"this show is markedly worse than watching ACCESS HOLLYWOOD, etc."

god, are you kidding? this show isnt about celebrity worshop, its just a hilarious look at life as an actor and his freinds. i mean, from the point of view of turtle (someone who would be slaving away for a contractor if he wasnt freinds with vincent chase), why wouldnt you want to be involved in this world? shallow? sure, but fuck it, why not?

anyway, the real reason to watch the show is jeremy piven, who as agent ari is fucking hilarious, did anyone else see it tonight?

shes not E's girlfreind anymore, the bitch.

The best line of the night was Ari's
"I'd love to stay but its anal sex night at the Gold house, so if you'll excuse me, i have to go and punish my wife."

JD from CDepot, Monday, 13 June 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

i like this show alot, it's very much sex and the city for dudes (the hollywood stuff is a bit of a red herring). i'm kinda sad e's girl is probably gone for good now - i've had the hots for that chick since undeclared - and i was sorta disappointed with the second episode - the first set up the possibility that this season might deal with e maybe not being so great at his job and vinnie's career hitting a speedbump (when he was like 'the toys are nice but i don't need them' i thought 'BUT WHAT ABOUT TURTLE?').

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Great show. And it's getting better even. The characters are great, the acting is good and it's got pace to it. Drama has calf envy.

two weeks pass...
ok i downloaded and watched the first 4 eps of the second season this week. i noted that in ep 2 the opening scene music was amerie - 1 thing and in ep 4 it was that rihanna song. neither of those were big (or even released?) when this was filming (or during post-production unless post-production takes place much later than i think -- then again i know nothing about how this stuff works), so i guess they slip in current big hits shortly before airing? nice touch.

and yeah, as blount said (sharing another one of my thoughts in addition to the sitc comparison (not that i was the first to think of that, i'm sure)), this season everything cannot be as easy for vinnie or it'll be boring (as opposed to first season when that was the hook). and the end of ep 4 hints at that, although they might just hand-wave leo away at the start of the next ep. i hope not. i was pretty happy when the studio kicked them out of the mansion and they had to go looking for somewhere else -- i didn't even realize it was studio-owned (i didn't see every ep of season 1), i thought vinnie was already fuck-off rich but he's not, and the show's better for it.

Times article on Ari

i don't buy the author's contention that ari may be faithful to his wife. i can't remember a specific scene but isn't there something in the first season that disproves that?

""Entourage" represents so vast an improvement over HBO's "Sex and the City" that it makes that show seem, in retrospect, like nothing more than a one-note celebration of pluckiness, devised for a tweener reading level. By contrast, "Entourage" does not patronize its characters or its audience: it is a multilayered, adult and thoroughly funny show about various male fantasies of teamwork and individualism." !!! was never a big sitc fan myself (couldn't stand the 'articles' carrie would write/narrate *shudder*), but i never expected to read a graph like that from a name crit (is VIRGINIA HEFFERNAN a name crit? i don't read much tv criticism)

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:24 (eighteen years ago) link

that article is OTM. Say what you will about Sex in the city, there isnt a character on that show thats half as alive as Ari Gold. Entourage is great fun, but it also has the opportunity to be great Drama (even though Johnny Drama will never be great). Sex in the City, in the few episodes ive seen, never rises above a girl power yawn, no matter how many appletinis the girls consume.

JD from CDepot, Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I hate that binary "if you loved a show about women in the city, this show isn't for you! (thank god!)" aspect. And Ari definitely isn't faithful because last season there was the bit where he pissed off Eric for wanting the assistant and dropped that he had slept with other ones. But, Piven is no doubt the best thing about the show.

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:07 (eighteen years ago) link

that sounds right, except i guess it could be argued he was saying that for effect. i guess i have to admit the idea of ari being faithful really intrigues me. which case does that scene in ep 4 where he negotiates with wife for time at the playboy mansion give ammo to?

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:35 (eighteen years ago) link

i will probably watch ep 5 tonight

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:38 (eighteen years ago) link

also, He's impotent! I'm sure he doesnt cheat on her, any inclination of cheating that he gives should be seen as little more than macho posturing in front of vince.

Samantha! Samantha! Samantha!

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 7 July 2005 23:28 (eighteen years ago) link

of course, i thought about Samantha before i said that. shes the obvious choice to contend with jeremy piven's character, and maybe i cant disagree, for me its a matter of taste. Samantha is this "empowered" woman, for whom empowered sleeping around like a man and making just as much money (and in my opinion being a total bitch), but hey, good for her. if thats what people consider empowered, so be it. but Ari is something much more interesting; his character desperately tries to assume power and dominance in an industry run by fear and instability. His posturing reveals a tragi-comic flaw that, to me, is just thousands of times more entertaining.

