Meetups, drinks, meals, Mariners, shopping, gigs, etc.

All I've booked at this point is the flight. I'll figure out the hotel when I decide whether I'm going to an overnight trip away from the city.

I know Jaq has mentioned meeting up...anybody else?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 18 August 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

You should plan to get lunch at Salumi. They serve Tues-Fri, 11 - 4 only.

Jaq (who is not a balding Frenchman) (Jaq), Thursday, 18 August 2005 19:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Bah! Well I don't think I can make it up then.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 18 August 2005 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Double-bah! We could have a meetup of people who don't actually live there.

Jaq (who is not a balding Frenchman) (Jaq), Friday, 19 August 2005 00:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Since you're a baseball fan, you might check out Ebbets Field Flannels. They have a storefront down around in Pioneer Square.

Also, we have found the City Pass for Seattle to be fairly worth it, especially if you are into old planes and want to do the Space Needle. For a cheap but scenic boat ride, walk on to the Bainbridge Island ferry. When you get off on Bainbridge, take a short walk to the Streamliner Diner for a bite, then ride the ferry back to Seattle.

Jaq (who is not a balding Frenchman) (Jaq), Friday, 19 August 2005 00:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a little wiggle room (the big advantage of freelancing), and I believe I can change my flight without penalty before midnight tomorrow night. Would the next week (16th-23rd) be better for meetups?

...fooey, Mariners are on the road then.

Hmm.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 19 August 2005 00:54 (eighteen years ago) link

well, I'll be working + commuting so, I'm basically available after 7pm on weeknights at the earliest.

I'll be gone the weekend of the 10th and 11th unfortunately (I'll be in SF), but if you're into "pfreaky noise pfestivals", there's the Wooden Octopus Skull happening the 8th through 11th. Noggin, etc. Caroliner etc., Steve Stapleton of Nurse With Wound DJing, etc. I might be back in town by Sunday night to catch Steve Stapleton.. hmmmmm

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Either weekend's okay for us. I've got a small project on that side of the mountains now, so a business reason to head over and potential to be in Seattle on a weekday.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Wooden Octopus Skull looks interesting. I think I probably won't change the trip dates after all, to take adv. of the festival and the baseball, and because it would be a pain in the butt.

If I weren't to go on any trips out of the city, would I need to rent a car, or is Seattle a good city for the carless?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Seattle is an excellent city for the carless, imo. The public bus system is very good, and parking in the city is dear. And depending on how far out of the city you want to go, the bus system might be able to get you there. The city hotels also charge extra for parking.

Jaq (who is not a balding Frenchman) (Jaq), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

You only really need a car in Seattle if you have want to go out to Mt. Rainier or some of the forest areas to the east, north or south. If you get the fever for some mountains, you can always decide to Flexcar it for the day, anyway. But if you intend on spending even half your time in Seattle or more, it's definitely not worth the money to rent a car from the airport.

That said, by the time you get here, all the stuff I said about bus tunnels in my loooong post to gygax! will be obsolete, as they're closing the bus tunnels starting Sept 4th. What this means is: your buses will just end up on downtown surface streets instead.. there might be more traffic and a few more delays, but you won't have to take elevators or anything to get up to the street surface level... if you take the 194 or 1974 to downtown, you'll be on 3rd street. Depending on where you're staying, get off wherever is closest for you on 3rd.

donut floccinaucinihilipilification (donut), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Why the [$#@$#] are they closing the bus tunnels?!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not sure I could make it up either weekend, btw, so don't change on account of me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Why the [$#@$#] are they closing the bus tunnels?!

Retrofitting, light rail projects.. it'll be a while.

Granted, the only good thing about the bus tunnels were "oh cool! Bus tunnels". The only real function they served (IMHO) was to help relieve bus traffic on the surface streets, but on the flip, they usually just confused people who had to take buses down there.. especially visitors. The weirdly restricted bus tunnel hours didn't make things easier. ("Oh, we have bus tunnels, except after 7pm... and not on Sunday.. Sorry you missed your bus. Try 3rd st. next time! Good day!")

That said, I'm going to take a bus in the tunnels one last time in August before they are closed, because they just won't be the same once they're back up.. and who knows when that day will come.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay, I've got to get serious about a hotel or it'll cost both arms and both legs.

