jude law has cashed his cheque and will never be a star. you'd think sienna would sink with him, but it seems she may not. i think it'd be awesome if she out-famoused him. but i have never actually seen her act, if in fact she has done such a thing.

reactions, etc?

Don't even know what she looks like

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:45 (eighteen years ago) link

She mostly does west end plays for relatively unknown writers as opposed to tv and film work.

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Wasn't she in a Shakespeare lately? He's a fairly well known writer I believe

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:48 (eighteen years ago) link

she was in as you like it recently and she is doing a caberet show of casanova.... sounds intriguing

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:49 (eighteen years ago) link

ps i did so say MOSTLY not always. she is beggining to do more and more work for more well known writers and getting bits of tv/film work throw her way.

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Are you her agent?

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:53 (eighteen years ago) link

it's settled. fuck phds, i will write a play for her.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't seen any theatre with her in it yet apart from the narrative played out in the collective national gossip consciousness (boak) but it strikes me that she's 'winning' and JL has been made to look like a prat. I did love how the whole slutty nanny thing panned out to be a honeytrap set by her employer, Sadie Frost.

£20 anyone night with the lovely sienna?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:56 (eighteen years ago) link

(well not quite the night...)

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:56 (eighteen years ago) link

she's set a brilliant career path for katie holmes, i think--- very attractive girl, known by specific audiences (layer cake v. dawson's creek), whirlwind romance with guy older than her and MUCH more famous, announcement of engagement, on the covers of all the magazines (including the glossies), then a breakup that leads to even more media attention than the relationship itself (i think this'll happen within 18 months for tom and katie).

i haven't seen any evidence that sienna has any talent, but i don't think the UK tabloids care about that. the fact that she's known in the US now is significant, i think. she's played the situation very cleverly, and it'll be itneresting to see whether she just disappears after a while or not.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:01 (eighteen years ago) link

she's doing an indiewood film abt the factory iirc--ie slightly indie, slightly boho--to launch herself into hollywood.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Doesn't she have a role in Casanova? I seem to recall so.

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, the film Casanova, not the cabaret show. Or is that one and the same thing?

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not sure if I buy the bit about Jude Law's career being fucked in any way - I think some major studios will back off from casting him as a lead since he doesn't seem to be much of a draw as a leading man, but I don't think that would stop indie studios from casting him that way, and on top of that, he's a good actor who nails a particular archetype that is useful in a great many stories. Jude Law isn't going anywhere. Sienna Miller is virtually unknown in the US outside the context of celebrity magazines.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:54 (eighteen years ago) link

like colin farrell, law is another failed star, totally ubiquitous and given too many big roles too quickly. he was ok early on, i guess, but has a terrible american accent and was really nothingy in 'closer' and 'cold mountain'. the one studio picture he was notable in was 'road to perdition'.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:57 (eighteen years ago) link

he's superb in Talented Mr Ripley, and good in Existenz, the American accent isn't the prob, i think it's more that despite his 'good looks' he's much better at playing shits or dopes than conventional romantic leads

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:14 (eighteen years ago) link

He's best playing those pseudo-gay borderline unlikeable characters. Talented Mr. Ripley and Gattaca would be key. I most recently saw him in Closer and Huckabees where he did fairly well, but it always seems like somewhat of a put-on when he's cast as a normal guy or someone nice. Wait, he was a jerk in Huckabees and cheated in Closer...

Jude Law, effete jerk. As for Sienna Miller, the somewhat obnoxious crowd that goes for all the imported british crime stuff like Guy Ritchie's movies, etc, has now seen Layer Cake where she had more scenes removing clothing than she had lines, so I'm sure she has at least somewhat of a fanbase.

DUD. Man I hate that self-righteous bitch, she is pretty sure but can't dress for shit and is a mediocre actress. You know what her and Keira Knightley can leave this world very soon thanks.

VeronaInTheClub, Sunday, 22 June 2008 09:38 (fifteen years ago) link

self-righteous?

banriquit, Sunday, 22 June 2008 09:43 (fifteen years ago) link

was gonna to a keira vs sienna smash-off thread but it lookss like i already did.

banriquit, Sunday, 22 June 2008 09:43 (fifteen years ago) link

It's just occurred to me that I have never actually seen her act. In anything.

Sienna seems to be one of those women who has attained iconic status just through sheer ubiquity, rather than through actually being an icon.

Matt DC, Sunday, 22 June 2008 11:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Sienna = venal west London type who powers on through overentitlement, already has venal cafe society parents to learn her steez from. Do you really need to see her act in anything? She's in parties, it's in the can.

Kiera = seems basically decent, does own shopping, parents character actor/screenwriter. See her more like a skinny Kate Winslet in terms of where she's at.

suzy, Sunday, 22 June 2008 11:25 (fifteen years ago) link

**also Sienna has dual passports so easier for her to work the US than other actresses.

oh well.

banriquit, Sunday, 22 June 2008 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

to make it clear: i have not yet attempted to write a play (or novel). though in an unguarded moment i told man-about-town louis jagger what book i intend to adapt as a film. (sienna and keira are welcome to audition -- it's about posh folk in the late 1920s/30s.)

otherwise, yeah.

banriquit, Sunday, 22 June 2008 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

she is playing maid marian in ridley scott's apparently fascistic remake of robin hood, opposite russell crowe as the good-guy sheriff and (probably) christian bale as the evil hoodlum. so basically an american gangster prequel.

Simon H., Sunday, 22 June 2008 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link
