Ste, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link

::shudder:: I freakin' hate moths.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Some of those hawkmoths are beautiful, beautiful things...

Best looking insects outside of Talk Talk record covers.

NickB, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

that one's like some sort of futuristic fighter jet, from a Sega game.

Ste, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link

the fighter jet one's an elephant hawkmoth. their caterpillars eat rosebay willowherb leaves.

Garden Tiger - that's the one with the big fat hairy 'wooly bear' caterpillars.

when I was a student in Bristol we used to get Death's Head Hawkmoths flying into my hall of residence a lot:

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Freaky bastards those ones.

NickB, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I feel sorry for moths coz of the whole moon navigation humans invent electric lights fuckup thing.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't quite understand the moon navigation thing. Are they actually trying to fly to the moon? Don't they know nuffink?

NickB, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:51 (sixteen years ago) link

think parallax, Nick.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:52 (sixteen years ago) link

moths are awesome, but like butterflies, if they fly near me I totally lose my shit

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Just been reading up on parallax in Wikipedia. If moths can understand that shit, I truly doff my cap.

The emperor moth is a good one, it has a scary koala face on it that frightens off birds:

http://www.daviv.com/images/female_emperor_moth_02_s.jpg

Just to make sure to freak predators out, it's got a second pair of eyes on the underwing:

Big moth strikes again.

emil.y, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not a moth, but this fellow lives around my building in the hundreds:

It's the wonderfully-named Cockchafer.

Mark C, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Love all the flutterbies.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Not sure why I'm not more freaked out by moths; I despise all kinds of insects. Maybe I feel sorry for them, they're so slow-moving.

calstars, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:02 (sixteen years ago) link

for me it's because moths are beautiful, and they don't play the crawl-really-fast-all-over-the-floor-and-freak-the-shit-out-of-me game.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:04 (sixteen years ago) link

five years pass...

Saw an amazing moth on the window the other day. Larger than most. (Sort of) Red admiralish colours on its underside. Went outside to have a look and the top was all pale browns, barely noticeable.

djh, Sunday, 2 September 2012 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

ten months pass...

Recommend any books about moths? (For identifying UK moths and/or a good read).

djh, Saturday, 6 July 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link

How do I post photos on here? (That are on my computer). Thanks.

djh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 19:14 (ten years ago) link

you need to upload them to a hosting site

i use Photobucket a lot, it's free and seems pretty easy. other people will probably have their own recommendations.

second one looks like a cabbage moth?

the SI unit of ignorance (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

i recently stumbled across this site that chronicles one person's adventures into home sericulture, also has a bunch of information about what common silkworms look like once they turn into moths and other varieties of moths that produce silk filament - like luna moths. it's WORMSPIT.COM so how could you not be intrigued

Step one in my plan to become a moth geek ... Armed with my New Holland Concise Butterfly and Moth Guide.

Haven't been able to identify either.

djh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 20:09 (ten years ago) link

i've just flicked thru my Collins Gem - here's a pic of a cabbage moth

Nice one. There is a lot of cabbage in the garden ...

djh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

other one maybe a red necked footman?

the SI unit of ignorance (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

Cheers. That hint then a google image search suggests it is a Common Footman.

djh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

cool, i thought i was off

the SI unit of ignorance (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

second one looks very much like a silver y-wing without the eponymous mark (perhaps folded away)

imago, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 21:42 (ten years ago) link

but yeah, cabbage moth probably closely related

imago, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 21:43 (ten years ago) link

What would make you think it *isn't* a cabbage moth? (Genuine, non-snarky question - not really sure what I'm looking for).

djh, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 22:02 (ten years ago) link

oh i'm willing to believe it is. moth taxonomy not my forte

imago, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 22:03 (ten years ago) link

is that the same type of moth in the first three photos? a couple that resemble that first photo but not the other two have been hanging around in my house for a few days now, weirdly lumpy looking when viewed side on. we're not too bothered about getting rid of them but i suppose if they breed things could get a bit horrifying.

SKYLER FFS SKYLER SKYLER SKYLER (Merdeyeux), Friday, 16 August 2013 15:59 (ten years ago) link

the last is a hummingbird hawkmoth. the first 3 photos contain a privet hawkmoth, or Sphinx, which has a sepulchral aspect and a shrouded, hunched form at rest, although its hindwings are brightly striped orange-pink and black and will be visible in flight as such. the body is striped more finely in similar colours. you need not be alarmed, unless you fear portents

imago, Friday, 16 August 2013 16:03 (ten years ago) link

these moths are the simple pish of mothkind though - like identifying a flamingo or a kingfisher. not even sport - dilettantish indulgence perhaps

imago, Friday, 16 August 2013 16:05 (ten years ago) link

Am not very skilled at identification ...

djh, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

Mother of Pearl for the last of these, maybe?

djh, Monday, 19 August 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

The first of those three is a Silver Y, apparently.

imago, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 08:46 (nine years ago) link

whatever it is, it's a really tatty specimen. looks likes it's been pecked by a bird or something
