Driving someone from ILX - classic or dud

If your behaviour was to drive someone from ILX, would this make you feel mighty and powerful, or would it make you hate what you have become?

So far only Dr. C has said he misses having Kate around. I'll also take credit for Marcello. Plus I banned some people. Mighty and powerful isn't quite the word, more a swell of civic pride. Like Jim Broadbent in Hot Fuzz.

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Surely Matt DC has the best claim to Marcello? You can have the assist, if you like.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd like to claim on Carmody and Dog Latin, anyway.

That'd be two dirty vicar threads in as many weeks. Has he really earned it?

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Marcello was my doing, but mostly because he thought me accidentally banning him was Stevem deliberately banning him.

I am leaving ILX.

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

In all honesty, I know I overreacted to everything last night. But between the feeling that I'm part of the "nu-ILM" that some people want exiled and the fact that I can't post anything about rap (or anything period) without trife stumbling in trying to start some shit, I'm getting that "hitting my head against the wall" feeling. That, and I figure I've contributed little of substance but one-liners, probably because it's the only stuff I feel safe posting without getting shit thrown at me. (I don't know how nickalicious can take it, personally. Well, OK, maybe I do -- he's not fucking neurotic.) And yeah, I know trife was trying to be "friendly" in my birthday thread, but then he just turned that into another "let's shit on Def Jux" thing. And "punk is for racists"? See, I can't even tell if he's joking anymore. I've seen him post about Balzac without making the obvious scrotal reference, so I know he's not a moron, but the only thing he seems to be trying to do most places is get himself over. Seems like 90% of the time, when he's not starting his own threads, his contributions are limited to jumping into other peoples' threads and bitching about how awful everybody's tastes are, as if he thinks he's rescuing hip-hop for the REAL ILM heads or something:

Exhibit A
Exhibit B (where he gets served by Chuck Eddy)
Exhibit C
Exhibit D

And really man, I could get on some Pee-Wee's Big Adventure shit with an Exhibit Q (a model of the ENTIRE SHOPPING CENTER!), but I won't. Maybe I can't take a joke, but I just don't feel like that sort of shit is really laden with humor potential in the first place.

At the risk of quoting KRS-One and thus making myself out to look corny, my problem (if you're curious) is that I take this hip-hop shit too serious. Every time someone posts about rap it's "trife to thread" this and "i need some advice from trife" and "wwtd?" which makes him out to be the ILM rap grand poobah of huge swinging dickdom, and when the ILM Rap Authority's main arguments are things like "Outkast fans are patronizing closet racists", that makes me feel like my opinion on ILM re: hip-hop isn't welcome. I've been having a hard time in the last few days, and usually music is the thing that cheers me up, but when I feel like I can't be "right" about music then I just get pissed off. And then I make a retard of myself on a public messageboard. Hooray!

I am feeling somewhat better, at least. Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "What the Hell is This" can have that effect.

If I've ever driven anyone off of ILX, I don't know about it. I know people have attempted to drive me off, or at least have taken potshots at me because I've either agreed with someone they dislike or have expressed myself in an imperious manner that wasn't meant to be taken as seriously as the offended party took it. Also, I've upset people because my sense of humor finds unintentional and/or ironic cruelty funny. I don't think anyone's left because of me, though. (I suspect I helped one person decide to leave, mostly because said person was emailing other people about how awful I was. That situation was odd because this was a person I never said anything negative about and regularly defended against a lot of unnecessary criticism.)

#1 reason for people being driven off ILX: generalisations! I can roll with the zings, the stick, the abuse, but I can't roll with the judgements and character assassinations. There's a difference between being thin-skinned, and not letting people walk all over you.

just wanted to add this excerpt from a paper i'm working on with some coworkers

"Cyber Bullying: Cyber bullying can take place in email, over instant messenger, in chat rooms, at gaming sites, through cell phones, and at social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Cyber bullying can involve Flaming (“A brief, heated exchange...that occurs via any kind of communication technology”), Cyber Harassment (“A unique form of cyber bullying that involves repetitive offensive messages sent to a target”) and Cyber Denigration (“Information about another that is derogatory and untrue”, including altering photos and dispersing them as real)."

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:39 (seventeen years ago) link

In order to address cyber bullying the teacher must recognize that, by its nature, cyber bullying occurs when there is no supervising adult present. Therefor any action plan must hold, at its center, training and empowerment for youth. Part of the prevention can be explicit teaching of students about how to use the internet in an appropriate way.

Dom, you're one of those guys who whines that people are better/fitter/more networked/richer than you as if there is a vast metropolitan conspiracy against your sorry, provincial, undervalued arse. Your solution: the only way to become memorable is to be hateful. Public response: MEH. When they find you as a pensioner, freeze-dried to a chair three months after your lonely death, wearing a bathrobe and dried remnants of excreta, and with more unpublish/ed/able work than Colin Wilson to burn off, nobody who was here will be very surprised AT ALL.

If you really need to insult me, feel free to take well-informed pot shots at my career, friends, looks, physique, sexual partners over the years, or social class. It will be as enlightening or original as anything else you 'contribute' here.

suzy, Saturday, 10 November 2007 10:59 (seventeen years ago) link

For the purposes of fairness, and not to be all Cap'n Save-A-Dom about this, but I don't think Dom takes pot-shots at anything other than perceived inanities or hypocrisies in ILX posts. He has a genuine zeal of dislike towards certain social strata (yours, that of the wealthier woman, he actually finds "hot", funnily enough), and his judgement is frequently harsh, but if he's read as a barracker rather than a genuine misanthrope I think it scans far more logically. Sure he crosses the 'line' sometimes (read: often), but I really don't think his criticism is born out of envious loathing for "better" people. Plus, I don't think reams of unpublished work are his style. He strikes me as one who'll only write when there's a) money at stake (Powerslam) and b) when people are listening (ILX).

I fully understand those who find him a complete and utter cunt, though. I used to feel the same, before I stopped taking it so seriously.
