During Balaban's time at Dinamo Zagreb, he had an incident with fascistic salute, which he sent to fans after scoring a goal against Inter Zapresic. He had to pay a fine of 100KN (around 14euros).

1) Bosko Balaban (Aston Villa)
The Croatian arrived in the second city for a fairly pricey £6m from Dinamo Zagreb in 2001 as Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis decided to loosen the purse strings for once. Earning £20,000 a week, the striker was seen as the answer to Villa’s goalscoring problems and was deemed the ‘future’ of the club.
Unfortunately for him, Balaban turned out to be anything but a success - he was woefully short of fitness and he simply could not handle the power and intensity of the Premier League. He was utilised as a substitute, originally with the intention of it only being temporary while he became used to English football, but it soon became apparent he was not getting any better. The Croat played in just eight Premier League games - and all of them were as a substitute! Predictably no goals arrived and, although he smashed in 15 while back on loan at Zagreb, Villa had simply had enough of him.
His contract was cancelled in December 2003 and he signed for Belgian side Club Brugge on a free transfer. Incredibly he netted 25 goals in his first 24 appearances for Brugge and looked a completely different player to the one who had fumbled around aimlessly after the ball at Villa Park. Maybe Villa were duped and were sent the wrong player - or maybe Balaban was just hopeless in English football. What is for certain, though, is that Balaban tops Sportsmail’s list of the worst-ever Premier League strikers.
