The day before US Thanksgiving doldrums

Okay, so who here in the States is currently at work where nobody else is because they're all either fighting their way through the airport terminals or just not coming in at all? Half the library staff here seems to have conveniently disappeared.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And me, I'm not going home for Thanksgiving; it's always too much hassle. I've been invited to a friend's place, hurrah.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well we're all here but we're having a big lunch in the kitchen. I brought store-bought potato salad, am I sad or what?

I actually have work to do and am working, in between posting.

We're not going to any family things b/c it's just too much hassle. Thanksgiving is such a half-holiday. We are going to a friend's tomorrow were there will probably be more trees consumed than poultry. ahem.

Other than that a couple of shows are on order, I'm going to try and drag Hank to see Harry Potter and I'm going to clean out the fridge. yay four day weekends! (which means I won't being seeing you bunch till monday. pbb)

Samantha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I just got here, and figured it to be a dull day, however I already have a couple annoying requests...

Sean, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What's the big football game tomorrow then?

chris, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This is bullshit - our library is quiet, too. I don't know why they just don't close down on Wednesday as well, since most classes are cancelled today. And after all, we need a holiday to prepare for our holiday tomorrow - honestly, how can I work, obsessing as I am about all of the Italian food I'm going to feast on tomorrow? (None of that cranberry bullshit for me...)

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Damn, Kerry, that sounds like a great Thanksgiving! :-) Had I not gotten the invite, I would have floated over to Au Lac, veg Vietnamese cuisine of the gods, and feasted.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i am at work and i am DYING. campus is empty, yet here we are open. i should be sleeping. (i practically am.) we did get free pizza today though, but the multiple slices i ate are now contributing to my somnabulence.

jess, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

life can be a rytier. But lets getta attitude ! dude! lets not be so fan ceee. lats thanky wanky!

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm contributing to the general sense of emptiness by ditching class.

turner, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yippee!! The new director (the one who replaced scleroderma woman) came by and said we can all go home at 2 PM! What a rebel!

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

argh, I'm stuffed! The work pot luck lunch was a bountiful success. I helped myself to enchiladas, spaghetti and meatballs, fajitas, taco salad, queso, deviled eggs, guacamole, refried beans and even a little of my own pathetic potato salad so it would like someone liked it. For desert I had some cranberry jelly stuff, a tiny slice of apple pie and I'm saving a chocolate and peanut butter chip brownie for an afternoon snack. yum!

okay, nap time.

Samantha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And you're not sharing this fine bounty with us, Samantha. *cries*

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Crap, I'm probably going to have a boring, cold sandwich.

Sean, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have spent my pre-turket day sleeping in because I am SICK. Wahoo. Dealing with runny noses beats sitting in smoke-infested offices any day of the week (sorta). Here's hoping I stop running before tomorrow, lest I be banned (or, worse yet, ban myself) from any familial functions.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm at a relative's house. We got here yesterday and are leaving Saturday morning on the ten-hour drive. I'm bloated but happy because they've been feeding me nonstop (or at least leaving food on serving plates on all the tables and counters!). Mother, Aunt and I went shopping this morning and I finished buying Christmas presents for my friends (either I'm really fast or I don't have any), so half the day is gone, yay. It's nice to see family, but there's very little to say to them. Perhaps better than being at school, perhaps not.

Maria, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There is no need to drag me to see Harry Potter, unless you feed me any more of those brownies, then we might have to locate a wheelbarrow.

hank, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hank *speaks*! You know, sir, Samantha really LURVES you, she keeps saying so. It therefore must be true. :-)

I'm in Victoria right now with my cousin and her husband (we're taking a break; I'm checking e-mail and ILX; they're watching Westwing)... Nice thing is that this is the first year I'm all out avoiding a U.S. Thanksgiving.. (Canada's Thanksgiving was last month) (STICKIN' IT TO DA TURKEY!)

seven years pass...

So what are your plans?

Our director is letting us go at noon. I have some work to do today, and I'll me best to get it out. Such a classic phone-it-in day though.

We've already had the family thanksgiving so I'm relishing a long weekend with no obligations. Options on the agenda:

-a tailgate for the Texas/A&M game with fried turkeys and free beer

-writing a paper comparing Oedipus and Death of a Salesman for my boyfriend's English class (okay this is a must, not an option)

-knitting baby sweaters

-writing

-xmas shopping

-trying to drag someone to see Twilight again with me

-would like to put up the tree but a month away seems too early

ILx?

Are you at least getting turkey?

What kind of pies? I'm having xmas at my house for the first time this year (well just my brother and his family. The rest of my family has stopped celebrating any holidays at all.) Bringing out the best: tamales, banana pudding, and fudge.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Today I will be mostly writing a 15 page paper due tonight, baking cupcakes for thanksgiving, making a stew for dinner and packing. Ugh.

The last two are two of my faves. How is pecan pie the worst?? My mother-in-law has the best recipe. It's pretty much solid pecans rather than a top layer of nut with the rest being soft and treacly.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

lol do u guys know abt clear pie - its like pecan w/o the pecans - top w/cool whip!

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Pecan pie is just usually the higest in terms of fat and calories which obv means it's the best and most awesome!

Oh shit the supermarket. I have to go too. Maybe I should shower and go now because it's still early-ish.

Clear pie???

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:22 (fifteen years ago) link

should prob just hit the supermarket right now :/

Black Friday anyone? I hate being such a consumer but having four kiddos btw 3-9 to buy for makes me gift crazy. I want to be their Santa Claus. Also there's the grown kid who lives with me and keeps sending me e-mails about who will have various Xbox 360 crap on sale this weekend.

I truly dread hitting the stores this weekend. That might push my limits in terms of tolerating the mass of humanity.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

No way will I be shopping this weekend. I can't handle the crowds and craziness.

Tomorrow morning we have to drive to Long Island. I hope that most people will travel today and that if we leave early enough it won't be too bad traffic wise.

I approve of this use of work time.

I'm in awe of people who pull of the big dinner, especially by themselves. The first xmas after my grandmother passed away my aunt and I attempted to recreate her traditional dinner. It completely kicked our ass and I couldn't believe she managed to do it by herself every year.

My family has never had a together-holiday since. Maybe it's our fault b/c we f'ed up the fruit salad. :(

Today -- knocking off a slew of winter quarter prep work so I don't have to think about it at all later, taking advantage of another quiet day (as noted when I started this thread!), plus one last Trader Joe's visit for resupplies

Tomorrow -- dinner with friend Stripey and her family

Friday -- work again! (which means I don't have to work any other holidays and can finish up the rest of winter quarter prep work on an even quieter day) Then a party at a friend's place near campus right after work.

My routine in recent years has been to spend Thanksgiving with my gf's family and then Xmas with my own. My recently-brainwashed aunt (by marriage) brought her Trumpite new husband to the turkey day festivities last year (hosted by my cousin) and apparently has decided, counter to everyone else's preference, that an annual spectacle of instability is the best way to celebrate the holiday. So I'm only vicariously experiencing the doldrums of my otherwise sane family members.
