Ppl like to get into distrusting metanarratives when their politics is openly an incoherent clown show. Disillusionment with Obama, as much as hope in Obama, was a coherent metanarrative, hence the 2k8-2k10 "bubble" when people had a hunger for authenticity. If politics isn't stupid, maybe culture isn't either, the logic goes. Maybe. All of this is very facile.

There was something about Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring, and Twitter that might have felt different to many people though -- a suspension of the corporate stranglehold on culture, a sense of the coming irrelevancy of all things mainstream

Between the poptimism recap and the Carles interview, it seems like Fader is trying to reach that coveted "the 300 people that regularly read ILX" demographic

front lines of what? place looks just like the restaurant avec in chicago, which opened in 2003, and not that different from the original stumptown in portland, opened the same year. non-scando (and what exactly is new about that?), but the even more minimalist la colombe in noho is about 4 years old too.

i looked this up on the wayback machine recently.
some of it was still funny and prescient.
but the main thing that jumped out was that it was often shockingly sexist. "ironically" i guess but still.

It’s funny reading about idosing and people being mindblown with those binaural “cutting hair” youtube vids.

HR came to prominence in this weird moment where the group of friends I'd go to hipster runoff-esque bands and bars kind of dispersedtransition from the blog house scene to edm/etcphoto blogs of parties in nyc/la/etc kind of disappeared as people got iphones/etc
part of it was me getting old (late 20s lol) but it seemed like a shift?
lots of good stuff in this thread, real time capsule

Hipster runoff warned us about her more than a decade ago.
Been reading the posts about her and yeah in retrospective she has always been unpalatable. I guess I tolerated it better when her music didn’t suck.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 March 2022 18:35 (two years ago) link
It's amazing she's been able to last this long despite being The Fucking Worst since day one. I mean, you would think "high school art girl version of Matthew Barney" would have a naturally short shelf life, but it's been a decade and a half or something at this point.

My timeline with Grimes is basically: "oh, ppl say she makes gothy pixie music, that's 100% my bag" *listens to Visions* "holy hell this is unmitigated bullshit, wtf"*hears Purity Ring*"oh this is what I thought Grimes was going to sound like; here Grimes, you can have all of my middle fingers"

WHY ORANGETHEORY HIRED STEVE AOKI AS ITS CMO—CHIEF MUSIC OFFICER
Yeah, I feel like when he took breaks from doing some of the grosser hounding of musicians his voice could work really well for a specific sort of at-large cultural criticism.
e.g. Urban Outfitters stock is in 'the shitter', CEO resigns. Are alt retailers dying?

There was a really good one or maybe series of ones referencing edison lightbulb, mason jars, exposed brick sort of aesthetic trend in coffeehouses, "gastropubs" that was really satisfying. He was good at that stuff I think.
