At what age did you start drinking?

The first time I got drunk was New Years Eve before 1994, I was 14 then. A bottle of some awful mint chocolate liquor. 14 may sound young, but I think that was about the average amongst working class kids in Helsinki. My friends had already started boozing the previous summer, so I was a bit late to catch up. For the next six months or so we drank all sorts of fruit and candy flavoured liquors, and often ended up vomiting. Then we moved to beer, which tasted awful at first, but once we got to to the taste of it, it was probably a wiser choice, because the drunkenness came smoother and there was less overdoing it and throwing up. When I was 15 or so my mum started buying booze for me, I guess she thought I would get it anyway, and she also had enough trust for me, since I never did any really stupid shit while drunk. Never got taken home by the cops or stuff like that. I didn't have a fake ID so I only started visiting bars regularly when I was about 17.

12 or 13, from the liquor cabinet. didn't really know what I was doing. I didn't really do this again until I was 17 or so, and then I had a pretty good idea of what I was doing.

18 or 19, I suppose. College freshman + life wasn't going so great = me getting shitfaced on more than one occasion.

16. Drank Diamond White alternated with Archers and lemonade for about two years before realising the error of my ways. Fortunately, I could never afford to drink enough to get as violently ill as I probably deserved to.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess I started drinking when I was 15 or so - but that was maybe a 40oz once every couple months. I didn't start drinking somewhat regularly until I was 18, but since age 21 or so, it's been about 4+ drinks a night/5-6 nights a week, which probably is unhealthy. I'm 25 now.

Odd bottle of cheap wicked strength cider at 13.
Cheap wine at weekends from 14-15, with occasional vodka.
Pubbing and clubbing from 16 onwards. I was drunk more often at 16 than I am now.

I think 14 or 15, I was working at a bakers in the summer holidays making (what seemed to me by the standards of that age) an absolute fortune. So I spent some of it on beer (for some reason our tiny cornsih co-op sold only decent-ish lager Budvar, Urquell etc). Never went through the cider / weird fruit flavoured shit phase, which I attribute to mum and dad''s enlightened habit of letting me and my brother have a glass of wine with meals, and the odd beer at barbecues. Cider in the park never really appealed. I also looked pretty old for my age so before too much longer it was the pub and GUINNESS.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Uh, I must have been about 14 or 15 I think. We would concoct illicit cocktails from anything we found in our parents' cabinet. Of course these were undrinkable - especially if Baileys was involved because it would go fluffy in the bottle we would put it in. But then, alcohol to us WAS undrinkable and it all tasted disgusting. It would take an average of a week to sneak around and organise our boozing and then come Friday we'd go to indie nights and sip these outside before going in. So long as we weren't so inebriated the bouncers eouldn't let us in.

First time I had anything to drink at all: 17, shortly after entering college. Had no desire to drink before then, never understood the fuss. First time actually drunk: just shy of my 20th birthday, at a pub in Edinburgh, on two glasses of red wine and two Guinnesses. I knew I was drunk because the pub band playing the Proclaimers' "500 Miles" sounded like the best thing in the world.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I spent all disposable income on clothes and records and tickets to gigs for a long time, so my alcohol consumption before age 21 is negligible, apart from:

Trying a nip of some really old, nice port; my friends drank the whole bottle and were sick.
Pleasant buzz on tequila with same friends, friends drank most of bottle and were sick again.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:50 (eighteen years ago) link

First time was 14 (the SHAME).

Went to 'the shows', a fairground that appeared for three weeks on the moor near my house every August.

Drank Pulse cider and this awful MD-esque concoction called Fruits Unlimited.

I developed a God awful crush of shame on a 30 year old one-legged Waltzer operator from Yorkshire and had to be dragged away from him by my concerned friends. Dear dear.

I didn't get caught that night, sneaked home, mum was working and my gran was knitting. Spent the night discreetly vomiting.

Those were the days - drunk by eight o clock, sick at nine, hangover abating by the time I had to go home.

I can't remember, but it was probably when I was about 15 or 16. By the time I was doing my A-levels, we'd regularly sneak off to the pub at lunchtime and have a pint or two.

started going to the pub aged 15 -- ten years ago almost to the day. but started drinking probably a while before that, on holiday and things like that. first time i was definitely drunk was summer 1994, on holiday in wales, aged 13.

'the shows'! we had these too. i was never allowed to go, but one year i did. glass of wine with lunch or dinner on sundays or on holiday or a beer or two after coming back from the beach from about 11/12, glass of wine with dinner more often from 13/14, champagne whenever there was any. the occasional escapade with that awful 20/20 stuff. the first time i got horribly drunk was 16, after a disastrous english oral exam on 'sons & lovers'. we all did appallingly (one friend went off on one about how when paul (?) was walking his mum up the hill, he was actually having sex with her... i didn't say anything quite so outlandish) so we went and bought some horrid cheap shit vodka and really cheap shit orange "drink" (to this day i think we would have fared better if we'd spent an extra $5 and got actual juice), sat on the roof and hammered it. woke up at 6am the next day in my own bed but wearing different clothes and with my wardrobe moved outside the room to the corridor.

