The Colbert Report starts on monday.

Is he going to be able to pull this off for an extended period?

At the very least, he has given me a new catchphrase when I spell my surname over the phone.

(starts next week, actually.)

The Daily Show certainly seems to be floundering finding a replacement. They had the unfunny Rob Corddry's unfunnier little bro on the other night!

I liked Corddry's brother, but then again, i like rob corddry, whom his brother apes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 10 October 2005 21:54 (eighteen years ago) link

The replacements have been somewhat awful, yes. Dan Bakkedahl was easily the worst, though.

I like Corddry (R) though, although his Plame skit was, well, douchey.

Cobert by himself was pretty funny, but it didn't seem like he could carry the show by himself. then he interviewed Stone Phillips and the show got HILARIOUS

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 07:01 (eighteen years ago) link

It's different from the Daily Show. Colbert never breaks character, so there's no Stewart to play the straight man, leaving that role entirely to the guest.
Then again, Colbert's character is funny as hell, so it might work out, it's too early to tell.

naus (Robert T), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 08:06 (eighteen years ago) link

i wish i could see this show.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 10:23 (eighteen years ago) link

That was really good. I'd like to have a transcript of that "feeling vs. knowing" bit at the beginning — it was funny, but also creepy as hell.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought it worked out pretty for a first episode, but I'm already a huge fan of Colbert. I'm sure they'll be working this out for a few months before they nail it, but it's not far off the mark right now. Jon Stewart took a few months to really kick in when he started on The Daily Show too.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:44 (eighteen years ago) link

It's great how they drop the t in "Report" so that it's pronounced like his name.

Also, AaronK: BitTorrent.

It's great how they drop the t in "Report" so that it's pronounced like his name.

Stone Phillips was great!

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:24 (eighteen years ago) link

The CNN.com article about the show made a HUGE deal about the dropped 'T'; I don't think it was intended to be subtle.

I was playing WoW so I wasn't playing close attention but there were multiple points where I hollered with laughter. Also, who knew Stone Phillips was so funny????

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

The Stone Phillips interview was hilarious, but I wonder how many other guests he's going to be able to find who can play along as well. Good start, though.

How long until Bill O'Reilly seethes with rage about being parodied?

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:22 (eighteen years ago) link

O'Reilly is going to be the guest on The Daily Show tonight, so maybe not too long.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll be happier when they stop talking about how it was the first episode, and Colbert has done his "enunciation exercises with gravitas" schtick before, but there was a lot of funny hidden away and it was nice. But it might be too much Colbert -- it's missing the obvious human connection that Stewart can give.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Eh, at least with this approach any ass-kissing towards right wing interviewees will be funny instead of infuriating (not looking forward to another fawning interview with O'Reilly tonight).

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:31 (eighteen years ago) link

but colbert enunciates so beautifully! i'll never get tired of hearing someone speak well.

Format-wise, it sounds more Jiminy Glick than the Daily Show.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

"You're the folks who say, Something's got to be done. Well, you're doing something - you're. watching. t.v. And on this show, your voice will be heard. In the form of my voice."

I like that he's staying in character but NOT in that Jiminy Glick way, god no. It makes things like the interaction btwn the stage manager and Colbert pretty great, yet the viewer doesn't feel left out of the joke. A weird balance of laughing at and laughing with.

haha, "babies", yes - xpost

too american for me, sorry. and as i'm watching stuff i work i tend to listen rather than actually watch.

hopefully john oliver will be back soon (but only 20 minutes per week) and larry wilmore will prove decent.

um, hard to explain. was more the format than the content.

the setup i didn't like, the quiz show aspect: 3 comedians (identified by their twitter handles rather than their names) making jokes about kid rock. the baying audience (mostly this). the whole trawling the internet for content thing.

koogs, Thursday, 8 January 2015 09:54 (nine years ago) link

@midnight is so horrible even though I often like the comedians on it

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 15:01 (nine years ago) link

It's basically just the show version of browsing the front page of reddit with comedians, but I find it pretty harmless. For the record the comedians are introduced by their actual name, too.

