she thinks it's bushwick but of course the brokers addressed it as south williamsburg. coattail-riding fuckers...

your advice is much appreciated. i've been out to the place quite a bit though i haven't moved in yet and the neighborhood seems fine. not a place i'd walk around drunk alone at 3am, but still, fine. i figured i'd ask to see if anyone had horror stories though.

js, Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

you'll probably be fine. but keep your valuables in a safe just in case.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:10 (twenty years ago) link

yeah I know some people consider parts of the L line to be basically Bushwick, too. But to me there's not always a clear demarcation as to where Bed-Stuy ends, Williamsburg begins, Bushwick starts and ends, etc. Other than Bushwick Ave., I guess.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

I have heard a bunch of horror stories about Bushwick, but you don't really want to know, do you? The main one was that guy from Joe's Pub who got killed on his way home from work a couple of years ago. It doesn't necessarily mean the neighbourhood's unsafe.

antexit (antexit), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

Just carry a gun. The NRA says being armed at all times makes you safer, it must be true.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:09 (nineteen years ago) link

when i lived in bushwick, the border was pretty much anything on or after the Grand Ave stop on the L (though now some real estate people are trying to call much of it "East Williamsburg").

i lived off the montrose stop right next to the projects and never really felt sketched out--and this was back when i was partying a lot more and would come home at all hours (and i'm also a small asian girl).

however, other people living in the same neighborhood said they had a different experience....one of my roommates at the time was riding his bike on our street and apparently these two teenage hoodrats started chasing him hoping to mug him and get the bike--luckily he peddled away before they could.

my theory is that as long as you don't appear to have anything on you worth stealing you run less of risk of being bothered....of course, i'm only basing all this off MY old neighborhood. i lived in an industrial loft area that was full of young people who were up at various hours. no matter how late at night it was there was always some other 20-something year old on my street either walking to or from the subway.

it depends if you're living in a residential neighborhood, a young and gentrified neighborhood, or in the ghetto.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha jesus, sorry.

My take: used to be a wasteland of abandoned factory buildings, starting not to be; get a bike. I have some good friends who live on Varet Street and they paid like $300 a month for the entire floor of a warehouse. They had parties w/like 200-300 people in there easily. Landlord raised their rent to $3000 one day. It's still a deal!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm still convinced it's also very much how you carry yourself. Do you walk like a victim? Do you seem like a target? I have a friend who's been mugged multiple times, often in "nice" neighborhoods. Sometimes when I'm walking down the street with him, I want to mug him. But in my many years in NYC, in many bad areas at bad times of night, I haven't had any trouble. The closest I've gotten to being mugged was in front of Boogaloo, so I'd say just avoid all of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn forever. Except for Tommy's Tavern this and next saturday.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:21 (nineteen years ago) link

when did you get bugged in front of Boogaloo? I had a fun time there and at El Bohemio a couple weeks ago (didn't know it was such a rough corner).

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I got mugged one time in Park Slope and actually ended up in a conversation with the guy. He said he didn't like my attitude and I told him I was high so maybe I was paranoid. That loosened him up and he told me that he "ran the drug game" on that block, we should hook up if I ever needed anything. And then he gave me my five dollars back!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Of course I also got mugged on time about 4 blocks from the Bedford L stop by about five guys dressed in black from head to toe and only escaped because somebody came out their front door at exactly the right time. When I got home it turned out my roomie got rolled by the same guys; knife at throat and gun jabbed in stomach. They got like five bucks. Geniuses.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:29 (nineteen years ago) link

one time a friend was walking in Park Slope talking on his cellphone and some dude walked by and pushed him and said "Cellphone faggot!" My friend decked him, then walked away.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:33 (nineteen years ago) link

but was your friend a cellphone faggot?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

no, his cellphone is a breeder.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:40 (nineteen years ago) link

then that was totally out of the question.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm still convinced it's also very much how you carry yourself.

there's an element of that, no doubt, but if someone's out to mug people then there's not any way of carrying yourself that's going to put them off. i was strolling confidently down devoe street in williamsburg on my way to a friend's party, turned the corner onto olive street, and shazam. a guy with gun pedalled up on his bike and demanded my bag. no amount of self-possession or savvy is going to prevent something like that.

