I think he is really bad on ALL levels.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:56 (nineteen years ago) link

why ?

anthony, Friday, 16 July 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

which levels are those?

i think to the extent that he is celebrated for mussying up stars, it's a fairly facile ploy, as mussying them up only contributes to their glamour in a certain way. they become even more remote and untouchable. but perhaps this is what richardson wants? i wouldn't presume to gauge his intentions from the press he gets. though his blurring the line between professional photography and pornography (or should i say between artifice and artlessness?) is not really terribly interesting to me, no more interesting than the general pornification of popular culture has become. though i guess his omnisexual aspect is mildly refreshing.

in general he is really tied up with that "celebrity photography" genre which while contributing nothing of any great value to the world, no doubt has its serious talents.

his photos of maggie gyllenhaal for nylon were amazingly lovely.

sorry for see-sawing.

what are your thoughts anthony?

the place where i'm working has a firewall so i can't get onto his site, but if someone can post the picture of maggie g. eating a slice of pizza i would be much obliged.

amateurist otm!!!

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I dont know...i am amazed at his versatility (sp)....str8 ahead pop star shit, no more or less distingusable then anything other, straight ahead porn (this is untrue, his porn is dirtier, more common, more retrograde then most, more bizzarre and more fanboyish (ie the batman seires). he out eaglestons eagleston smoetimes (in what he calls his found photographs), his shots of american street life are fascinating in a look at whats happening to the world kind of way and i admire/want to do that.

but i dont think he is as transgressive or interesting as he thinks he is, and i think the instamatic thing is a ploy for aesthetic symptahty(sp) just like using his fathers less then stable answering machine messages in his first gallery show was a ploy for emotional sympathy.

there is something that bothers me about him, but lots and lots of the photos are conceptually interesting, and concern themselves with the ethics of subject/artist that i have been thinking about for a few weeks.

And, let's clarify: you don't love women just because you have sex with them and like taking pictures of their ladyparts. I'm not saying that's all Richardson does, but "love" entails "respect" and also "the basic human decency to not use pictures of someone's lady parts for your photography show without her permission" and also "the basic human decency to not pressure a girl into giving you a hand job because OH MY GOD I WILL LITERALLY NOT BE ABLE TO PRESS THE FLASH BUTTON ON MY CAMERA UNLESS YOU TAKE NOTICE OF THE FACT THAT I HAVE NO PANTS ON. ALSO I'M A PROFESSIONAL."

cleggaeton (suzy), Monday, 17 May 2010 12:18 (thirteen years ago) link

haha ZING! and I liked this bit too

...I can already see the comments reading "You feminists are so uptight! Let a stranger manipulate you into doing weird things to him for once in your life, gosh!" (Even though I hope there aren't people who view this as a strictly feminist issue-it's a HUMAN issue. As in, this shouldn't be happening to any human, no matter their gender, though it's worsened by the fact that being male gave him more power.)

The Clegg Effect (Tracer Hand), Monday, 17 May 2010 13:33 (thirteen years ago) link

There is a vibe in fashion that only losers or The Worthy complain about the exploitation of people working professionally in the industry, the idea being that successful people have more important things (and people) to worry about. A commenter at Tavi's blog pointed out that such indignities would never befall Anna Wintour's daughter - which is kind of the point Tavi is trying to make, that this is a bully who preys on the powerless on those occasions he can.

xp when they show 'both sides of the story' and act like they have equal weight

just sayin, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:31 (nine years ago) link

isn't that a projection

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:36 (nine years ago) link

like, i see these two paragraphs next to each other:

But he seems either unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge the ways in which coercion can be unspoken and situational. A prominent photography agent identifies the potential for abuse. “Kate Moss wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick,” this person says. “Miley Cyrus wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick. H&M models weren’t asked to grab a hard dick. But these other girls, the 19-year-old girl from Whereverville, should be the one to say, ‘I don’t think this is a good idea’? These girls are told by agents how important he is, and then they show up and it’s a bait and switch. This guy and his friends are literally like, ‘Grab my boner.’ Is this girl going to say no? And go back to the village? That’s not a real choice. It’s a false choice.”

Someone who’s spoken with Richardson about the Kibosh project recalls him describing his feelings with some nuance. “He said, ‘I was really up front about the kind of work I was making, and it came from pain; it was an expression of the pain and trauma I’ve experienced in my life, and I’m not proud of it.’ ” In our conversations, Richardson was less introspective and more defensive. “I don’t have any regrets about the work at all,” he tells me, “but obviously I don’t ever want someone to feel like that. It was never my intention. But also, people do things, and then they have regrets, and that’s also nothing to do with me. Then don’t do pictures like that again … I’m okay with myself about everything, and that to me is the most important thing.”

It's the structure of 'both sides' but not the content. i mean, apparently a lot of people aren't reading it the way i did, so some of that has to fall on the writer—when I read the "Canyons" (lindsey lohan, james deen, etc.) piece in the new york times, it was a lot more dryly humorous. So maybe this piece is sloppier? But nonetheless, I read that last paragraph as pretty damning.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:40 (nine years ago) link

The article does raise some of the concerns but, in my view, makes the ideas that he has 'pushed his art into grey areas that some people are uncomfortable with' and 'he is a rapist and sexual predator' seem like equally defensible positions. Maybe it is projection, i don't know.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:49 (nine years ago) link

for an overly balanced article it seems to have made people universally grossed out by terry richardson, so... maybe it's not overly balanced?

tbf there were rumors ahead of time that NYmag was working on something 100% in his defense and what they actually ran was pretty warts and all beyond the quotes TR gave, and in a way it's more damning for that stuff to appear in a piece that he cooperated with and was interviewed for.