Evan, Thursday, 8 January 2015 15:08 (nine years ago) link

it's entertaining and basically has an infinite amount of content. one episode I saw reunited everyone from The State, which was awesome. one had Jay & Silent Bob on it, which was not. I agree the completely arbitrary quiz show format is kinda dumb

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Thursday, 8 January 2015 15:29 (nine years ago) link

basically watch any episode with Ron Funches

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Thursday, 8 January 2015 15:29 (nine years ago) link

agree with sufjan, they have a lot of good guests, but the format is somewhat irredeemable. typical comedy central setup, honestly

Nhex, Thursday, 8 January 2015 15:29 (nine years ago) link

It's basically just the show version of browsing the front page of reddit with comedians,

i have never watched this show but if forced to guess what it was like this would have been my exact answer

gr8080, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:10 (nine years ago) link

For people who don't look at reddit ever, but DO listen to a bunch of these comedians making the rounds on various podcasts, @midnight just seems like an extension of that.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:14 (nine years ago) link

that's otm and the reddit thing is fair too except for the implied negative. it is a fun show. the comedy 'quiz' format is p well established in the UK but maybe less familiar to others. i think you learn not to expect too much outside of some chuckles.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:18 (nine years ago) link

I don't have any problem with it really besides that some episodes can be duds depending on the guests. It's a much better alternative than The Jeselnik Offensive bullshit that I'm sure only existed as an experiment to figure out what makes Tosh.0 popular then do more of that. Which... I guess @midnight also is but in a different way.

Evan, Thursday, 8 January 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

It just bothers me that the comedians give canned answers in a stupid fake talkshow environment that's supposed to look spontaneous. I also don't like that nerdist dude's nerd reference dropping persona.

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:30 (nine years ago) link

persona is basically Larry the IT Guy

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link

tbf Hardwick has been in the nerd game for sometime now

Nhex, Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:33 (nine years ago) link

I think there's a difference between "canned answers" and pulling jokes from your own repertoire and retrofitting them for the topic at hand. I'm not gonna go to the mat for @midnight—sometimes I don't care if I watch it or if I miss it either—but it's the best show CC has developed for that time of night since Colbert started.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:39 (nine years ago) link

yeah "canned answer" is a misnomer, but the design of the show, where prepared jokes are made to seem spontaneous, treats the viewer like he's an idiot.

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

I don't think the jokes are as prepared as you think they are. These men and women are pretty comically nimble by definition.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:43 (nine years ago) link

maybe you're right. maybe they do second takes of jokes and that makes them seem prepared to me. I also don't doubt that hardwick is authentically nerd joel mchale. but nerd joel mchale's only method for establishing that he is nerd joel mchale seems to be dropping references to bits of nerdy culture. and that's just an annoying way to behave.

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:45 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, Hardwick runs an empire called Nerdist, hosts after-shows about Walking Dead, and maybe some other things, but he doesn't really code as "nerd" to me. He's basically the normal guy version of Ryan Seacrest.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:50 (nine years ago) link

Wilmore's Nightly Show ads are getting funnier all the time, though. Getting psyched for that show to start.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:55 (nine years ago) link

I used to find Hardwick incredibly annoying, but I guess a couple seasons of The Talking Dead have softened him up for me. That said I can still see why his persona would be irritating. Just remember we still live in a world where The Big Bang Theory is the most successful sitcom...

Nhex, Thursday, 8 January 2015 18:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah...*hangs head down low*

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 18:06 (nine years ago) link

Is there any other way to prove yourself a legit nerd in nerdy culture BESIDES dropping references?

Evan, Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:14 (nine years ago) link

yes, you make something new that nerds like.

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:44 (nine years ago) link

I understand it's nagl to police who can be a nerd. I don't even identify as a nerd. But if you try to make money by appealing to a 'nerd audience' you should be making something new that speaks to that audience, rather than just making references to that audience's canon. You can drop some references while having a conversation with some nerds and that is fine because you aren't selling them anything.

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:57 (nine years ago) link

Hardwick's personality is causes a wide range of reactions. I generally dig much of what he does, but his style is so distinctive it can be easily mocked.

I really enjoyed his interview with Andrea Romano, someone I believe never gets enough credit for what she was able to achieve:

http://www.nerdist.com/pepisode/nerdist-podcast-andrea-romano

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Thursday, 8 January 2015 20:59 (nine years ago) link

Hardwick is probably pulled by two different sides of nerddom, one being comics/sci-fi and the other one being standup/comedy (the latter has a very devoted, judgmental and intense fanbase as well).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 January 2015 21:04 (nine years ago) link

You really don't think he's authentic? I never suspected it was an act.

Evan, Friday, 9 January 2015 00:51 (nine years ago) link

I guess this kinda explains it all

I knew that I had two choices: I could continue living the way I was living and die pickled and unemployed, or make sweeping changes with the hope of salvaging my life. It occurred to me that I had arrogantly banished all the nerd qualities that defined me as a youth. I distinctly remembered that I once had the ability to focus intensely on many things. Programming computers, winning chess tournaments, playing videogames, collecting action figures, Dungeons & Dragon-ing, ruining the bell curve in Latin class. I needed to reconnect with that past and find a way to harness those nerd powers to turn my life around. They had to be useful for something other than frightening girls away by deconstructing the character of Tron as a Christ figure.

I think I sense this desperation in each reference and that is what puts me off.

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 9 January 2015 01:59 (nine years ago) link