I don't get why anyone would CHOOSE to live in Bushwick. The only reason I could see would be monetary, but how much would you really save living there, and is it worth the quality of life tradeoff?

two years pass...
Bump.

We found a place on McKibben yesterday. How is the consensus two years later? It's about three blocks from the L at either Montrose or Morgan. I've been out there a few times and never had any problems.

snumbers (snumbers), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

we just moved out of bushwick friday. already my life is thousands of times better. we lived two blocks south of mckibben. jon got mugged by the JMZ. the week before we moved, someone tried to shoot a cop on our corner. the stench of the live poultry store and garbage that had been baking in the heat all day wafted in my window all the time. some of our neighbors were really nice, but they were all seemed to hate the neighborhood as much as we did and were very excited that we got to move to a nicer place (the hate may have been directed more at our landlord than neighborhood, but, with shitty neighborhoods come shitty landlords). we found a nicer, cheaper place in actual williamsburg. keep looking, perhaps you will too.

snumbers, i think you're moving into my old building. or the one across the street.

anyway, i was mugged twice while i lived there, tho both involved walking home alone drunk in the middle of the night.

also: if it's the building i'm thinking of, have fun in winter. the windows are all busted and the heat's a joke. also one or all of your neighbors will be in a band that practices in their apartment.

It was 248. I can deal with the noise, but not the getting mugged. I guess if nobody has anything good to say I'll pass on up-and-coming Brooklyn.

snumbers (snumbers), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

the problem with that row of "lofts" is that, to a crook it's like "here be sitting ducks" place. Other parts of Bushwick are more chilled-out, but it helps to be as near to the subway as possible, or to have a car/bike.

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 20:03 (seventeen years ago) link

tell me you don't have a problem with the noise when the pentecostals are preaching outside your window and singing terribly until 11 pm and then all night garbage trucks and chicken deliveries wake you up until finally in the morning the salsa music starts up again. and oh yeah, it's the SAME song on repeat ALL day EVERY day.

sexydancer's otm on everything. The hipster dorms are a giant, easy target. So many marks in such one handy location. I moved a couple blocks over into a normal apartment above a sporting goods store and wasn't bothered for the next couple months i lived there.

the salsa music all day is grating, yes.

p@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm sure the mugging target thing is true near the lofts, but my experiences listed above were from a normal apt, not fancy new loft.

last couple of times in Bushwick have really felt my age, like it still doesn't feel much at the "stroller" level of gentrification but still at the 20-somethings-with-*cool*-jobs level of gentrification. Both H and I noticed it felt remarkably similar to Williamsburg circa 2003 or so (without Bedford Ave) -- w/the galleries and music venues and scattered trendy restaurants/coffee places throughout a landscape that was otherwise either desolate industrial or cheaply built rowhouses, w/ roving bands of (mostly) white twenty-somethings and Hispanic families. Except that then we were 24 and now we're 36.

three weeks pass...

not really sure where else to post this without feeling awkward, but: our house on lawton street caught fire last week. my roommate's room, our kitchen and living room were totally wiped out, ditto the upstairs kitchen and living room, and every bedroom in the house got at least some measure of smoke and water damage. everybody has had to move out and is in the process of extracting and trying to clean/save anything not blatantly soaked and sooted to the bone. this has not really been very fun in a lightless house with face masks and headlamps. the worst thing of all is that our cat passed away of smoke inhalation, which i really don't even want to talk about. we're hoping it was quick and relatively painless.

i say all this as a preamble to, there is a gofundme for all us housemates (save Shuj4 H41d3r who lived downstairs of me - if you follow him on twitter you know he got his act together sooner to set up a fundraiser [plus had separate additional expenses to deal with] and has also shared this one). i hardly would ask any of y'all internet cats here to donate but please consider sharing, and more in the spirit of ILX, coming out to the bar-room fundraisers this friday! happy hour at marcos (broadway & malcolm x) from 2 to 8 followed by band showcase at The Gateway from 8:00 on. come have a drink, bring your friends, spread the word! i will be the frequently unshaven man wearing stupid hipster aviator glasses.