I'm looking at the Executive Pacific Plaza Hotel, 400 Spring St., but the book says the rooms aren't air conditioned. Will this be a problem mid-September? I may just book at the Days Inn Downtown at I-5, cheapish and a known quantity.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Nothing available at the Exec. Pacific Plaza. I got nervous and went ahead and booked at the Days Inn.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:35 (eighteen years ago) link

If it's the one on 7th Ave., that's a great location actually. It may not look "FAAAAH-BULOUS" immediately around it (although you could take a few steps across the street and dare dine at the Hurricane Cafe, which is open 24-hours, especially if you want that Juggaloes-starring-in-Twin-Peaks effect.), but you're right next to Belltown, right next to Seattle Center, and you're right next to Denny way, where a very short bus ride can take you east to Broadway in Capitol Hill.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:56 (eighteen years ago) link

That's the one. Cool, it seemed like a decent centrally located place. But Jesus, is it my imagination or is it harder to find a decent hotel room on a budget in Seattle than in SF or NYC? Is it the time of year or something?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Pretty much! You're almost guaranteed great weather between July and early September.. although there are budget places.. you just have to know about them. Also, there's not as many centrally located lodging places in Seattle as there are in SF and NYC, because, well, Seattle is smaller.. I'm personally bummed because I can't find a place near downtown Portland that's less than $100 a night now, for the same reason. :(

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Thing is, I don't know about the budget places, otherwise I would have told you earlier in the thread. I've only lived here.. never "stayed" here. :/

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, September is the MONTH OF FESTIVALS, for some reason. There's at least three semi-major things going on every weekend in September.. which might be why places are more pricey, too

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:09 (eighteen years ago) link

$100-$125/night is pretty much the average around downtown Seattle, regardless of the "season", from what we've found. We lived there for years and now come over once a quarter or so. We like to stay in places with kitchens, which can be limiting. That Days Inn is well located, like donut says. And the Hurc is classic :) Also, Caffe Minnies at 1st and Denny - 24 hour diner/hangover food.

For the ultra-budget minded, there's always the Green Tortoise Hostel or Hostelling International.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, the Mediterranean Inn isn't bad - it's on lower Queen Anne, so close to Seattle Center, but a bit farther from downtown and the market. It's across from Dick's, for excellent greasy fries and not horrible burgers.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:48 (eighteen years ago) link

apparently the Moore Theatre in downtown has $30 rooms. I can't tell you what the accomodations are like at all, though.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:51 (eighteen years ago) link

The Days Inn was $97/night + taxes (which amount to an 8th night)... I guess I'll consider myself lucky. Now to dope out a rough itinerary.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 11:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Donutski, when are you visiting?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

sigh.. I dunno. Probably not until October.

(OH, I forgot to tell you. I picked up Charlotte-Douglas airport cards for you, and, well, a certain ex roommate of yours, for very obvious reasons... Charlotte NC was my transfer point between Seattle and Raleigh/Durham.. RDU has no airport cards of their own, sadly.)

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm flying Northwest. What are my chances of getting screwed over by the Mechanics' Union strike?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 21:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Take this with a grain of comforting salt, but I read something in the Seattle Times yesterday that Northwest operations should be "normal" despite the strike. Then again, that's what Alaska Air said a year ago, and I've gotten delays on every flight by them for the last year. But I got to my destinations, at least, and not too incredibly late. So, I'd just expect delays, the usual, to be on the safe side.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Oy. Check your options for all other airlines flying from Memphis to Seattle. Print out a list of their flight numbers if possible and have it ready. At the first sign of trouble, get thee to a Northwest rep with your handy list and start requesting they put you on another airline. They'll only do this if they actually cancel your flight.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Charlotte/Seattle seems to be a popular hub for U.S. Airways (who I only flew with once, but I thought they were great.). I'm guessing, worst case scenario, you could hop on a quick flight to Charlotte, and connect via U.S. Airways from there. Again, worst case scenario.. but there's at least one option.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Charlotte/Douglas!!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:54 (eighteen years ago) link

On the bright side, I'm flying nonstop both ways, so I don't have to worry about a delay causing me to miss a connecting flight.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 23:31 (eighteen years ago) link

So, FAP on 9/9 or 9/10 anyone?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I wish, but I'm on an early flight to SF the morning of the 10th, so that kills both the 9th and 10th for me.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah yeah yeah! I may or may not need extra pints depending on how NWA treats me in transit.

