Shall we anticpate the AMC series "Breaking Bad"? I think I may.

ha, I'm only 4 eps in! It goes straight into the first two guys (Crazy 8). Also I'd remembered Walt as quite loving at the start but I don't know where that came from, he's been kind of a passive-aggressive jerk from day 1. Only time he's opened up so far has been to Crazy 8 in the basement.

oops, I suppose not everyone's on the kind of errrrr variable schedule that I am where I can decide to watch six episodes a day. Walt's always been pretty terrible it's true. Actually maybe the most genuinely caring thing he ever did was the RUN murders...

RUN murders?

educate yourself to this reality (sunny successor), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

sry, when Walt runs over and shoots the kid-killers Jesse's about to face off with. Then tells Jesse to RUN.

Jesse def the person he's been most considerate of over the course of the series.

Y'know, apart from allowing his girlfriend to die and poisoning his stepson.

Writing those two sentences just made me realise anew how batshit and amazing this show is.

RUN

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 17:09 (ten years ago) link

I suppose not everyone's on the kind of errrrr variable schedule that I am where I can decide to watch six episodes a day.

i am! i'm doing a rescreen right now & watching it like this really illuminates how much the paranoia walt feels following the sudden series of murders at the end of season 3/beginning of season 4 really lets his assholism blossom. like letting jane die, definitely an asshole, but in this new context it becomes truly delusional, much more grandiose.

discreet, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 18:03 (ten years ago) link

apart from allowing his girlfriend to die

Which girlfriend was that?

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

jane, season 2.

Clay, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 19:05 (ten years ago) link

I really, really hope there's some fallout there's some fallout from Jane's death in the final episodes. Like, Walt's done so much terrible shit since but that really felt like the tipping point from frightened self-preservation to calculated evil. Also, kind of a massive secret for him still to be keeping from Jesse.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 20:42 (ten years ago) link

Doesn't look like that's gonna happen though - it's totally unprovable without Walter having some kind of breakdown like he almost did in the Fly episode. Plus they seem to keep making a point of Walt foolishly keeping the ricin cigarette, looks like that's more likely to be the real event. But honestly I'd be fine with both deceptions never being uncovered by Jesse, it would fit in this world.

Nhex, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 21:02 (ten years ago) link

I wouldn't rule out Walt having another breakdown like that for one second.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 21:05 (ten years ago) link

i think we've already passed the point that admission would shock jesse. for all its hideousness it was iirc the most passive role walt's played in another person's death, aside from the obv bulk meth manufacturing.

walt compelling jesse to murder gale and then jesse being drawn further into gus's trusted circle, and having to negotiate these two poles of moral degeneracy, is the real, lasting break in their relationship. i think it overshadows everything that came before and sets the tone for what's happened since.

discreet, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link

i am absolutely loving rewatching this, it is so rich in sympathy and detail, and some of the big scenes that seemed overwrought when i first caught it are just killing me now. like jesse in the 12 step group in season 4, setting up his own kangaroo court when he talks about killing a "dog," and demands to be judged for it (in this environment specifically organized to suppress judgment), because everyone in his world who holds sway over his life, walt or gus or mike, won't do it; would only encourage it.

discreet, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 21:37 (ten years ago) link

and Jesse gets so cute so quickly

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 21:45 (ten years ago) link

I don't know how the logistics of this would work but I'd be really into a spinoff called "RUN" where different people get into jams and Walt just appears in the last 5 seconds to run over people and solve the problem

yesss. could just apply it to different tv shows.

i've been using headphones throughout my rewatch, and i'm noticing even more how the sound design is consistently amazing. the quiet drips of blood onto the floor while gus is letting victor bleed to death: D:

Clay, sorry are you saying Jesse let Jane die? I remember Jesse being in a heroin induced sleep too and Walt letting her choke.

Jesse def the person he's been most considerate of over the course of the series.

seems like the pretty clear line here is "walt was nice to jesse, haha except when he did terrible things including letting jesse's gf die." -- "which gf?" -- "jane. walt let jane die."

Clay, Thursday, 4 July 2013 07:15 (ten years ago) link

Ah, read the original line wrong, sorry!

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 July 2013 07:34 (ten years ago) link

I wonder how todd is going to play into the final 8.

educate yourself to this reality (sunny successor), Friday, 5 July 2013 14:38 (ten years ago) link

It'd be funny if there was a scene where he tells Jesse "don't you see he's making all this up as he goes along?" Not actually funny, just "I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the big finish and will say any random shit" funny.

WilliamC, Friday, 5 July 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

Will there be 8 new episodes now and more in 2014? Or are they just finishing it all off with these 8?

only 8 more altogether

update on my ongoing rewatch: every episode of season 4 ends with me thinking SHIT WALT IS SO FUCKED NOW.
