i get them confused.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 09:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I pick Alex Cox.

For Repo man, For inspiring John's "Album" concept before pissing him off with "Sid and Nancy".

Has Julian Temple made a film that was an unqualified success? (not necessarily a big box office one).

I liked "Earth girls are easy" but I wouldn't call it a "total success..."

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 09:40 (eighteen years ago) link

The 14-minute video for Blue Jean is the high point of Temple's career.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:57 (eighteen years ago) link

is that sir mick of jagger's work?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Both Cox and Temple do have an excellent habit of including Ed Tudor Pole in their films whenever possible though, which should be encouraged.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:03 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't think i've ever seen a cox film!

but as public figures, i get them confused.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm trying to think if I've ever seen a Temple film. Was the Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle one?

Other than that, Cox, because Sid and Nancy and Repo Man are two of my favourite films ever. Haven't really kept up with what he's done recently, though.

Boris and the Johnsons (kate), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:11 (eighteen years ago) link

"Sid and Nancy" is quite good. Never seen any of his other films. I quite liked when he used to introduce films on BBC2, before they got that Northern Irish git in to do it and when it ws still possible to see good films on British television (best in the world you know). As for Julien Temple, the Sex Pistols documentary was quite good and so was "Earth Girls Are Easy".

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:15 (eighteen years ago) link

The Great Rock N Roll Swindle is much better than either Sid and Nancy or The Filth & The Fury. Russ Meyer was originally lined up for the Pistols film which eventually became Swindle. I'd have loved to have seen what that would have looked like.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:22 (eighteen years ago) link

there was also an english 70s horror dude lined up for the pistols film -- the story is in matthew sweet's 'shepperton babylon'.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm trying to think if I've ever seen a Temple film. Was the Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle one?

Yes.

I did kind of mean "that didn't involve the Sex Pistols" when I asked.

Absolute Beginners was quite adventurous, but got killed by overhype to say the least.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, I've seen Absolute Beginners - that was tripe.

Boris and the Johnsons (kate), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Cox is great! Straight to Hell = best unbelievably bad film ever. Everything else he's done is supercool. Whereas Julian Temple is bollocks.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked "Straight to the front cover of a DVD magazine".

I did!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

j.temple is one of my major hate figures -- the filth and the fury is nearly bad enough to be a nick broomfield "documentary" -- but actually i like earth girls are easy

his sister nina used to be gen.sec of the CPGB!

repo man is always a pleasure but cox went sorta gaga and clueless when faced w.POPSTARS and their presence wrecks most of his later films -- i wd like to rewatch walker and the i never saw the mexican cop film

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Also Alex was much better when he was on BBC2 ruining the film for you before it started than that clueless Irish bloke who took over from him.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:49 (eighteen years ago) link

"What Scorcese's is tryin' ta say in this scene is..."

... repeat ad nauseum in N. Irish accent

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:51 (eighteen years ago) link

You also got the feeling that Alex liked more movies than were in The Lads' Mag Guide to Films with Swearing and Gangsters.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't Cox quit because the BBC told him that in future they wouldn't show subtitled films on BBC2 anymore? And I don't think they do.

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

(British television - best in the world etc)

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

This is why I got Sky. Fuck a BBC, the dumbing down BASTODS.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:06 (eighteen years ago) link

So when was the last time a Syberberg movie was shown on Sky then?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago) link

you can't have Syberberg w/o Skyberberg

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Not that I'm especially interested in seeing a Syberberg movie but I'd least I'd like the opportunity to turn my nose up at it once in a while

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Sky got a whole Arts channel, dude. Plus 2 movie channels showing foreign/classic/arthouse stuff. Plus TCM and the Horror Channel.

(NB I am not a shill.)

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Cox by a mile. He occasionally pops up with bits of journalism in the Guardian and more obscure places - very sharp politically. His website is worth checking out.

search: Highway Patrolman

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:46 (eighteen years ago) link

is highway patrolman "like" repo man in any way, morbius? i want to see it anyway but i've always been kind of intrigued that cox didn't seem to be able to get what worked in RM to work again

(the best thing abt sid and nancy = the entire future cast of eastenders w. mohawks and/or green hair)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Quadrophenia = the entire future cast of The Bill in Parkas.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah! But:

The entire cast of Eastenders = the entire future cast of The Bill

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone seen cox's borges film?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Feck I forgot all about that. What did he film?

xpost

I think they have an exchange scheme. That ginger alcoholic who was nobbing Joss Ackland is on Beastenders now.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Hang on, that's the wrong song isn't it?

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Back to Alex Cox. I imdb'd him. He did "Death and the Compass"! I rilly rilly need to see this.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Is that about that schoolgirl who got attacked by one of her classmates?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Or was that "Death and the Protractor"?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago) link

My favourite Bill line ever (from back in the day when it was half an hour and good): "We need somebody to go deep undercover. And I don't mean June Ackland blacked up."

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:17 (eighteen years ago) link

one year passes...

"Death & The Compass" is so awesome.

is highway patrolman "like" repo man in any way, morbius?

I just saw it for the first time in 18 years... It is not, save for one surreal moment in a psychiatric session. Still holds up nicely, probably the best thing he's done that I've seen.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

i shall track it down: i remember the village voice liked it at the time, and always wanted to see it

mark s, Thursday, 17 November 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

Also Alex was much better when he was on BBC2 ruining the film for you before it started than that clueless Irish bloke who took over from him.

Someone should commission Alex Cox's 'A Story of Film'.

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Thursday, 17 November 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

also Cox's UCLA thesis film is on the HP DVD; it's not bad even though he plays the lead.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 November 2011 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

still haven't seen Death and the Compass, keep vaguely mixing up the memory of it existing with The Spider's Stratagem and then forgetting it exists

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 November 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

two years pass...

Love a bunch of Cox's movies. I own Repo Man, Straight to Hell, Walker and Revengers Tragedy on DVD. Revengers Tragedy is really fucked up.