This is the most unplanned trip I've ever taken, I think. I'm really just going to be flying in and figuring out things from there, although I am planning to show up for the Stapleton DJ set on Sunday. Most of my brain cells are given over to trying to decide whether I want to buy an iPod in time to take with me.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh say yes to the iPod! Or some such device. And some noise-cancelling headphones too.

Are you for or against sushi?

And bring a jacket/sweater - it was chilly in the evenings this past weekend (in the 50s).

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I am completely pro-sushi. A friend and I went out and stuffed ourselves full of sushi and Belgian beer in Atlanta Friday night — he's been deprived because his wife's pregnant and they've been avoiding the sushi places. I had sea urchin for the first time.

I'm excited about going somewhere cool for a week. If it's down into the 50s, I may go streaking. (Not.)

I don't know where the milk shakes and cows thing came from. That sounds boring even for me.

I plan to be at the Baltic Room Sunday night.

Dr. Morbius, if you were going to be in Seattle on the 4th, you could watch the municipal fireworks on Lake Union at Gasworks park, or watch the display the Gates' put on out on Lake Washington from Madrona park. Or, if you are up on Capitol Hill with the non-cologned gay men, you could catch glimpses of both.

late June/early July = Me in Vancouver for major NoMeansNo CD Release party FAP in combination with possible road-tripping CaliLXorz FAP in Vancouver *and* Seattle.. and fuck yeah, Canada Day (July 1st) *and* July 4th at Lake Union off Westlake Ave. = parteeeeeeeeeee!

Actually the baseball convention hotel (Madison & 5th) sold out way early... They gave us 3 spillover options, so I just have to decide whether I want to stay 2 blocks away for $100/night, or stay at Silver Cloud-Broadway 10 blocks away for $140, but have easier access to the aforementioned Pine-Pike Corridor of Men With(out) Cologne.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, btw - I checked with a few sources re: Men w(/o) cologne, and was told to recommend the DoubleHeader Tavern, which apparently is not just baseball themed. It's down in Pioneer Square. Sadly, Timberline Spirits (which was on Yale) has closed. It was generally full of robust, cologne-free men and I thought it a good bet for you. Alas.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Silver Clouds are nice, comfortable hotels - you might want to bear in mind that the 10 blocks from Madison and 5th will be uphill to the hotel, but there are buses. It's not the steepest part of the regrade, but a definite incline.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:02 (eighteen years ago) link

my parents like the one in the U district, on the far side of U Village (and right by the Burke-Gilman trail), but that might be a bit too suburban in character and far-flung for the carless

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm assuming Morbius lives in NYC? If so, then I don't think a few blocks of an incline is going to be a deterrant, especially given how much lighter and more comfortable Seattle weather will be like in late June compared to NYC in late June.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Then again, I regularly walk up and down Queen Anne Hill, some parts of which have to be at a 40 degree incline... so maybe I'm not the best person with which to empathize.. heh heh.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, what I remember of walking around in NYC, it was f.l.a.t. Queen Anne hill is 456 feet of near vertical, though the regrade cut on Denny is more steep.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Fuck a Queen Anne Hill slope. That is horrible stuff.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 06:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Well anyway, the Broadway incline to Silver Cloud isn't anywhere near Queen Anne Hill type slopes, Morbius... and it won't be 90% humidity here.

No Chris, I'm taking things sequentially, feel free to recommend the non-twink Portland stuff. :)

Jeez, the baseball con basics are more expensive than last year ... I may stay downtown just for convenience, and hike it to the DoubleHeader, Eagle etc. (yes I'm in NYC, and I hike the hills of SF fairly easily when I go.

Definitely around for a September meet up - I head back to AL on 9/27 though and might have a weekend free for possible MS or Atlanta shenanigans.

One insane idea I had was going to Seattle for one of the King Crimson shows. Trip could involve going to the San Jose (Morgan Hill) area to meet up with my boss (travel expense writeoff!) -- she has a ton of small office chores and workflow issues due to being a semi-Luddite with a 12-year-old laptop.

I'm gonna be in Seattle on and off for a few weeks leading up to then, I guarantee drink-uppening getting organised if you do go

Welp, looks like this may be off. The work trip is pushed back to next Feb. or March, at least, and my relaxed September is getting busier every hour.

Ah well. Spring is nice and maybe you could be here for the EMP pop conference.
