Faithless, by several light years

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

See thats what I thought.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag, by the span of the entire Universe.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag = 1000000000 times better than anything Faithless have ever done soley because it made SinXoR cry.

RickyT, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

whose "Faithless" are we overrating here? (not that it matters as TD = greatest song evah written anyway except for Rio and Iron Man)

mark s, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What Tom said. Faithless are the pits. But has anybody ever heard anything else by Wheatus?

Andrew L, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag --> bad cover of Respect, Faitless --> Dido, so both rather large DUDs, but on the whole it's gotta be Teenage Dirtbag.

Off on a tangent - has anyone noticed they've cut that bit out of the car ad (Renault?), where the air hostesses were in the car with the pilot - is this some kind of bizarre Sept 11th thing?

Andrew Williams, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When I said Faithless were better by several light years that didn't mean I like Faithless.

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Insomniac-Ok slightly cheesy anthem, but nonetheless one of the best slightly cheesy anthems ever. Teenage Dirtbag-Completely cheesy anthem, one of the worst completely cheesy anthems ever.

Plus Faithless have God is a DJ and Salva Mea and other songs that are particularly good when you're off your head.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag = Greatest Performance in the History of Recorded Music.

(And also infinitely quotable as pick-up line)

Graham, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Teenage Dirtbag" makes me very angry indeed. I DON'T CARE, you snivelling little urchin. Fuck off.

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There was that great rave-era track which went "Insomniac! I MUST SLEEP!". That might have been better than Teenage Dirtbag but Faithless? You're having a larff mate.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't call Graham a snivelling little urchin, it's not nice.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Seems he's not the only one.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Insomniac! I MUST SLEEP!"

it was by DJPC i think a twin of LA Style's James Brown is Dead.

as to the question, teenage dirtbag, duh!

gareth, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Faithless are appalling. their first album was patchy, and the 2nd and 3rd are just dull from start to finish. by the third they sound like a bad version of themselves. i have had the misfortune to listen to all three albums, including the bonus disc for each one. MC Maxi Jazz's lyrics and delivery are abysmal and they are responsible for Dido (she is Rollo's sister).

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I wasn't calling Graham a snivelling little urchin - I was calling the Wheatus singer a snivelling little urchin. I like Graham because he reminds me of my time and friends from Manchester (ahh.. Manchester)
Because of the running order of the posts, I can see how misunderstandings could arise.

Sorry for any misunderstanding. I do heartily despise Wheatus though.

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Whereas Faithless fill me with a vaguely pleasant ambivalent apathy.

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Faithless = The WoodentopZoR?

will you are angry becoz you are not used to having your emotions touched so perspicaciously for i think we can surely say that urchin = all of us oh yes, who among us has not looked across a room blah blah

mark s, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I knew that Will. I was having a larff mate. Sorry.

I didn't even know that the guy from Faithless was called MC Maxi Jazz. HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was calling Tom a snivelling little urchin. How bitchy of me.

Yes Faithless have crap albums but each album has one or two good songs so when you see them live you want to hear

1.Insomniac. 2.Salva Mea 3.Reverence 4.We come 1 5.God is a DJ.

Fuck the rest of their rubbish.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Maxi Jazz VS Maxi Priest VS Maxim Reality. Who is the most maximal?

RickyT, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

We come 1 = worst title in the world ever?

RickyT, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If you like Teenage Dirtbag and it makes you cry you are getting to a horrible state of vulnerability and desperation. I mean we've all been there but Wheatus????WHEATUS?????? I don't mean all of this of course. I'll listen to Faithless and you listen to Wheatus and we can all agree to disagree.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Rollo in Woodentops not the same as Rollo in Faithless (as it took me years to confirm.)

Andrew L, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The last song to touch my emotions perspicaciously was 'Some Enchanted Evening' - then fly to her side, and make her your own, or all through your life you may dream all alone

that is pure silk.
Wheatus are like scratchy bog roll for the ears.

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

We Come 1 is a good song, who gives a shit about the title. Not me anyway. I'm sure I could think of a worse song title. Way worse. Like say God is a DJ.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Rollo Faithless = jolly fat King Rollo?
what about your last Rollo?