(i realize as i write this all the episodes where we see the "softer" side of samantha. sure, its there, but i just dont believe it. oh well.)

JD from CDepot, Friday, 8 July 2005 02:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, I'm not 100% certain about what you take "alive" to mean, but in terms of a fully realized characters with nuance, I think Miranda and Steve blow away anyone and anything on Entourage.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 8 July 2005 03:27 (eighteen years ago) link

ep 5 was pretty good. (spoilers) emily!! wise move bringing her back. much better than eric's ex.

saget: slightly amusing, but not nearly vulgar enough for his reputation. which points to a problem in general for this show: it's on HBO but where're the goodies that's supposed to enable, eg full-frontal, drugs, really raunchy stuff. like when they sit around the pool with the hookers and saget brags about his colombian...WEED? c'mon!

JD from CDepot, Monday, 29 August 2005 04:38 (eighteen years ago) link

It's okay JD; unlike say, The Sopranos or Deadwood, spoilers don't really affect the enjoyment of watching Entourage.
That said, I thought this was one of the better episodes. Ari is BY FAR the most interesting plot to follow and the relationship with him and Lloyd just got super cooler.

"When your girlfriend was in the mailroom, she offered to blow me.
True story."

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 29 August 2005 05:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Entourage is a much more realistic portrayal of NYC males than SatC is of NYC women (or NY'ers period). for whatever that's worth.

This season's been great. The only things that haven't sat well with me; 1.) the women aren't written very well (like, at all) 2.) the 20-minute U2 performance from the SDCC ep 3.) not enough emily

Ari's definately the most interesting thing about the show, the build-up of this episode was bitchin.

sux2bu (Adrian Langston), Monday, 29 August 2005 06:52 (eighteen years ago) link

i was kinda surprised ari was able to be caught off guard quite like that, although maybe it was just his cockiness. a glint of that old alex droog shark in mcdowell's eyes glaring at ari after he wrote 'nothing!!!'. i liked at the end with ari's big concern being his wife and the scenes of them together. it'd be nice to see that relationship fleshed out a bit beyond the seesaw between 'she's spoiled'/'he's an asshole married to his job'. the women aren't really given alot to do on this show beyond either being frustrated with the boys or being amused by the boys. o and look very very good. i've heard people complain that it isn't vicious enough, it isn't cutting satire, etc. but that's one of the things that really appeals to me about it - cutting satire about hollywood is old hat by now. if entourage had followed the now standard player/swimming with sharks tone (which seriously is the basis of like eight different shows between hbo and ifc) the ari having the carpet pulled out from under his feet doesn't have nearly the 'holy shit' impact it had.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 29 August 2005 07:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Vincent's buddies may be NYC males, but Ari is dyed-in-the-wool LA.

This show is great.

Ari may be an asshole, but I felt sorry for him. It would be nice to see him rise back on top of his game rather than fade away.

I love watching the Queens boys much more than I originally thought I would. I even like Vinny Chase now. There's some depth to his character. But what I really enjoy more than anything is the bumbling sidekicks, Turtle and Calf Implants. They are hilarious!

Is this the second season now? The show got good really quick.

I hope it lasts at least 5 years because I can't get enough!

And just how funny is Johnny Drama? Kevin dillon in the role he was literally born to play.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:01 (eighteen years ago) link

The way that this is MOST like Sex in the City is that in SitC the men are written to be bumbling dunderheaded cliches and in Entourage the women are written to be bumbling dunderheaded cliches.

Q: How can you tell if a woman is unworthy in Entourage?
A: She's in Entourage.

This is the best show ever!!! I love Ari. He captures every scene. Drama is funny too. He is so ridiculous. Vinny Chase... great pick for the role... he's calm and cool, and, until the season finale, never got mad, or made his friends feel guilty for sponging off him. The only character I am not nuts about it Eric... hes ungrateful and to much of a dad... plus.. the actor... not really my favorite, but i love the rest of the cast

Todd Simonson, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 04:55 (eighteen years ago) link

turtle's def most fun to watch (after ari natch). it's like jerry ferrara's second gig ever.

HBO
A lot of the other guys pointed to you and said, the thing about Jerry is, the guy you see on screen, he's always smiling, he's a great guy, he's really easy to get along with. And he's the same guy that he is when you're just hanging out. Do people expect you to be like Turtle when they meet you?

Jerry
Oh, absolutely. I actually think people are a little disappointed [LAUGHS]. I mean I am very much like that guy in the sense that that I'm from New York, I have the same group of friends from when I was a kid, and if you're my good friend, there's nothing that I won't do for you. I'll do anything in the world. I'll die for you. But I'm different in that I'm not as outgoing or as outspoken as Turtle. I'm definitely way more shy than he is, especially with women. If I'm first meeting you, you'll think I'm just this shy, quiet kid. But once you get to know me, then the Turtle comes out.
