anyone going to this? May 25th! I haven't seen it yet and I'm a big of his other stuff. It looks fucking awesome.

King Kitty, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 04:35 (sixteen years ago) link

After seeing Paranoia Agent I want to see this so much. Alas, it isn't showing in mtl yet... maybe at FanTasia?

Will M., Friday, 25 May 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Paranoia Agent was insane. I'd stay up all night just to watch it the second time around on A.S. That episode with the three suicide buddies really stuck with with me. That and the last episode, which was ƒu<kin NU†S!

django, Friday, 25 May 2007 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Paprika kinda feels like Paranoia Agent redux. The same themes are explored but not as much as they were in PA for obvious lack of time. The overall concept was handled in a better manner in PA but the visuals in Paprika are absolutely amazing. 6 months on, i can still remember some scenes quite vividly. The parade is stunning, the music just gets into your head and i couldn't help but want for more of the parade (you'll see what i mean).

the nyt review is so cute. 'animation not for kids?? OMG GROUNDBREAKING'

, Saturday, 26 May 2007 12:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm glad to see he's still using Susumu Hirasawa. The ending theme song for PA is brill!

django, Saturday, 26 May 2007 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I will absolutely go and see this in an ILX group. Or with girlfriend if need be. Kon's last three films were awesome; I wasn't aware he did a serialized anime! Off to netflix

i didnt get this film at all! v enjoyable though!

It was ok

admrl, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 01:10 (sixteen years ago) link

it was fun but kind of empty although i don't know if the translation was any good

elan, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 01:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, it was fine but easily his weakest film.
Thanks to this thread for turning me on to paranoia agent, tho! I ripped through all four discs of that mighty fast and was much impressed.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 02:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Isn't it awesome?! It may be my fave anime ever.

This will be in mtl on August 20th... so, err, expect another thread resurrect then

Will M., Tuesday, 17 July 2007 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah Paranoia Agent is fuckin brilliant! Paprika...not so much. The Japanese version was a little more quirky and goofy, but it was kinda dry for some reason. The end was pretty mind warping what with the dream eating baby and all, but P.A. totally fucked with your head and stuck with you. I forgot almost everything from Paprika by the time I got home :(. Still, the man can draw!

django, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the problem was craziness overkill. In Paranoia Agent most of the out-there moments were subdued but totally unnerving, in contrast to the stark, muted palette and ominous tone that it mostly followed. Paprika was, really, just too much.

That's so sad. Millennium Actress is one of my favorite movies, not just in the animated category.

only 46 (or 47?). Either way, much too young. Perfect Blue is a big personal favorite of mine.

s1ocki, that's a great interview, especially what he says about the role of mystery. such a brilliant guy.

What is really great about Paranoia Agent is that the English voice acting is actually really wonderful, as apposed to a lot of other Animes.

Evan, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Awful news- everything I've seen from Kon was wonderful; he was second only to Miyazaki. And at only 47...not like it needs to be restated, but fuck cancer.

This just kills me; I don't like anime in general, but came to Satashi Kon through the soundtracks that Hirasawa has done - the guy is incredible. I'm sad that I only discovered these movies just now. I wonder if "Dreaming Machine" will ever see release some day. FWIW Hirasawa also has a song called "Dreaming Machine" that he recently re-recorded; apparently he was supposed to compose the music for this one as well.

frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

The last I heard (late last year), Dreaming Machine was still in production and on track for a 2011 release. Kon apparently left reams of notes and made an agreement with the producers that it would be completed no matter what happened to him. I think the head animation director is in charge of it now?

People have been pointing this out for a while now. I don't think BS is a "rip off" of PB and the two movies are distinct from each other, but some scenes and imagery are definitely an inspiration (more than is actually shown in that tumblr post), but Aronofsky continues to deny it.

Really excited to learn that Funimation will be releasing a new edition of Satoshi Kon's unforgettable TV animation PARANOIA AGENT on blu-ray this December. It's harrowing, thrilling, fascinating and absolutely deserves a wider audience. pic.twitter.com/Hcjf50uWmj

So "Tokyo Godfathers" is the greatest Christmas film ever, right? I had the dvd sat here waiting for the family visiting in a few days but got out of bed in the middle of the night tonight to smoke some cigarettes in a severe mood, saw it there yeah let's stick this on aw shit I was bucketing tears within minutes

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 05:31 (three years ago) link

Also end credits is Inno Alla Gioia in Japanese? Dunno what that is in English but that's Christmas to me

An insane thread

For years I heard it repeated that Darren Aronofsky had bought the live action rights to Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue. That's why he was able to plunder shots from it for his most famous films. Today I learned that never happened and he's always just said it was "homage." WTF!?? https://t.co/WDwLzS7Nf7
