weak arms, tired muscles, no upper body strength

hello!

i think i am dying.

lately i have like 0% of my usual energy. my arms feel like two sticks with slack rubber bands stretched around them. (they also look surprisingly thin, which is not something you know i am prone to say.) i feel as if i have no upper body strength. there has been no real change to my diet/lifestyle. (i havent been drinking more, if anything less. i am still taking vitamins. i am still trying to hit all the food groups every day. i am still going to the gym on and off.) am i dying? should i go to the doctor? (i probably should, i know, but i only ask because i have no insurance so its not a decision i usually rush into.)

thanx in advance,
strongo
xoxo

the rest of me hasn't seem to change size either. just the arms/chest/shoulders region.

strongo, in the past i have periodically felt weak in my arm and leg muscles for no apparent reason, to the extent that just shampooing felt like i was exerting myself, and that carrying heavy objects made me feel tired and dizzy. i talked to a doctor about it, though, and she just suggested i needed to get more exercise. (which was true, anyway, since i was/am out of shape.) how severe is it for you?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:40 (8 years ago) Permalink

Do you have air conditioning? Do you drink enough water?

I'm being serious -- in the summer, I sometimes get dehydrated without realizing it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:41 (8 years ago) Permalink

it's pretty bad sometimes. i'll go to close my sliding glass door and the strength i thought was going to be there isn't. which is pretty bad! the thing which threw me off was that this only started AFTER i started going to the gym again.

xpost: yes, and i think so.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:42 (8 years ago) Permalink

well if it happened post-gym, you prob just strained your upper back. less intensity, more reps!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:47 (8 years ago) Permalink

no! more intensity, less reps!

haha i actually do slow weighlifting but i wouldn't recommend it to anybody with a strained back!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:51 (8 years ago) Permalink

if you've been working out with your arms then maybe it's a good thing! muscles get tired when exercised, it's how the flab goes away and real muscle growth begins!

at least that's what i remember from high school.

Whatever you do, don't google for the symptoms. You find that whatever symptoms you have, you'll have some form of cancer. This of course hasn't stopped me from googling. *sigh*

Have your blood tested. Maybe you just have a virus.

Nathalie OTM. WebMD is emphatically NOT your friend.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:01 (8 years ago) Permalink

WebMd can make you convince yourself you have the bubonic plague. Yeah, and don't ask your parents either. I mentioned to my mom that I had been really tired lately and she says "I was reading that pamphlet about West Nile Virus..."

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:03 (8 years ago) Permalink

No, seriously, about this time two years I was straight-up convinced that I had chronic fatigue syndrome -- I prob. even mentioned it somewhere on ILX -- and was already mentally preparing for my future as an invalid.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:06 (8 years ago) Permalink

I think having your blood tested is the best way to go. That's what I usually do and recommend people. It doesn't cost that much. If it turns out to be nothing, great, if it turns out to be *bad*, they can help you out. Do you have shortness of breath? Feeling really weak? *Swimming* (uh, I don't know how to translate this)? Cause it might be iron deficiency.

I had chronic fatigue syndrome

I like to believe I have this, but deep down I know I'm just a lazy fat bitch. ;-) (Sorry to those who have this syndrome...)

should i go to the doctor? (i probably should, i know, but i only ask because i have no insurance so its not a decision i usually rush into.)

I would wait a couple more weeks, but if you continue to feel this way you should probably see a doctor. Are there any free clinics near where you live? It's probably nothing, but you should have your blood checked in case there might be a problem. A couple of years back I was feeling this way all the time -- no energy, fatigue, etc. and it turned out to be an illness. So it might be better to be safe than sorry.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:11 (8 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, N. and N. are wise about the blood-checking.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:20 (8 years ago) Permalink

Sometimes I feel like this and realize it's because I'm fighting off a cold or virus without actually succumbing to it and getting symptoms.

Totally. I once had to go to the doctor for a bump. I was scared enough as it was, but she kept going on and on about various cancer treatment options I might look into. It turned out it was an ingrown hair!

Blood test is a smart idea. How are your sinuses? I find that sinus problems can give me strange feelings of weak-limbedness, but I don't think it's ever localized to my upper body. Also, I don't remember it affecting my chest.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:54 (8 years ago) Permalink

(In other words: it sounds nothing like my sinus related symptoms, but that's the filter through which I view all possible maldies.)

I always feel tired and weak. Like Jaymc, I too thought I had CFS at one point. I have found, though, if I get 8 hours of sleep, exercise, try to eliminate high GI carbs and dairy, I feel right as rain.

Of course I don't do this as much as I should and as a result feel like poo.

could really be mono - I just heard about two people who currently have it and NO, they do not even know one another. Blood work in order if not better in a couple of weeks. Feel better and REST!