Whimsical Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Rollo Tommasi.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not caring about titles is irredeemably rockist.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

will, can i have my wheatus record back now. you've had that nearly as long as DG has had my Strokes cd, and Pinefox my Beanie Sigel

gareth, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

blimey a lecture pertaining to deep emotional analysis from a RYAN ADAMS fan!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡

some smart fellachick can link to original my wheatus-weepage incident, and the actual whys and wheres: i do remembah that ben th*mpson told me i was weeoing for Impossibility of Art which given the pronouncements on this thread ain't surely none too soon — tho come to think of it twas he also told me the Rollos were but one!

mark s, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

THIS ISNT ABOUT RYAN ADAMS. LEAVE ME AND RYAN OUT OF THIS YOU TRAMP.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ryan doesn't love you anymore Ronan. he loves me now. we're going to make drill'n'basscountry together

gareth, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gareth! SHHHH!
I haven't yet finished with your Travis or Stereophonics...

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gareth you bitch, you can have Johnny Cash.

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Would that be the collaboration with the Aphex Twin, Gareth?

RickyT, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i luv me dancin' type music, buy i never understood the idolisation of faithless. are they grate? why?

I'm a hopeless case anyway cos i think Teenage Dirtbag is fantastic. bought the album too, ner. mr wheatus bloke does a good job of doing quite old fashioned guitar pop with a veneer of modern geek-rock to get ver kids on board. it's like when you listen to the police and can hear a trad reggae sound (which is what they wanted to do) with a veneer of post-punk (which is what the kids wanted). A

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Faithless are merely dull, whereas Wheatus are appalling.

stevo, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I put faithless in the same boat as the beautiful south. Put on my diving gear, swim underneath and drill a hole in the bottom. *evil laughter*

james, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Teenage Dirtbag: is dud because of triteness of teengeek revenge/triumph fantasy cliches (see fame thread) and big metal bluster whining; is classic because of combination of heartfeltness of said cliches (like MArk S said) and camp-bombast rendition of same via excellent tune. I hated it, my friend D casually loved it, I heard it again through his ears (metaphorically, natch) and now I can't not like it.

Ellie, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I kind of blame Faithless for the scourge on humanity that is Dido, so I will vote for Teenage Dirtbag to please my pokemon master.

Nicole, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I always thought it was Roland from Grange Hill!

james, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dido >> themetune to Roswell High >> Teenage Dirtbag in Space

mark s, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This whole question is the equivalent of a grinning torture master saying "Do you want the slow death by roasting or the slow death by intestinal extraction?"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wheatus are appaling, but Teenage Dirtbag obv gifted to them by a higher being.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Both of them have one genuis song; it's really a question of "Insomnia" versus "Teenage Dirtbag". I refuse to choose.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dan is correct. Someone needs to put together a Faithless vs Wheatus remix of "Insomnia" and "Teenage Dirtbag", I would listen to that shit all day long, it'd be even better than the Strokes vs Christina thing.

Ian, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

that's because the strokes vs Christina thing is not that good. I vote for wheatus by the way, mainly due to that Maxi Jazz chancer and his interviews about his spirituality and inner meaning. meh.

chris, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

those hybrid things are shit. the beach boys/michael jackson one they played at Trash was awful. the DJ Pied Piper 'do you really like it' vs Axel F is far far worse though

gareth, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

wait til you hear me mix the queen is dead into the private psychedelic reel. (in my dreams that is)

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bah, Teenage goo goo muck jumps into the ring with a chair. Thats not to be allowed.

Faithless rave anthems from their first two albums are fab, especially "God is a DJ". I've never heard a better tune about clubbing as a religious experience. But their trip-hop tunes are pretty boring, even though Maxi Jazz has a nice voice and some okay lyrics. That said, Rollo's solo trip-hop record (When We Were Young) is better than any Faithless album.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 11:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I've never heard a better tune about clubbing as a religious experience

then you've never heard ax-009

Filey Camp, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

i still like that Faithless track off The Beach soundtrack

blueski, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 11:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I still like "Insomnia".
