lol, loved that

read through the e-book, was hoping it'd be funnier. i like the whole "lol nihilism" thing because visions of the apocalypse + funny music is like ice cream on a hot fudge brownie to me, but it seems like he's playing it pretty straight here. like he hasn't taken the step after "nothing matters", because that's the best part of it.

CoolRadio, Monday, 26 January 2015 02:31 (nine years ago) link

ya i lol'd at that pic

The new posts are interesting as a summation of Carles' enterprise.

I remember when I first found hipster runoff when I was 19 and thought it was the funniest thing I had ever read. Just his commitment to the persona, and the fact that it was balanced just on the edge of plausibility, was striking, but the novelty wore off. The commenters always sort of disturbed me. Little clones who may or may not get the irony.

i loled at this comment though

carles has coined the term "auth" to replace "alt". big things are happening

Treeship, Thursday, 29 January 2015 01:32 (nine years ago) link

He seems to have forgotten how to be funny. Or insightful. Which leaves...what? Bands?

everything, Thursday, 29 January 2015 01:37 (nine years ago) link

i always think of carles as a fictional construct who is related but not identical to his creator. this is just where the character is now that the author has picked up the script... i think there is a pathos to the recent posts that is compelling due to my investment in the character and also he is still funny sometimes

Treeship, Thursday, 29 January 2015 01:45 (nine years ago) link

it's still funny imo

Who r all thse ppl [via social media]?
Do they realize they are just participating in an oppressive scalable medium?
Dumping their thoughts in2 a ‘monetized conversation’
where they will nvr be paid
despite getting 2 brand themselves as #shareholders & #evangelists?

Treeship, Friday, 13 February 2015 13:35 (nine years ago) link

I’m not sure if coolness is having courage 2 do what is right, or if auth is just ‘going off the deep end’ and ‘doing whatever u want’ [via Nothing Matters].

This conversation was edited for clarity—namely, instances of “u,” “ppl” and “2” were changed to be spelled out. But you can imagine.

fun fact! hipster runoff wrote weird jokingly predatory comments on my blog when i was 12, 13. always baffled when friends defend him to me

The Carles stuff is good Ezra just sounds like he's trying hard to sound smart/like Carles.

CARLES: Do you feel like failed indie blogs (like my own) created a fake/misguided tier of celebrity and global cultural relevance?

lol what is this? is he basically just wondering aloud if he is as important/relevant as he thinks he is?

jill's got heroin (rip van wanko), Friday, 9 October 2015 14:50 (eight years ago) link

EZRA: I don’t know if I’m a taste curator yet. I feel more like a flavor. I wish I was a taste curator because then I could just trend-spot flavors. I’m like a lonely hazelnut frappuccino in a Starbucks in a Target. The real power is being Target.

2 deep 4 me

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 9 October 2015 14:56 (eight years ago) link

Carles: Do you think this interview/deep meaningful podcast-style ‘free flowing’ interaction is dependent upon the #klout of your #reach?
EZRA: If I have any #reach, I shouldn’t waste it propagating the lie that indie existed. How does that help me and my brand?

Yeah scratching my head here what could indie possibly have to do with the lead singer of Vampire Weekend interviewing a tastemaker in The Fader.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 9 October 2015 15:00 (eight years ago) link

Carles may have talked a lot about authenticity and fakeness but I usually felt like he was genuine in his writing. Even when he was portraying characters. Ezra here just comes across as a cynical xerox of that style.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 9 October 2015 15:00 (eight years ago) link

CARLES: Where do you go when you want to be ‘authentically immersed in culture?’ Remember when people thought they could get #networked together on the internet as a cultural aggregator?

EZRA: I feel most ‘authentically immersed in culture’ when I am sitting at an independent, artisanal cafe reading a book by a left-wing journalist with my phone flipped-over on the table in front of me.

CARLES: If you were to open a post-artisan coffee shop, what would you do? What specialty drinks/roasting processes would you serve, and what customer experience would you ‘curate’?

EZRA: The post-artisan cafe vibe wave we’re seeing in L.A./N.Y.C./London is less old-timey shit and more Scandinavian/art gallery minimalism. My cafe would take this to its logical extreme: all-white, backless benches and one large brewed pot of coffee today (when it’s done, it’s done). I would play the Billboard Top 10 singles on loop all day.

"we chose genuine fakes over fake genuines" was otm too

flopson, Saturday, 10 October 2015 20:54 (eight years ago) link

Idk about the scando thing. There is a twin peaks-esque woodsy americana kitsch vibe to a lot of brunch spots in bushwick. Seems like a throwback to bush era "ironic appreciation" of mass culture but these places are new. Maybe its a vanguard that points to a coming resurgence of this aesthetic in the age of Trump.

Treeship, Saturday, 10 October 2015 21:10 (eight years ago) link

Ppl like to get into distrusting metanarratives when their politics is openly an incoherent clown show. Disillusionment with Obama, as much as hope in Obama, was a coherent metanarrative, hence the 2k8-2k10 "bubble" when people had a hunger for authenticity. If politics isn't stupid, maybe culture isn't either, the logic goes. Maybe. All of this is very facile.

Treeship, Saturday, 10 October 2015 21:17 (eight years ago) link

There was something about Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring, and Twitter that might have felt different to many people though -- a suspension of the corporate stranglehold on culture, a sense of the coming irrelevancy of all things mainstream

Between the poptimism recap and the Carles interview, it seems like Fader is trying to reach that coveted "the 300 people that regularly read ILX" demographic

front lines of what? place looks just like the restaurant avec in chicago, which opened in 2003, and not that different from the original stumptown in portland, opened the same year. non-scando (and what exactly is new about that?), but the even more minimalist la colombe in noho is about 4 years old too.

four years pass...

i looked this up on the wayback machine recently.

some of it was still funny and prescient.

but the main thing that jumped out was that it was often shockingly sexist. "ironically" i guess but still.