Got some sly pints in when I started going to crappy Local Band gigs at 14. Went to Reading 95 aged 15 and threw up in some rammed pub in town on the Thursday night. The first and so far only wedding reception I've been to, aged 16, saw me drink nine pints and throw up out the window of the taxi the whole 20-mile drive home. Adjusting the figures for age and experience, this is probably my best drinking performance ever. And it goes on like this, pretty much

drinking age, in the US, is 3 older than in the UK

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 January 2006 11:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but since most people start drinking underage anyway, I wonder if the legal drinking age has some effect on how young start to drink? I think it has more to do with drinking culture, i.e. is it considered cool or even normal for teens to drink (this is why I mentioned my working class background, because I assume working class folks start drinking earlier than upper class people, and alcohol consumption is considered more normal). Of course it is possible that the legal age limit is based on (or influenced by) the drinking culture.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:04 (eighteen years ago) link

"how young you start to drink"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:05 (eighteen years ago) link

It's the same as smoking really. Young teenagers want to try it partly because they're forbidden to whereas adults are doing it, and there's that 'coolness' or 'rebellion' aspect again.

Nobody especially enjoyed smoking or drinking (beer and heavier spirits at least) the first times they tried them did they?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but since most people start drinking underage anyway, I wonder if the legal drinking age has some effect on how young start to drink?

it does, because to buy drink you have to pretend to be older than you are. so a 15-year-old *might* *just* be able to pass for 18, but 21 is a stretch.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:17 (eighteen years ago) link

i didn't enjoy cigs until i actually learned to inhale the fuckers, but i always liked drink.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's true. Though when I was teen, we rarely bought the booze ourselves, it was always someone's big sister/brother or mom or something. The pubs came into the picture only a couple of years after we'd started drinking.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't like spirits at first, they made me feel sick, but alaways like beer. Perhaps because I'd been introduced to the taste a bit by drinking shandy.

Loved cigarettes straight away, from the first one. Which kind of puts the lie to the old "you only enjoy cigarettes because you're addicted to them" line. I was really anti-smoking until then because I thought people only smoked to look cool. Then my best mate started smoking at 15, and we were sitting in the pub one afternoon and I think I was asking him why he smoked, does it actually do anything, etc, and I tried one just to see...

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess at the age of 12 I first bought booze for myself but my parents had always been fairly liberal as far as small glasses of wine and beer before then. I got a taste for guinness and ale fairly early on and started early enough to avoid the mid 90s tidal wave of alcopops.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:37 (eighteen years ago) link

how did you 'pass', aged 12?!

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I have been about this tall and stocky since about that age. However first drinking experiences were in france and through a very compliant off licence.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

When I was 6 or 7 my grand father used to give me the odd glass of wine. I didn't really enjoy it but it was fun acting like an adult and all. I really started drinking around 15 or so I guess. It's actually quite easy to go and buy booze in France when you're under age, as almost all the stores opened till midnight or so don't really give a damn as long as you buy something. Same for bars, I've rarely seen them ask for your ID, but that's understandable as to drink beer and wine in a bar you just have to be 16 so it's quite easy to pass.

Jibé (Jibé), Thursday, 19 January 2006 13:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I have always loved to drink. Can't remember the first time I was drunk but, according to family legend, I spent one Christmas Day in a stupor having got up early and polished off what was left lying in people's glasses from the night before's party. I was five. There are numerous photos of me supping from my Dad's pint pot in beer gardens on family holidays from then on. By 12-13, I was regularly raiding the drinks cabinet for sherry and port. By 15-16 drinking to get drunk a couple of times a week. I used to save up my school lunch money to spend on booze at weekends. I now drink between 60 and 80 units a week.

Same here. I took LSD before I ever got drunk or got high on pot (though not strictly before I drank). Only took it once though and now I just have too many layers of psychological damage to consider taking it again.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:51 (eighteen years ago) link

LSD delayed the start of my drinking career until I was 22. My then girlfriend was terrified about what might happen if her glass were ever empty when she was tripping, and she passed the fear onto me. So, we'd order another beer when the first was half gone, as a safety net. Bizarrely, our drink of choice was Special Export, because "you could sail the world over, and never find a better beer". Once I discovered Guinness, things got a lot better.

I started drinking when I was 15, myself and a mate got some bottles of heineken one xmas eve and we drank them at the football pitch late in the night. Not long after, I started going to school discos and we used to drink before we got in. We couldnt always get drink from off-licences or get served in pubs so we would often have to depend on vile concoctions (if there was only a little vodka, throw some whiskey in there and maybe a bit of coke or orange for a mixer like) of whatever we could get from our parents drinks cabinet. Puking was usually the outcome but at least you'd get a buzz.

I never was drunk at school although I remember one of my classmates passed around a plastic bottle of poitin during science class and we all took a few sips when the teachers back was turned.

My stepdad used to knock back at least 20 odd pints of bitter and countless brandies on an average day-sesh. He nearly died of pneumonia about 10 years ago and got told he'd be dead soonish if he didn't change his ways. He is in his early 70's now and still has 3 or 4 beers when he goes to the casino, or The Funhouse as he calls it. Most other people I knew who used to drink as hard as he did are in the ground - including one who died in his late 30's and another in his 40's. Some people are maybe lucky or their organs can take more of a pounding than others. I have this peasant superstition type belief that a good diet might help - disclaimer - it is probably bollocks!

Going back a ways, we totally drank at school. Irish coffee beforehand, cokes-with-vodka during the day, and excursions to the parking lot for peach schnapps (!) were commonplace. We even found a tunnel underneath the school, nicknamed the "bomb shelter" - for all we knew that is in fact what it was intended for - and day-drank within it.

In fact it was in this school that I heard a particularly elegant phrase about drinking, one that stays with me to this day. One of my cool older sister's cool friends had a 7-11 Big Gulp cup with her on the way to Latin class (klassy!). She was asked if it was Diet Coke, and she said, "Yes, but it's been doctored." Beat. "It's been doctored, and now I'm nursing it."

At the time, this turned me inside out with longing and envy. In retrospect it was actually pretty commonplace, probably not very original, and indicative of people whose lives were not as together as they seemed. But at the time....
