I clicked on Alba's link and had to shut my computer to get rid of it.
It's good to turn off one's computer, sometimes, if one isn't using it very urgently. Maybe Alba is proud of himself on that account. But I can't say that being made to do so in this way was very welcome. In case I find myself on a similar link in future, can anyone advise re. how to get rid of it without turning off the computer?
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link
pinefox, you just hit 'back' on your browser & the click "ok" really fast about 20 times & it will let you out.
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link
Sorry, the pinefox. I forgot about you. You could have either have clicked OK to all the lyric boxes (there are about 20 or 30) or else quit the program (might have had to do that on Windows by doing CTRL-ALT-DELETE and selecting your browser).
― Alba, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

possibly the word you want is 'immovable'. or maybe 'unmoveable' is OK too.
... No: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/unmoveable
anyway: well, naturally I tried to go 'back'. But the program or www page wouldn't let me. And naturally I clicked on that OK box many times, probably more than 20-30 - it didn't make any difference, the song just went round and started again.
I tried to 'quit the program' by shutting the whole www connection down. It would not let me. It wouldn't let me do anything much. I'm not very encouraged re. what will happen if I encounter this again; though I still wouldn't have encountered it at all without Alba's hilarious intervention.

Pinefox, if this happens again, you have to press Control + Alt + Delete at the same time. You then get box whith several options. Out of these options, choose "Task management". You then get a list of "tasks", i.e. programs and processes that your computer is running at the moment. On that list you see your Internet browser. Choose that and then click "End task". Your browser will then close and you get rid of all those irritating windows. Sometimes, after clicking "End task", you get a message that says the program is not responding. In that case, in the message there's a button that says "End now". Click on that, and the browser will shut down.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link
You can those also do this when your web browser gets "jammed", i.e. when some web page causes it to overload and you can't close it down normally.

In fact, you can do this if any program on your computer gets "jammed". Just choose it on the task list, click "End task", and when the computer asks if you really want to quit the program, click "End now". That way you don't have shut down the whole computer.

In Finnish we call duct tape "Jesus tape". The origin of the term is kinda shady, but apparently it's something to do with always saving people.
